    I was about 15 when this aired. One of the things I appreciate most about watching these clips is it reminds me of my dad, sitting in his recliner in his boxers with his alka-seltzer fizzing beside him, laughing at all these guys from his generation. I miss my dad, and I miss these times.

    Yeah my dad watched from his recliner too in bvds and socks. Had one of those end tables with the magazine rack and attached early American style lampshade. He drilled holes on one side to hold his pipes and hung floss swords from the lamp switch. Had a bottle of Mentholatum and another of Tums. Mom just let him have his spot. And NOBODY was allowed to take any of his shit or sit there. (No problem since he sat in his underwear!) Grandkids were always trying to steal his fruit flavored Tums because they tasted like SweetTarts ! Sure miss him.

    I was blessed with a near 60-year career as a studio singer and one of my most favorite gigs was singing backup in an 8-voice group for six years on the Dean Martin TY Show. Dean was the greatest…kind, funny, treated everyone with respect and no star ego ever. I miss you, my favorite boss. Thanks for the memories ❤️❤️❤️

    Deano was the absolute coolest cat. He had such charm and grace and mischievousness with a great smile, laugh and incredible voice. Plus he boxed for some years when he was young. How cool for you to have gotten to be around him at work and probably Christmas party event thing. Him, Clint Eastwood and Jimmy Stewart are class acts.

Dean Martin is a distinctly unique combination of a handsome crooner, a likeable drunk, variety show host, dancer, comedian, straight man and dramatic actor. @@uncletio0428 Why? Because they walk after the course of the world. They give their service to their flesh and this world’s evil. They relish in material things which one day will crumble into dust. Theirs is a citizenship under the wicked god of this world, and unfortunately are promised death and judgement as a result of their sin (l Corinthians 15:22 KJV). But they could have the promise of really “having it all.” They could be rich in “all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ” by being a member of the church, His body ( Ephesians 1:3; l Corinthians 12:27; Colossians 1:18 KJV). Instead of a citizenship here, they could receive a citizenship in heaven (Philippians 3:20 KJV). Saved as incorruptible and righteous through Jesus Christ with no death or judgement (l Corinthians 15:22 KJV) by believing the gospel of the grace of God revealed to Apostle Paul by the ascended Lord Jesus Christ (l Corinthians 15:1-4).

    God the longer it goes on the better it gets. I love it. They aren't promoting anything, they aren't fake interviewing with pre-interview questions, they aren't comedians doing their sets as fake-interviews...they're just shooting the shit, improvising, making it up, hilarious, awkward, weird, fantastic conversation. And Dean is definitely not "fake-drunk" here...he's always in control, even when drunk. He's unbelievable. What a gem.

    Interesting how Dean played the drunk so well, of course the people around him played along. After his death many of his fellow performers open up to the truth he drank very little. Dean often used apple juice as it had the look of a strong drink. One of the give a ways, the same jokes such as when he looked around and said "how all these people get into your room" were part of his well rehearsed routines. Jerry seinfeld told a story about when he was just getting started in the business, and had to follow dean as a guess. Before going on the two talked a bit back stage and Dean was stone sober, Jerry was amazed how easily he sled into the tipsy guest while in the interview.

    Dean did not rehearse anything. He'd memorize lines for a movie, but that was about it. Ten years playing slapstick comedy with Jerry Lewis gave him all the improv experience he needed, and he was always very good at it. Not as overbearing as Jerry Lewis, but often funnier.

    I understand that I'm certainly biased when I say Johnny Carson was the standard of late night talk shows. Being born in 1955, he came into my orbit when I was maybe 10/11yrs old. Watching these KZread and nostalgic channels now, that show reruns of the shows, what really stands out with Carson, was his innate ability to 'lightly' poke fun at whomever was the president, which is the way it should be. But now? It's really kind of sad what passes as late night talk. I don't watch the shows of course, as my generation as long gone out of the limelight, but the articles I'll see online, that comment on the vitriol that these late night hosts now exhibit on a nightly basis. It's really kind of sad.

