Dear Sony - Thank you for the mirrorless camera revolution

Ғылым және технология

This is how Sony created the Mirrorless revolution, came out on top and has paved the way for the next Mirrorless camera innovators. We look at hows Sonys mirrorless success is much like that of Apple in the early 2000's.
Sony mirrorless camera took command of a new industry, the mirrorless camera world and focussed on the consumer first. Like apple, this world already existed but they dominated.
#mirrorlesscamera #sonyalpha #PIC
Like apple they created hype, launched products almost yearly and created a marketing storm every time. Their products looked good, no, their products looked incredible. Although they were cameras themselves they photographed well. They built a community of people who wanted to show off they they had a Sony mirrorless. Sony focussed on the new world, their products were socially viable …. Search for a sony A7s camera on instagram and you see hundreds of photos of the camera itself. The perfect marketing for the mirrorless camera.
Companies like nikon and canon have not capitalized on this. When was the last time you saw a great photo of a Nikon DSLR camera. Nobody does it. Sony has beautiful sharp shiny, sleek edges. Sony Mirrorless cameras look strong, angular and sexy. They look like the new shooter, the young, the hip the early adopters.
Search for a Nikon mirrorless camera or Canon mirrorless camera and you just see the photos taken on the camera not the camera itself.
You might be thinking, well they are cameras and image quality is what matters. Wrong, nikon is a company, sales is what matters. Remember apple in 1997. You can sell 10,000 professional cameras to the top professionals or you can sell millions of slightly cheaper nearly pro cameras to millions of consumers. If you don’t bring in the money you can’t fund research and development, you wont stay relevant and your business fails.
In the past companies dictated to the consumer what they should want. Sony was different. People say to Sony we want better focusing, they do it, better batteries, done, 5 axes sensor stabilization done. Perfect first time? Not at all, but hey they were listening, trying and often delivering. Cameras like the sony a7iii, sony alpha a6000 or any of the Sony Alpha range.
Just sitting back and saying we have done this for 100 years just isn’t good enough. We the consumer don’t care what you did, we care what you are doing. You can create the world's best DSLR but mirrorless is what everyone is talking about. In a battle between mirrorless vs dslr then mirrorless would win the marketing battle although DSLR might still win the usability battle, but the gap is closing. It’s like launching a sony walkman with all the latest tech when everyone is talking about the iPod. Cameras are going to go mirrorless and that’s why sony is currently winning. Mirrorless camera pictures are improving with every update and mirrorless camera video is just sooooooo good. sony a7iii video.
I think this is the next era for Mirrorless cameras, in fact cameras as a whole. More competition, driving innovation, pushing technological boundaries. The more players in the game the faster the innovation. Thanks to Sony we are going to see the fastest technological advancement in digital photography we have ever seen. With more companies bringing out mirrorless system we will start seeing features we never dreamt about. We will see companies fail, see products fail, BUT we will see the bar raised higher, leaps made larger and progress made faster.
So…. thank you to sony for starting the mirrorless revolution. Thank you to all the companies who will challenge you. Who knows who will have the best mirrorless camera 2018 or the best mirrorless camera for beginners
Who knows who will stay on top, for me, well I don’t care. I’m just thankful for the companies who fight amongst themselves, so that we, the humble consumer can use the most technologically advanced camera systems the world has ever seen.
The nikon mirrorless camera is on its way and could be the most important mirrorless camera of 2018.

Excellent vid, analogies, and points about consumers and product development! Puts things in contemporary perspective - am old enough to have had a Commodore 64 as a first computer. Sony is largely an electronics co., a reason I believe they were able to make the advances they did. The Sony Mavika should have been in there somewhere. From time to time there are articles about new photographic technologies in the pipeline that would supplant current lens and sensor designs entirely - dark horses now, but who knows what will emerge, take hold for a time, and then be supplanted (wax to whale oil, to tungsten to LEDs). But we still have crayons 😁.

Some companies are driven by passion for what they do (Apple, Nikon, BMW), while others are clearly driven just by market share growth (Sony, Samsung, Hyundai). Then 2014 came around and all of a sudden it was the GH4 that kick started for me. In 2015 it was the a6300 that got me. In 2016 it was the a6500. In 2018 it was the a7iii. In 4 years I bought more cameras and lenses than I had in the previous 20 years. I’m waiting for the a7s3. So yes Sony is the clear leader and canikon will go the way of blackberries and Nokia.

