Thanks so much for this video. Watching it I finally realized why my mustang is still so nervous around me. I was looking him straight in the eyes and faced him. So today I looked down and turned my body away from him pretty much the entire time and was able to pet him all over and he exhaled and finally lowered his head. Great success! Keep the videos coming!!!

For someone who doesn't know horses, this is an amazing video. Your body language on approach is telling her that you are polite, not threatening. Frequent releases tell her you won't ask too much of her. Returning to her over and over tells her that you are a new presence in her life, so she needs to get used to you. Your calm and steady way of working with her tell her you can be a leader she can trust.

@@thejack9178 A zebra is a wild animal. So is a lion. Mustangs are feral horses of domesticated breeds. That makes a big difference. This horse (and sadly, many others) is already captured by BLM. She is lucky to be with this trainer, as opposed to be rotting in a pen with no hope of adoption. I do NOT agree with BLM policy either, but take your grievance up with them, not with the people who are actually helping horses.

Your patience, taking your time and not rushing her, keeping her confident while also introducing direction combined with her contemplating and complying demeanor is such an amazing pairing. I love how y'all are even starting to get the beginning of "hook and draw" on this first day! That trust and communication is so, so very important to establish from the start. Don't listen to the negative Nancys out there. Keep doing what you do, cause they are right! These mustangs and horses are so lucky to have you, especially since you are some of their first inclinations of humans. In a way it was probably good because she was able to put that distraction aside and focus on you. So, with that in mind, I think she will be a great horse. She stayed focused on you despite those men talking and welding. That was a major teaching/learning experience for her!!👍👏😊

I was interested in the comment about her not having much room in that little enclosure. I wondered about that before you brought it up. I know a little about dog training. A dog on a short leash is likely to be more anxious than the same dog on a leash a few inches longer. Short leashes deprive dogs of options to flee, so they have more of an edge than when they're on a leash that gives them more room to escape.

Food and water are getting even more scarce and horses are destroying the landscape and making it hard for native species to survive. The BLM program is a humane way to control the population and maintain the land for all species (including horses)...but you go ahead and keep your uninformed opinion.

Although it looks like she handled it fairly well, it seems like it would be really distracting and stressful. Would you prefer a slightly larger round pen to that square pen? You made a good choice she's beautiful . I used to have a Dun mare to and I also owned a great great grandson of the famous wimpy he was a stud and he was fantastic and beautiful. He was very gentle 4 stud. I used him for a lot of breeding and pleasure riding I even rode him in our Christmas parades and did a lot of racing with him he was very fast. He was the kind of horse that would rather die than let another horse get in front of him . he was a fantastic horse and I wish I still had him but that's been a long time ago in the late 70s. I started training police dogs for years and retired now but still love horses more than dogs and I was very very good with dogs but never had a chance to learn how to train horses. I wish I could have because the lord gave me a gift 4 animals. Not to brag or anything but I have a fantastic gift and still do it just comes naturally what to do but needed training with someone 2 start me off like I did with dogs. It's a long story but an amazing Story how I went on to train police dogs knowing more than the trainers did. how to train them it was amazing how I knew all these things that just came like common sense. I myself don't even know how I don't know knew all that came natural to me how to train them but I did I just call it a gift from God

Obviously, she knows what she’s doing and she wasn’t using the “stick” as you called it to harass the horse. I was surprised the horse wasn’t spooked by all the noise of the equipment.

Hard to tell just from these clips, she seems to me a headstrong calm. She composes herself quite well despite the stress. Of course, this is just a fraction that we see and she might not be headstrong and composed at all and might be her true colors wont even shine through just yet.

Rebecca Cox hey! This is cool for her to hang in while she still isn’t 100% gentled, but I don’t prefer to work them in this size pen. I like a roundpen, around 40-60’ in diameter to start them in. Once their gentled I’ll work them anywhere and they can live in any size pen/pasture!

I have a quick question: At the beginning around 1:25 , when the guys are talking and they kind of bang on the bars. Is that a part of desensitization before they continued working on the fences or were they not supposed to really do that? I'm not trying to make trouble, i'm just genuinely interested if it was a small desensitization practice?
