    Great shot and presentation, Ed. I came up in the film days, and did a lot of 5x4 studio shooting before going digital. Costs of film and processing required pretty demanding in-camera work, with careful attention to exposure, composition, colour temperatures and balancing. (Photoshop? Huh? Whazzat?) We can easily become a bit lazy with all the amazing technology at our fingertips, and it's nice to reset the brain once in a while and remember how to get it right "in camera." Bravo!

    I came up in the film days also, got my formal education at the photo school at Daytona Beach back when there were only 3, Daytona, Brooks Institute & the Rochester Institute of Technology. I sort of feel photographers today have it way too easy with all the technology of LR & PS. Hell, I had to learn The Zone System with my 4x5 view camera & all the commercial work was done on a 4x5. We had to physically retouch prints and negatives. LOL That was our Photoshop :-) Now photographers want to get lens flare and we tried to avoid it back in the stone age.

    How long did it take to set all that up though and seemed like a lot of gear? What about if you (or your customer) wants a change made? Pull a few sliders in Photoshop vs reshoot the whole thing? Just playing Devil's advocate here.

  • @clearlyed

    So this was about a 2 hour setup. I also shot the backbreaking and lens separately just Incase. There is always photoshop for a retouch. Remove some water soak Dana little color change but the most important thing is to know when the client wants beige you shoot product photography. If not you are just shooting for fun. I have never had to reshoot a product though.

    That's great, but if you have managers who change their minds about backgrounds 5 times after the product has been shot, you just do it on a plain background and Photoshop the hell out of it.

    I photograph watches (very challenging subject) and when I get a brief to shoot a beauty shot (I'm usually sent Apple watch or Rolex images as a reference) on a black background, I'm then asked to cut it out and place it on a white background which doesn't work as metallic surfaces will look different about on different colours.

    You don't have to be a millionaire to do this, you can do it with much more affordable equipment. What you get with better gear is more control and less messing about. He's explaining the principle behind how to get such a shot.

  • @clearlyed

    @clearlyed

    thanks so much for the comment. unfortunately for me I am also not a millionaire. This is the principles of real lighting setups. you could achieve something similar with lights in a home and some pieces of wood and aluminum foil. I just can't agree that some software is more creative than real life. I think they can both be equally as creative but in very different ways. Thanks for watching.

    I also consider that 'time is money'. Also, I'd guess Ed just happens to have that equipment. I've been replicating his concept with cheap/$100 speedlites, and getting great results. Plus, I enjoy taking pictures, not sitting at a computer. :-) But I'm getting old...

    Thank you for your thoughts and while I very much enjoy improving and developing through comments you aggressive and rude manner is not appreciated. Maybe you monitor need calibrating as the are details through the shadows and all areas can clearly be seen. That being said I will play with other lighting techniques for the future. This is how I designed the photo. I am constantly trying trying to improve and always interacting with kindness. I hope you can say the same.
