    Great stuff, guys. Your advice is really well-given. I think I've decided to pull the moldings off my ancient Chevy I've acquired as a winter beater. They're wobbly and the chrome on them has popped off; they look like heck.

    You DO NOT want to use blue shop paper towels for this job. Use a micro fiber towel for the polishing and a wash mitt with car wash soap to clean it before removing the tape residue. A micro fiber cutting pad with a polishing compound is best for surface correction.

    I actually wanted to be slightly abrasive because the paint has been faded over the years and will help it blend. Keep in mind that scratch remover stuff is abrasive too, how else do you think it gets rid of scratches? We just want it to blend. But I get what you're saying.

    Compound or polish is used for that... it's controllable. Blue shop towels are made from wood... and scratch for sure... you don't want to do that to a paint job....

    HazzMatt Sammeem There's actually some logic with using that particular wipe. We figured because the paint under the molding had never seen sun and using the scratch remover (which is also abrasive) it would help blend the sun faded paint with the paint not exposed to any.

    Did you do this on your Silverado? Was any paint fade noticeable? I have an 04 Trailblazer I want to do it on, but I'm scared of a non-faded "stripe" where the moldings used to be.

    WD-40 is perfect to remove the double sided tape residue. WD-40 eats paint? Lol! Whatchasmokinsmokey? Soak it with WD-40 for a month and the residue will come off effortlessly with a plastic scraper. That's how I did mine. No issues. No damage. No scratches. Use 3M VHB double sided tape on a hot summer day to reapply the moldings and the vehicle will be good as new.

    what was gm thinking when they designed those moldings? a lot of silverados have them and they completely destroy the appearance of the truck. the painted ones are much better, but i prefer no moldings at all. just be careful where you park, who cares if you have to walk a little further.

    They were probably thinking function over form. And a lot of pieces like that seemed to be style in a similar fashion to their 90's product. They're doing a much better job now.

  • @dh66

    Sam Ace Rothstein it doesn't matter how you park, it's how other people park. Once those mouldings are gone, say goodbye to your ding free door. A clean moulding looks better than shitty door dings all over the side, IMO

  • @SamAceRothstein

    @SamAceRothstein

    6 жыл бұрын

    are you high? it absolutely makes a difference where you park. if you're parking in crowded areas or not finding end spots where you can leave extra space between yourself and the next car, then you are significantly increasing your chance of dings, it's only logical. i don't know what you're talking about, but those moldings are positively hideous. i'd rather get the dings, they're way less noticeable and there are professionals who can easily remove any door ding who charge per panel or per dent depending on who you go with. no one is going to see your typical door ding from 10 ft away, you'll see those ugly moldings from a mile off.

  • @dh66

    @dh66

    There are lots of times where you are either parking on the street or the parking lots are nearly full right to the back, and the side. Unless you live in flatlands where the parking lots are a mile long most of the time your going to be parking one over from someone and then someone parks beside you anyways. I think side moldings are beautiful, they really set the truck off right. Without them, the truck looks like a base model work truck with delete everything. Then again, that specific truck is lowered. Lowered trucks are for shmoes that can't afford a nice car and don't know WTH a truck is actually for.

  • @AnthonyJ350

    Dh66 That's pretty judgemental and uncessary. Did you know some of us like lowered truck's because you can no longer buy a body on frame car with a V8 and a 2WD truck is an alternative. What do you drive that makes you have this attitude?
