Yes that’s why they are executed. To put an end to their heinous crimes. I believe our justice system needs work and the death penalty can’t be thrown around. Innocent people of course should not be executed and there needs to be a way to fix that. But I believe the death penalty is reserved for those who have committed horrible acts of terror and who have the complete disregard for human life. Ted Bundy escaped from prison twice and each time he escaped, he raped and murdered more women. That’s why the death penalty exists and that’s why he was executed. People who can’t play by the rules regarding human life must not be allowed to live amongst us

In my opinion, the only thing worse than death is torture. Most people deserving of the death penalty are already past the point of remorse, so making them think about their crimes won't do anything. Bottom line for me is, at least they get to live. Their victims don't.

Statistically, increasing the severity of the punishment up to the death penalty has VERY little effect on crime rates. People don't commit crimes with the expectation of getting caught. Pickpocketing used to have a sentence of hanging. And other pickpockets would go to the crowds of people watching someone get hanged for picking pockets, and pick their pockets. Lots of people were gathered in a small area, lots of bumping into each other and everyone was distracted. Easy opportunity to pick pockets. Didn't matter what the punishment was. If you want to reduce crime, you need to convince people that getting caught is LIKELY, not that is carries great sentences.

@@slayer2608 Saudia Arabia has crime. It's on the low side, but you can't assume that's because of harsh sentencing. Norway's Crime rate is significantly lower than Saudi Arabia's and capital punishment was abolished decades ago. Chechnya's crime rate may be lower than elsewhere in Russia but it's crime rate is growing faster than almost anywhere else in Russia. So, again, a better example is needed.

I looked at that a little different. Those 2 guys he hugged were the ones that said their mothers shouldnt be exempt of the death penalty. The Afro Dude came at them afterwards saying he was shocked and that was the problem with society. Then at the end, he hugged them both and said "How is your mother?". I personally think the guy was being passive aggressive and was essentially backhanding them in the guise of a hug.

Mhmm dont think so, i kinda get her, it'll be more ironic if she agreed for the mother to go through death penalty. If she did agreed, it'd means she also agrees to what the mother did (killing the husband) which she is clearly not. I think what she's saying is that there is a better solution to the problem by giving the mother a less level of sentence, like life sentence, just as the mother should've punished the husband anything rather than murdering him. Its hard to explain, but she's not justifying the murder of the wife.

@@Niiju Oh really? What kind of proof? If you're talking about eye witnesses, it's been proven that people can be mislead and coerced into give false witness testimony. DNA evidence? Cross contamination is a thing. Video? Deep fakes. The truth is you can never really be sure who killed a person unless they confess to it or if they are caught in the act. Nothing in the world is 100 percent reliable and innocent people have been executed before.

I loved this middle ground discussion. There was no power dynamics, everyone got the chance to speak about their views and even though, they might've not agreed with the other side, they respected their opinions. I watched this one after the rich vs poor and men's rights activists one, and what an absolute joy it was to watch these people argue in a civilised manner unlike the above mentioned videos

The thing I can never understand is this: we agree that taking someone’s life is wrong, and should be punished. But the punishment is literally to take that person’s life? That seems so hypocritical and counterproductive. It’s only okay to take a life if they took someone else’s first? I believe all life has inherent value, and yes, it’s terrible that people murder each other. They should be punished. But the way to punish murder is not to continue murdering people.

It is so interesting to talk about the concept of forgiveness. I have talked to someone who has experienced horrific traumatic things during WWII (Jewish). They have told me, that in order to live a happy, complete life, they at some point had to "get rid of the anger and forgive". It was not about the people commiting the crime, but about selflove and "moving on", retaking the power over your own life and not be a "slave" to someone elses choices. I have no idea how I would deal with such trauma, but it was so very inspiring.