Might also want to note that the digital camera industry has been shrinking for a long time as smartphones become more sophisticated. There are still more professionals on Canon and Nikon. For overall mirroless sales within the last decades (at least for Japan) Olympus is generally at the top.

@@clearlyed Correct me if I'm wrong but Film to digital was a revolution because it changed literally everything (principles, medium, techniques, quality, storage etc etc.) . DSLR to Mirrorless keeps almost everything the same. Same principles based on the same digital sensor just without the mirror/prism thing that brings mainly the size advantage. What am I missing?

  • @clearlyed

    @clearlyed

I guess we are taking about the differences in what we see as a revolution. for me its more about social change. I think we are going to see a huge shift in the way the photography and video community interact with cameras. mirrorless and DSLR do work differently and it means the user must interact and think differently. because I think that there is going to be a huge shift and in the next 10 years maybe a total shift to mirrorless cameras I saw this as a revolution. But you are right, I was probably overdoing it somewhat. hahaha

@@clearlyed Sure, we will find out eventually, I have no doubt m-less cameras will become much more popular in 4 years and I don't mean to desregard the new technology. My point was that method of focusing does not make as substential difference as the actual way of light processing was in mid 2000. But everybody silently switched to digital without excessive hype, because that was undeniable progress. As for ml vs dslr, personally I live fine with traditional viewfinder and don't really mind the live view focusing apart from focus peaking. But it is good to have this feature anyway. And I am certanly considering to get z6 or z7 l (btw, have you seen the fresh"leaked" fotos of these two?))) For me the best thing in recent developments is that the competition made nikon to introduce their new mount. Will I move to ml if they can make a superb evf while improving battery life? Not sure yet.

Rewriting history, somewhat. Sony was still messing around with translucent mirrors on their Alpha system when m4/3 showed them how it could be done. It was Olympus and Panasonic who took the initial leap of faith to mirrorless (because they had less to lose). Sony finally saw the way forward and kudos for that, but they would not have done it so quickly without seeing what m4/3 was going to be capable of. So, no way did Sony "create" the mirrorless revolution, but they are a major driver (at least until Canon gets properly in the game).

Good comparison between Apple and Sony! Why? Well, I read ones in a book that Steve Jobs admires Sony and how they built products. I think Sony with Mirrorless cameras can achieve a lot of innovation, and that's great for the consumer because technology is better and better all the time an as photographers we need more innovation to be more eficient.

Yes to the faster development but will the market grow? I’m skeptical because the entire process of photography has been streamlined by smartphones. Easier than ever and with results that are good enough. Yup, there will certainly be more and more people who dive more deeply into the art that is photography as well as filmography but will the market size increase massively? I am skeptical. Excellent video though!

Mirrorless sale went up 30% last year, against a downward trend for camera as a whole, there is a market if the products are good.

I think you missed a massive point, most of the research money for the sensor came from apple that pushed the sony sensor designs they could in return play out in their cameras once they took over minolta. We will see that happen again with the stacked sensor concepts first deployed in the smaller sensors and proto-typed in the a9... they will force a even more simple design where next to the mirror also the shutter will go and i suspect over time even the ibis will go again less moving parts for sony mostly driven by their sales in phones and car sensors. It is true they did listen on what sucked on their first few tries and that would should be a lesson to canon and nikon but even if they do they have the sensor power of sony to follow .. unless samsung jumps back in and join either canon or nikon bigtime.. just my 2 cents...

I sold my Leica and bought an A7RIII because I thought it was the best camera ever produced. It worked well one month ; and then I had a fist break down, then a second one, then a third one,... then I sold it all. The after sales service is more than bad and the costumer department is enough to make you cry. Good buy Sony !

If you're talking about the camera freezing with some lenses, that can happen when you have a bad adapter, assuming you're trying to use lenses designed for other cameras with the A7RIII.

I think this video missed one thing. Sony is a sensor manufacturer first and foremost that happens to build a camera. All the top camera makers send their designs to Sony to make sensors or just buy what Sony already have in their lineup.

I have a lot of envy for the early adopters of the mirrorless technologies. running my production company I just could take the risk. however have often thought I should have done. but hey, the miriness camera race is on. Im excited and think I may actually get involved now.

The only good reason to shoot mirrorless, for me, is the ability to easily adapt vintage manual lenses. I really hope this doesn't turn out into a mirrorless war where each company issues a new 2000$ camera each year! It's gonna be a waste of resources for the companies and it'll turn photography and videography alike into a pointles fanboi specs game, where you won't be focusing on the actual result but on the gear you can afford. Seems like hell to me.
