    Very interesting and good presentation. I have a xbox e with same issue, driving me crazy! Going to look at that board now wish me luck and thank you. Ok done, not the capacitor because mine is the e version. The board has been modified presumably to correct the design fault you mention above. No it was the connecting plug which had developed grubby terminals over time resulting in loss of power to the board. Took it out and in a few times to clean the connections, job done, thank you for the lead hope this helps others.

    I think manufacturers today make things deliberately difficult to access in order to repair, they'd much rather have you go out and buy a new one. I hope your finger isn't to charred bro.

    Caps like that are just to remove "noise" from the power line feeding chips to make sure they don't glitch and a lot of the time it's never an issue.

    Do you need a hot air rework station or can you just add a big solder blob to remove the cap? My friend has this same problem on a Halo Reach edition and I want to remove the cap without destroying the pads. I have a Weller analog soldering station but no hot air. On another video, the guy said to replace it with a 100nF 50v cap but I'm not sure if that's correct or not. This would be my first attempt at an SMD component replacement.

  • @JonnyFix

    @JonnyFix

    For sure there's nothing wrong with a large blob of solder to remove it. Sometimes it's hard to remove these as the end can almost be welded to the pad if it's been really hot or arcing. If you did lose a pad you could scrape back the trace and solder to that then run a small wire from the other end to the next trace. That value of cap should work. You might even find it functions just fine without the cap to.

    I have a 360 that dosnt turn on. I plug the power adapter in the wall and the power brick goes orange and when I plug it into the xbox the light turns red. I replaced the power button board and nothing changed. I checked the USB pins and they seem fine. The power adapter is fine cuz it works perfect with my other 360. I think a capacitor may have went bad on the main board but I'm not any good at tracing them or have a voltage meter.

    So I know it's been 5 years but I'm wondering if the RF board where it got super hot to the touch was just as hot after your fix ? I ask bc I also burned some index finger and thumb skin when trying to power it on. Sadly my ribbon cable tore when putting the 360 together so it is dead until I can get a new glossy black cover with the ribbon intact. I don't know if I also need to replace the RF board. It just seemed to me to be incredibly hot to be normal operating procedure.

  • @JonnyFix

    @JonnyFix

    It was hot because of the failed capacitor. It was cold after the repair. If yours is burning you then it still has a fault that needs to be addressed.

    My Xbox 360 power adaptor has a red light instead of green or orange, It says on the sticker "Red = Power fault". The console won't turn on at all, but the metal chassis seems to be conducting electricity as my line tester lights up when touched. If the power adapter has the red light going and if it has detected a fault shouldn't it prevent power from going to the console? I wonder if the entire console board is fried as a result of this thought I didn't see any burnt capacitors or other components when I opened it up. I have the old "fat" power brick, quite hard to come by not sure if it can even be fixed.

  • @JonnyFix

    Not sure what your line tester is picking up on but I'm sure the brick is repairable. Just make sure the main input capacitor has discharged before poking around in there.

    @@canicani8206 Hard to say, obviously it didn't die from the same cause. I would check the area you worked on make sure there's no stray solder left behind causing a problem. You may have disturbed something else that was about to fail anyway (bad connection maybe). I would treat the second failure as likely a different fault and try to find it.

    You said " the console cant be turned on using its wired controller connected to the back. The console turns on after pressing the xbox logo on the controller." So this means the controller is talking to xbox wirelessly only to turn it on then it doesn't work? OR is that a spelling mistake and you meant it CAN be turned on when plugged into the back. If the front panel is not working I think that's where the wireless connection is managed so obviously fix that first then try fault find any pairing issues.

    If you mean the power enable signal at 6:30 then that's normal and you need to check if the yellow wire (better to check at the motherboard connector rather than break open the power adapter) is reading 12V when you tap power button. If yes you have a motherboard fault to find. If no you probably need a new power adapter. If you know anyone else with one of these try their adapter.

    Good day Jonny fix. I have the exact same symptoms. PSU light turns green when feedback voltage manually supplied. I opened the console found C57 on the front panel but it is not shorted, it is open circuit. Removed the cap and it works. I would like to replace the cap with the same value but I cannot find any schematic for this. Perhaps you know the value?

  • @JonnyFix

    @JonnyFix

    5 ай бұрын

    I don't know the value sorry. You could measure the voltage on the pads and then chose a higher rated cap (e.g. if 12 go 16 or 25) and say 10uF would be fine. It is unusual for a cap to cause a problem when not shorted as a normal one will appear open circuit. The only exception is I've seen on these ceramic caps is they can go short after a certain voltage is applied..... maybe that was happening in your one and eventually it would have become always short.
