Vincent D'Onofrio (Law & Order, Full Metal Jacket) joins us this week and opens up on his process of letting go on set, fully embracing the idea of failure in service of a better artistic performance. Vincent is candid about his decade long experience on Law & Order - from the burnout he suffered on set, to the disdain certain crew had for his choices in the role, to the gratitude he had for the actor it helped him become. We also talk about the intensity on set shooting Kubrick’s Full Metal Jacket, growing up introverted, and having to teach actors certain lessons.

I may be in the minority here, but Law & Order Criminal Intent was my favorite of all of the L & O series. Vincent D'Onofrio was so mesmerizing in his role. And the combination of him with Kathryn Erbe was awesome! I wish there could be a reboot!

One thing about the other Law & Order shows is that they did not have to rely on one specific character to make the show entertaining, whereas with Criminal Intent Vincent D'Onofrio was *literally* the bread and butter of the show. His character and performance are just so mesmerizing and unique.

The work schedule, or should i say, the overwork schedule about which he speaks is exactly what caused Angela Lansbury to step back from Murder She Wrote by the 5/6 seasons. She started to just introduce episodes. She physically had to lighten the daily work schedule because of the toll it was taking on her. And yes the seasons ran with between 22 to 2 4:03 4 episodes. Great shows with great actors were never made by slackers. Kudos to them all for extraordinary television. Its is no surprise these shows are still airing today. Quality counted!!

What shows only have 8 episodes per season? (It's ridiculous that I even have to say this but), I am genuinely asking, not being a smartass...I swear reading comments is the hardest thing to do sometimes because people read things in the emotions THEY ARE FEELING IN THAT MOMENT. I can make a comment being 10000% sarcastic and 99% of the world sees the sarcastic but there's always that 1% that jumps in all pissy "how can you even say...." or "wow, if that's how you feel or what you think...." Ok, I get it. Someone pissed in your cheerios this morning. Doesn't mean you need to run to social media and take it out on the world. (How many people are going to reply to my comment JUST because of the aforementioned statement???) I don't have "tv", I have Amazon and Netflix and stream some others on occasion if there's something I really want to watch. Most of the things I watch like L&O CI and SVU and the one Chicago series generally have 22 episodes. I was suckered in the "Alert" which only had 9 episodes but I can't think of any others. I know some shows split the season in half and have fall and spring premiers. My problem is they basically all run from Sept-May...umm WTF am I supposed to watch all summer??? As to this interview....I will rematch the entire series specifically for one actor and D'Onofrio is one of them. He is so genuine that he is able to make someone forget he's "acting". He definitely deserves more credit than he has gotten.

I even remember the scene ... he and the Kathryn Erbe (a flaming leftist liberal in real life) were on the rooftop standing at a shooter perch, and she said some line to the tune of "I can just see him in his Vote Bush t-shirt" ... and it was all downhill from there. I would almost bet that Erbe convinced the show-runner to let her use that line (not in original script).

I can't believe it took 16-hour days to make that piece of garbage show. It was definitely the worst Law & Order, and Goren was one of the worst TV characters of all time. D'Onofrio's personality and ridiculous mannerisms made the show unwatchable to me. I have liked him in other roles, but the choices he made were so annoying. It was like he was doing a bad Jeff Goldblum impression. Then, they actually brought in Jeff Goldblum, and that didn't work either. I remember in one episode, Goren was cornered in a prison and 4 crooked guards were going to kill him and his partner. But he was able to talk to each of them and one by one, they dropped their weapons and walked away. That was one of a million absurd moments on the show that caused me to stop watching. To this day when I hear the theme I cringe. And Katherine Erbe had all the personality of a piece of driftwood. Maybe she was toning it down to compensate for the insane overacting that D'Onofrio was doing. I like the episodes with Chris Noth and all the female partners he had were better than Erbe.
