Daycare Workers Accused of Dosing Kids With Antihistamines

Police say some daycare workers slipped kids drugs, such as Benadryl, to put them to sleep. Marissa Briar says on her firstborn’s third day at a Vermont daycare, she received a text message stating her baby was sick. An autopsy later revealed that her daughter, Harper Rose, was given a lethal dose of an allergy medication not meant for babies. Prosecutors charged the daycare owner with manslaughter and child cruelty. The daycare owner, Stacey Vaillancourt, pleaded not guilty and denies any wrongdoing. Inside Edition’s Lisa Guerrero has more.

Not with benedryl though. Like, if you did it to an adult, you wouldn't be charged either. If it was Xanax or ghb or something, then yes. I'm not saying I agree with it. I'm just saying that you're wrong in saying you could drug an adult with benedryl and it would be a crime but it's not with a kid.

My parents used to dose me with a little bit of vodka (3-4 shots) and 2 Benadryls back in my day (1980's). Knocked me right out, and turned me into the socially well adjusted person I am today. Is a tough situation....many parents must work and they don't have the means to hire a nanny at home or have that very needed support system as "family" to help with the kids....therefore they end up using a daycare. Thank God is not my case, I have the privilege to near my kids, I work from home and have a helper but I'm aware that the reality for many families is difficult and I can't judge the ones who use "day cares "

My best friend and babysitter gave sleeping pills to my newborn while I worked in the next room. She would take my baby for a short walk which was strange and then my baby would sleep all day and night. When I realized, put the pieces together, I FIRED her. I was out and called home to ask my husband if the baby was still sleeping, this was around 8pm. He told me she was. I told him to wake her up any way he could and I drove home like a bat out of hell and put my baby in a home daycare where the husband I discovered was using a bathroom where they put her crib. OMG. My parents stepped in and I paid them. Im so sick even 34 years later. Im asking all you moms to put hidden cameras in your baby sitters rooms.

I bought a bottle of allergy medicina and a bottle of sleep aid. the only difference was the allergy bottle said to take one pill and the sleep aid bottle said to take two pills. Exact same medication, different dose, differnt use. But that was for an adult, not for a wriggling grub of a baby. in fact, looking at the sleep aid bottle, it says to NOT use for children under the age of 12. I think they have benedryl for children at a much lower dose, but obviously the worker was not treating the children for allergies.. she was giving the babies a dose meant for people ages 12 and older. As a former day care teacher who has worked with infants on up to preschoolers...I cannot even imagine a scenario such as this one. Why would anyone even think of doing such a thing?? When I was an infant teacher, a parent once sent some otc medicine for me to give to her infant. The dosage she wanted me to give was for an older child (per the instructions on the bottle). I refused to give the medication & called the parent at work, advising her not to give that dosage even at home & to ask her doctor before giving it to her infant at all. Babies sleep at different times during the day & don't all conveniently nap at the same time to give the teachers a "break". If you don't want to be "bothered" with caring for these precious infants, then you shouldn't be working with children...Period! This story is beyond unacceptable & heart breaking.😢

Of course the infants slept more than once normally and there were off days when a new baby or toddler came in. My trick was lights down low after lunch and I had a record of lullabies that I played quietly at nap time. Loved each and every one of the babies/toddlers and wouldn't even think about drugging them. This is as you said, heartbreaking. I'm beyond myself that the first woman wasn't even charged.

I’m so proud of my mama she have managed to own her daycare for 20+ years. Her daycare is one of best top ten in the county. There has never been any danger or abuse to the children. She always trains her staff of how to treat and take care of the child the right way. So this right here makes me sick to my stomach, who TF drugs an innocent child. I always love my mama but watching this makes so proud. She has waiting lists of parents wanting to put their kids in her daycare because they have good reviews from previous parents.💙

It should only be given for serious allergies when prescribed by a doctor, and dosing on the box doesn't even exist for kids under 2. Infants should be monitored for apnea while on it. Giving benadryl to your kids to make them sleep is legally considered child abuse. If you don't believe me I can give you credible sources. But don't ever give young kids benadryl like this.

With my first I waited 5 years and my second 2 years. The two year old could talk and he could and would tell me if anything was going on. I did work part time with my first, but I had friends or her dad to watch her. I have also worked in childcare as an infant teacher infant to 2 years old. I loved "my babies" with all my heart, but I could see that there is no way you can give an infant what is needed when you have 8 to care for. The toddlers were still pretty young, but they played well together and were such little angels. We had so much fun. Had special songs to sing and music to play during the day and lullibies played low at nap time. With that said, quality childcare is hard to come by and apparently some people have lost their minds. Don't take any chances.