I've dealing with the same thing. I had so much hate towards a person , but after a point I want to move on. The problem was that I was feeling, that by forgiven him, it was like a favor towards him. Until I uderstand that forgiveness is something you do for yourself in order to move on and not be stuck in the past and all the bad felling that came with the past. When I try to explain this to other people they don't get it at all, so I am happy there are out there people that uderstand this concept of forgiveness. (sorry for bad English)

Forgiving is very difficult and is not always something you're able to do but actively hating someone (or being afraid of someone that's still out there) is exhausting. So, if forgiveness means to stop actively making hating-them a part of your day, then yes.

I'll be honest. You do not have to forgive a person who has wronged you. You can forget what they did, become indifferent towards them but you definitely do not have to forgive them.

I think what I’m learning the most from middle ground is that Soooo many people are on the same side as one another but half of those people can’t think beyond the first step so it makes them believe that is as far as it goes…

I'm not, because that argument is essentially meaningless; the idea that citizens "give the state power" is nothing but a self-comforting illusion; the basic fact is that whatever organized body wields the military might to hold the final veto on policy making and to ultimately enforce its dictates is, by definition, 'The State'; if you don't have such a body, you have anarchy (not a state) and if you do have one, then that body has as much power (at least with respect to the treatment of its citizens) as its operatives choose to apply, regardless of how the populace feels about it; even if you could organize a popular revolt to overthrow the current state (which likely wouldn't even be possible as long as the military still follows orders), the armed revolutionary guard would simply become a successor state, and would be similarly unanswerable until a superior military came to supplant them.

This video was very wholesome. I love this series because it let's me hear the perspective of a person who I would normally never talk to

Instead of saying we need more people like the Afro guy, let’s say we should BE more like him.

Hey Jubilee, have you thought about bringing one or more people to the show, who aren't sure where they stand on a subject to see if the polarizing views help them make a decision? And then maybe interviewing them, afterwards? Just a thought.

I would be for the death penalty if there was a definite way to prove people on death row as guilty. A study came out that showed 4% of them were innocent, that’s overwhelming to me.

That study includes people that were convicted decades ago. Show me the study of people that were convicted recently. You know. Now that we have DNA evidence. That’s the only reason we even know about that 4%. Which means it’s nowhere near 4% today. Now, it takes a lot to be put to death. And we already have like 20 years worth of appeals before they die.

Only one problem with the study... how tf do you calculate that? Detectives are detectives for a reason. I doubt a random scientist could do detective work better. There are some cases where it's clear that the wrong person was executed but that's a small number. The other 95%+ is unknown

I read Stanley "Tookie" Williams book in 6th grade. I felt so bad when I found out he had been put to death. Maybe he deserved prison, and for due time, but I agree, he was truly remorseful for the things he had done and was destined to be remembered for.

The issue is the system equates time to rehabilitation rather than developing and helping someone direct and control their mental health. The longer you are in the system you are stuck in the system, many people get released and are stuck in a loop of being controlled and directed, that loop changes you and forces you to feel as if you can not function without the system

Me personally I grew up in a bad place and some people did terrible stuff to me. In the moment yeah I hated them and grew with anger. Genuinely asking if you know any people directly who are "positive people" who have been through cruel experiences...?

The logic of the death penalty is astounding to me. We have discussed it many times in my European history class and I used to have the same viewpoint of the pro death penalty side. But then I began to look at the hypocrisy of killing someone who killed someone. Who are we to decide who lives or dies? If we are trying to deter death and crime then we should not commit another crime. That is only a cycle and it’s never been effective and it will never be.

It’s a example for people to express their foundation of morality. Is it better to punish or to bring understanding? Should you do both? I will say that it’s a bad example in a wildly different context, but it opens up a discussion in morality and it’s intrinsic lack of actual tangibility outside of our human perception. What she did, however, was kinda like bringing up a simple addition problem in a discussion about theoretical mathematics. Idk 🤷‍♀️

There have been 192 death row exonerations in the US since 1973. But that isn't close to the total number of innocent people. Once you're in prison you have no resources. Most innocent people will never get exonerated. And that number doesn't count people who have been exonerated from life sentences or other sentences. There are lots of innocent people in prison

