"DCC Ready" OR "DCC Equiped" - What's The Difference?

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

I got something in the mail to make my DC Locomotives "DCC Ready"
But will my Loco still run on DC? Lets find out.

From the DCCWiki: Summary: DCC-ready locomotives with 8-pin sockets are shipped with a factory-installed 8 pin blanking plug that shorts the rail pickups to the motor terminals (and headlights) in the absence of a decoder. This plug must be removed before installing the decoder and must be replaced if removing the controller and returning to analog operation” If your dcc ready board did not come with a blanking plug you can buy them separate.

This exactly. When using any type off DCC ready board you need a dummy plug for DC. If i remember Digitrax sells 8 or 9 pin dummy plugs. 5 pack for 22 USD. Soundtrax sells them 4 pack for 18 USD.

You need a dummy plug to replace the decoder

All DCC ready locos that come with the 8 pin socket and without a decoder, have an 8 pin dummy plug that completes the appropriate circuits. If you convert to DCC, you remove the plug and replace it with the 8 pin decoder. Note: I have no experience with 21 pin decoders, but I'm sure they have similar plugs and sockets.

I knew this board wouldn't work without the 8-pin shorting plug. Like others mentioned, you can purchase these separate or keep the ones removed from the DCC upgrade locomotives that you upgrade in the future. There's also way to do this with wires in the pins of the 8-pin plug, but I'll save the complication for another time or just go to the Wiki page for the 8-pin plug wiring diagram if you're curious. I suspect the seller left out the 8-pin shorting plugs to save costs.

Jumper from where the red wire is to the orange (and the blue for lights) and the black to the gray ( and yellow, white. with diodes for directional lighting).

Connecting DC to a DCC decoder is fine as it will auto switch to DC operation. There is a DCC setting that controls this as the locos often run better on DCC with the DC emulation disabled. Often DCC experts recommend disabling DC emulation because of this.

NO, There is a metal plug in to go in if there is no decoder. Look for the blanking plug if looks like the install plug just by itself.

I never knew about those DCC ready boards. I've always just hard wired decoders when turning DC locos into DCC ones. It looks like a good intermediate step. Thanks for the info.

It makes sense, as the basic decoders are the same price with or without the pins version.

You need a dummy jumper plug in place of the decoder to run in DC.

You`ve probablty seen if not, Theres another version of those boards that has a pair of lighting boards attached to,You need to bridge the terminals if no chips in place, RTR models have a blanking plate, you have no electrical connection if theres no chip or bridging plate, also some chips need dc function switching on the cv setting, though this can cause it`s own problems when placed on a dcc track, you can get a dcc run away and just shoots off.

Yep, you need dc jumpers and not the kind you wear. I'll send you a couple. I usually throw them away.

Your boards did not come with a DC dummy plug, or blanking plug? I am sure there is a way to do jumpers in the socket.

Oh man! Toss that Bachmann decoder. Sell it, just don't use it. Stay away from Bachmann and MRC decoders. Now, some Bachmann DCC equipped and Sound equipped have Soundtraxx decoders in them, they are good.

I’ll stick with plain old DC, I don’t like the sounds effects, there are “tiny” and unrealistic.

I agree to some extent about the sounds, but that will depend on the speaker you install. Personally I wanted dcc for all the other functions. Like realistic acceleration and stopping, multiple trains on the same track, two loco speed matching, ditch lighting, mars lighting etc etc. So much more than just noise my friend.
