I went to the football in the 80s. Black players were abused so much, and I cringe at how the police turned a blind eye. And how it was seemed as normal then. This was in lower league level, but it was division one at the time as well. It has got a lot better these days, but not totally eradicated yet. Fans need to call it out when they see it now

As much as we all love football, it can be a big part of your life, I think one thing that people seem to forget is that it's just a game at the end of the day. It brings a lot of emotion of of us, the incredible highs and the horrific lows, but it's still just a game. The excuses you hear whenever there's a racist incident, like "Tension and emotions are running high," is no excuse at all. It shouldn't just be down to the players to report it, and I know there's the Kick It Out campaign, but I think fans need to step up a bit more when this happens and report it, whether it is targeted at a player who plays for the side you support, or the opposition, it doesn't matter. And the clubs and leagues need to follow through with punishments because too many people get away with it. These people need to be banned for life from all stadiums and the police need to be informed and they need to follow through too. I know the person on Twitter who targeted Rio Ferdinand was jailed for (I think) 6 months, but cases like that are too few and far between, if punishments happened more frequently, people would at least be much more hesitant in hurling names at people, it would cause them to do what a lot of people don't these days - think before they spoke.

I'm a Canadian and Liverpool fan who was fortunate enough to get tickets to a game at Anfield and have just returned home. While in the UK I continually saw the "See it, say it, sort it" campaign and am not sure why this is not used to fight racism at football games. Whenever there are incidents of racism it seems there is an inability to track down the guilty parties and talk of going thru stadium video footage (after the fact ). Whenever anyone exhibits racist and other discriminatory and/or abusive behaviour why are the other fans in the immediate vicinity not immediately pointing them and their behaviour out ( See it, say it, sort it ). Are they complicit or scared ? - I'm not sure which is worse. Keep up the good work - the three of you have incredible chemistry.

It is not something to make fun of and it is good that it is being brought up to the attention of everybody! but think of one thing: just like Micah says, it all comes down to the education the kids receive in their homes. this is the first step...it starts at home, at school, etc...everybody is bullied at one point in life,...everybody! that is clear!

For walls at defensive free kicks, it isn’t solely the defender or the keeper who lines it up - they do it together. You put on defender directly between the ball and that near post, and then have another man outside him. It’s up to the keeper to stand on the post and tell that first man to go left or right, so he’s in line, and then the defence organises from there, starting with the guy on the outside of the wall. Keeper decides how many he wants, and then defenders will organise the wall and then tactics of the wall (jump or charge if a touch is taken etc), and how the rest of the team defends (man or zonal for crosses and rebounds etc). This is why Tony moving the ball a yard to his right, and therefore in line with the guy on the end of the wall was made into a bigger issue than it usually would be.

Madrid’s first goal was from a penalty which probably was right but it was like the red couldn’t wait to get Madrid back into the game. Almería had a third goal disallowed for a fouls in the build-up which was an absolute nonsense. As for the winner, it was a handball, but he didn’t punch it in, it was off his shoulder. That said, i still don’t think it should’ve been allowed, as it was more his upper arm than shoulder. If you imagine that everyone’s arms/shoulders are at a right angle (obviously not true), that makes your shoulder horizontal, and your arm is therefore vertical, the ball hit on the vertical. That was just for descriptive purposes, hi arm was actually forward a bit which caused the ball to go upwards and loop into the top corner. The ref was only shown one angle of the incident though, which, as it turns out, is the one that makes it look 100% like it’s come off his shoulder. Real get it in their favour. There’s a few Premier League clubs who have their replays shown to the ref in a way that the ref. Is going to go against them.

All the media suddenly lavishing praise on Klopp really rubs me the wrong way. Just a few months ago everyone in england and the media took glee in our struggles and were telling anyone who would listen that Klopp was finished at the top level, he'd probably have to move on to take the germany job etc etc. Even more recently people couldnt mock us enough for the whole "replay the spurs match" thing (which by the way is the only reason theres so much scrutiny of refs and var now). Now all of a sudden he's everyone's favorite manager...gimme a break. everyones jumping on the bandwagon but as soon as we encounter a hurdle everyone will say he's washed again.

Totally agree with more impactful sanctions such as point deduction, closed stadiums and banning of fans. Following this, these clubs should be heavily fined and made part of a program to implement and monitor if corrvective meausres are put in place. If no improvements ban the teams from local and international competitions, no transfers, we need to go "heavy" to minimize or hopefully irradicate this plague called racism. Btw - Work on your Portuguese 😂 its "Jota Goal"! Keep up the good work lads!

I remember Marvin Sordell accusing Millwall of being racist, he ran around to the papers saying it’s unfair, when questioned by the FA he explained that he was called fish face. Turns out it was a 9 year old boy, referencing his face and big eyes. 1 or 3 people in a country does not make a country or fan base racist. 95% of the online abuse is from Eastern Europe.

Why does this not happen in rugby, cricket, golf, tennis. Why is it a problem with football fans.

  • @andrewsteer8860

Rugby is game for barbarians, played by gentlemen I think this has something to do with the social demographics that gravitate to the different sports, especially when it comes to watching them live. Cricket, golf, tennis are all what I would call ‘middle class sports’, you tend to get more well educated people in the crowds. This is somewhat true of rugby as well. Of course that’s a massive generalisation but that’s my take on it.

Hopefully the fans will self police those idiots. But the real reason walking off hurts football is the viewing figures and revenue. If Sky or BT start losing games and views for games being called off, you'd soon see how quickly they're able to do something about it

Instead of the players leave, clear the section of fans or the stand or the stadium. If the fans suffer they will target the racists who are ruining their matchday. And the media can help by inviting fan reps on to ask why fans are racist rather than asking players how they feel about racism. Its a fan problem and fans have to solve it.