@@rens3286 An eye for an eye and the whole world goes blind. If someone does something it's just going to cause a chain reaction of someone else going to go get back at that person. I don't disagree with the death penalty personally, but we really should put more consideration into the circumstances of what happened and why it happened. Some people are just cold blooded killers, some people however commit a murder once (I say murder because it's still a murder no matter the circumstances), and would never do it again. Say for instance the woman that set the man on fire for what happened to her daughter. I don't think she should get the death penalty. Life in prison? Maybe. Life in prison with a CHANCE to eventually go free on a supervised parole? Absolutely. I also think however she should have gone to the cops and that the guy deserved to go through the due process of the law. I feel like he should have got the death penalty, but that's up to the courts. Two wrongs don't make a right but my whole point in stating this is there are most of the time circumstances where bad stuff happens to family or children and during a fit of rage someone acts out. I think the death penalty should be a last ditch effort or saved for the most heinous crimes. I'm a bigger fan of life in prison for most of the people. But someone that say murders an entire family in my opinion does deserve the death penalty.

Official Barack Hussein Obama II his argument is not derived from a delusional stand point of everyone being a good person, but more so the rehabilitation for criminals and opportunities. There’s a very thin line between punishment and rehabilitation in this country. The Probations and parole systems are terrible considering the fact that most of them don’t care about you. Most parole officers see between 100-150 people a week! Imagine that and on top of that, paper work for each person in a 40 hour week schedule...It’s a very interesting way in how The system operates. Statistically speaking most people that go to jail are very likely to just end up right back in because of the lack of resource and crappy rehab system. I love that guy’s optimism, and don’t confuse optimism with delusion, a lot of people have that huge misconception :)

I absolutely love this episode 🤍💯

Even if you can't bring yourself to forgive the person (because quite honestly I think that's unrealistic especially considering the multitude of circumstances) you have to ask yourself "do they deserve to die, does their life deserve to be taken away? And in the case of them killing others, should more lives be taken? is that a solution or is that based off of emotions?" I would also be curious to hear their views on abortions.

I think the afro guy will forgive me if torture him for 100 days straight ( but i will never)

first with the death penalty, 4% of the people who are put to death because of that are INNOCENT!!! that is outrageous. the second thing is that i thing of it as a way out of whatever that person has done. if someone hypothetically killed people they should rot on prison. not get killed, it’s almost like they’re let out of that.

I cannot believe that only one person agreed to the fact that if people truly apologize their punishment should be reduced! I cannot believe it. Thaa..as he said. Over and over again. Thumbs up for the afro hair dude! I so wish that more of us would find that light in themselves :)

Prison is not for punishment, it is for reabilitation. Apologizing means they are acknowledging their mistake, and they will not do that again (unless they are lying).

The.Filenzi I disagree completely. Do you really think sociopathic serial killers are susceptible to being rehabilitated? Rehabilitation does happen, I agree, but do you think the families of victims of murder only want rehabilitation. Imagine a 10 year old daughter being raped and murdered, and imagine it is your daughter. Does your moral philosophy hold up to scrutiny at that point? Maybe it does. Should people incapable of being rehabilitated-they do exist-not be sent to prison at all? If your only justification for prison is rehabilitation, then by what right should a sociopath incapable of being rehabilitated be sentenced to prison and not just outright executed?

Alot of people wouldn't know a veteran came up with the idea to kneel for the flag out of respect to it and the fallen brothers and sisters and I think this show could broadcast that BEAUTIFULLY to SO many people who still don't know, so thanks for sharing that idea Nyla! I hope they consider it!

leonard u Colin Kaepernick did not kneel for the flag to show disrespect, as he has stated he meant no harm and has family and friends in the military. He was trying to peacefully protest for those of color that have not been blessed with the same amount of freedom that most of us have. He said, and I quote, “I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color," To me, this is bigger than football and it would be selfish on my part to look the other way. There are bodies in the street and people getting paid leave and getting away with murder."

There has never been a case of a serial killer learning empathy

It's so wholesome that after the debate they are able to feel empathy an hug each other, it is really the sign of a well executed debate.
