You cant build house without NHRBC forget CIDB. This guy is talking rubbish. Every site should have a saftey officer and safety file, those alone will tell you a story & if they not complaint the owners must go to jail. Also check if thier compensation papers are in order. All this are very important we cant treat this with kid gloves.

The NHBRC is a warranty scheme to assure the investment of the owners are protected if the building contractor performance is poor & buildings need to be aborted. The CIDB is a regulatory body that determines the type of work contractors can undertake depending on their prior contracting experience, meeting functionality requirements & capacity in terms of competent staff and site management. Currently only those contractors that do work for government are compelled to have registration with the CIDB and are only allowed to undertake work in accordance with the grading and category of their registration. For instance a start up firm on the building construction discipline would be only to register as GB2 and are limited to projects with value of less than R1,000,000. In private sector however, a typical contractor (usually white-owned) can only get a NHBRC certificate after completion of a 2-hour open book test, and then be granted a R10,000,000 contract by his corporate associates, friends, family or other connected individuals. There is no oversight on competence, expertise, or statutory compliance the CIDB requires.

The investigation will likely uncover loads of critical mistakes and a culture of taking shortcuts. Imagine using "cleaners" to mix cement, as claimed by some newspapers...

I can recall personally a flat built which was not compliance with any of the regulators, corners were cut as the flat was built in a "location" area. I hope to see more stricter action in construction to take place as there are also many FAKE contractors mushrooming up #failedcompliance

“Cidb” thought the only purpose of this registration is for government works only. This does not make sense. Health and safety is definitely something that ALL contractors / builders, including private contractors/ developers, should be compliant with. Concern also over the low cost housings etc that now has double, triple storeys and many additional rooms added on top. A lot do not have plans and peoples lives are at risk in these properties as well. No inspections are done on these properties, no rates, no nhbrc. All lives matters, how are these going to be regulated in future? Are all builders going to have to register with cidb? Also, the Land to hold such volume buildings should be scrutinized by before being passing to build on!!! The concrete slabs ,structure, columns should be then progressively monitored, inspected for weight bearing as well to see if the builders have been compliant as per the plans. If everyone can build according to standards and safety regulations then we won’t have these sad, traumatic disastrous outcomes.

Why don't they investigate every building before being built n avoid disasters. They only investigate when there's an accident. Very stupid. What's the use of having cops n paying tax. We must still protect ourselves. Where do you see private security protects cops. Hey wena. What rubbish this.😂

The CIDB is the only regulatory body in the SA building environment that could determine if a contracting firm is competent to undertook work of a certain scope and complexity. The exclusion of private sector construction operations from CIDB oversight makes no sense at all. All the big firms (former big 5 & others) are registered with the CIDB since they're or have been doing work for government, its agencies, and SOE's. Currently in the private sector, anyone with an NHBRC certificate can undertake work far above their experience, competency, or capacity. And since it's private investors who' going to dictate to them. In the town of George, these developments are mushrooming to the detriment of established local building industry players. These speculating developers came from the North and, over the past decade, have high jacked the sector with the local municipality reporting approved plans of over a Billion Rands worth of new projects, year-on- year since 2017-2018.

That comment is totally out of sync with what is going on here; where we've seen authorities, rescuers, community all showing compassion and commitment and working together to rescue survivors, recover the deceased and gather evidence for investigating causes. Do some research before exposing your prejudices and stereotypes like this; key persons and owners of main entities involved are very definitely not 'bbbee'..