    It will never be that way again and that is why it is so special to those of us who remember it like it was yesterday. These men were role models who shaped our lives in small, large and ways we are not even aware of. Despite all the troubles of the time, we could always relax and get a much needed reality check by watching Carson at the end of the day. We knew it wouldn't last forever and now 40 years later we wake up with the realization that "forever" is here. The younger generation today does not know what they have missed and you can't tell them. That is their loss and that is the tragedy of being reminded of what "we", the old Frankie/Annette generation have lost over the years. Thanks guys for making it special.

    Roll models?? Hardly and not by a long shot! It is well known that Dean and Johnny were womanizers and hard drinkers, especially Dean. You'll learn a lot.

    MaryMac I'm not the one who needs to "learn a lot, toots"! It was well known that Dean's act of being a drinker and carouser was just that, an "act". Every public figure of every time in history has their own bumps and barnacles, the fact remains that they largely kept it to themselves and which was only made public after some tell all publication years and years later. People had the courtesy and ethical moorings not to trot it out for sensationalist purposes like they do today which serves no purpose other than the almighty dollar. I "read a book once"...my gawd, what a weak statement! Rock Hudson's homosexuality was an open secret in Hollywood but was generally unknown outside the trade (same with Paul Lynde and both Darin's from Bewitched). George Reeve's dalliance with a mob bosses wife wasnt known until 30 years after his death. Problem is, you've been sold a bill of goods that no one, regardless of argument, will ever change your mind or enlighten you. Like I said, I was there, I was lucky and fortunate enough to know some of these people personally and can only tell you not to believe everything you read unless you get the information from a variety of sources including the primary. Besides, they were MY role models, and although they obviously weren't yours, I find your disrespect of me and what "I think and believe" as cowardly and tasteless befitting the troll you probably are. Get a life and stop butchering things of which you have no idea of what your speaking about. Grow up!

    You hit the nail on the head with you comment. Political correctness has gone wild. Oh and the Children's Television Council would also file a lawsuit in case any erstwhile children might have happened to be up that late with parents thinking they are now scarred for life. Great comment Sobison.

    ossarider have u ever had a more than two drinks? He is clearly drunk here, watch his breathing, that alone gives it away, and I love it. Greatest performer ever, I don’t get why people feel the need to defend his drinking or not drinking. Sometimes it was faked, sometimes it wasn’t, simply as that. As dean said himself:“ I feel bad for people who don’t drink, because when they wake up in the morning, this is as good as they gonna feel.“

  • @ossarider

    @ossarider

    +Man Whodrinksbeer he is stone cold sober. I know whereof I speak. You don’t. Successful comics don’t drink before their performance. Their timing would be off. You can tell after he makes a couple of supposedly drunken quips he stops for a few seconds and then laughed like it’s an in joke. Dean Martin drank, but never to excess

  • @manwhodrinksbeer

    ossarider im not saying that he is totally wasted, just in a nice warm buzzed up place, and u can be in that place and sometimes have even better timing, I’m a comic and like to drink, doesn’t mean I’m getting trashed before a gig, but a couple of drinks never hurt nobody as dean pointed out on numerous occasions as u probably know. But to claim that he is sober is just foolish and it’s not necessary to try to make a point out of it. Salud!

    All the 'Great Ones' from when we were kids are gone now. Even Tim Conway is gone. Jackie Gleason, Art Carney, Red Skelton, Milton Berle, Jack Lemmon, Jerry Lewis, Henry Fonda, Larry Hagman, Walter Matthau etc. etc. And if they're not gone they're REALLY old. The only actor I can think of from the 50's & 60's who's STILL on TV today is David McCallum. Norman Lloyd & Kirk Douglas are older and still around but no longer active. Bob Newhart is still here, too. God bless them all!
