I am extremely impressed with this mare. She’s smart and light. Once she decides you are worthy of her respect, I think she’s going to progress in leaps and bounds. She’s already progressing very rapidly. She’s going to be an awesome horse! I would have a hard time letting her go to someone else.

Therese Sandhage I know right? All that work and effort to gain trust of the animal. She forms a strong bond with the horse, as you would with any animal you worked with like this I suppose. I would. It would be so incredibly difficult to watch someone else take her home. 😥 This young lady works miracles. This is the very first video of her I've ever seen. Should be called "the REAL horse whisperer." I definitely plan on watching more now.

Man she's gonna be great once you can get her past that passive aggressive attitude. She's smart but doesnt want to submit. For me, these are the most dangerous because it's deceptive, when they "appear" passive but its the slightess ear pin or head bob that denotes aggression & not fear. You are so right to be careful. Cant wait to see you turn her into a champion mustang. :)

Oooh! I've been getting into these mustang challenges lately and this mare is in my top 3 favorites I have seen. She's absolutely beautiful and so smart, with such a level head. I'm not surprised she's trying it on a bit to see what happens when she challenges you, you can almost tell she was a higher ranked mare in the herd with that confidence. She's going to be something else! I'll be following your progress!

I think your approach with her is beautiful. She is definitely more difficult than some, but she is smart. Patience and persistence will pay off...once you convince her to trust you and you are the leader she is going to make a great horse. I know you have limited resources, but if she isn't fully ready for the makeover challenge, it might be worth it to give her a couple extra months- though you are so good at this she likely will be ready

I am liking that she composes herself well even if she is stressed and she has been like this in all the clips. She is curious too. Headstrong, but personally I like this quality in horses. I still think she's mellow in the way she assesses world around you and deals with stress, but again these are just short clips and we don't know if she's super jumpy and panicky off camera. What I wonder is if she would have reacted better in the beginning to a quiet presence and rewarding her with grass as she brings her head forward, eats from your hand etc. To me it seems in a way that this is a personal challenge to her and she is challenging you because she thinks she has to. But who knows, either way you are doing wonderful :)

The horse isn't forced to do anything, she's just asked to. If she really wanted, she is completely capable of killing Her trainer on the stand. Horses with Good trainers will take their riders as companions, will enjoy working with them and learning, and will spend most of their days with another herd. I only know that the ones that are already in holding need to find homes, and people like Sam are doing their very best to help every mustang they can and give them that chance to find a loving owner, with the skills and training they need. She does it in a very gentle way to keep the horses from becoming a danger to themselves or to others. Sam does not take the mustangs from the wild, rather she just trains the ones that are already captive and out of options, and trains them in the kindest, least resistance fashion. We can’t all stop everything, but we can encourage the people who are are doing their very best to do the right thing for the horses.

@@MadelineHofmeister it's a wild horse they belongs in the wild to put them in captivity and make them do just what humans want them to do all the time the rest of their life is animal abuse. @@thejack9178 There's not enough space in the wild Ole. Just releasing them is way too simple thinking. You know that herds double in size every four years. Even when all the ranchers in those areas would disappear these mustangs eventually would still run out of space. Horses in the wild don't do anything other than eating and breeding. It's not animal abuse to train horses to live and cooperate with humans in return for food and shelter. I wish you would be as concerned about humans as you are with animals. Let's talk about humans living in underground drains in Las Vegas for instance...

@@jackmorgan1677 thats not true the horses wouldn't overpopulate if people stop ranching and just leave nature alone there would be plenty of space and it would also mean the return of predators. And to put wild/feral animals in to captivity and make them do just what humans want them to do is animals abuse. And what do you mean I care about people to but not people who abuse animals. I do think more help and money should be used to give homeless people a home and help them to get a good job so they can make a living.

Wow, I was so surprised by this mare! I wasn't expecting aggressive to be part of her personality, but it makes sense to me now. The mare I sponsor has a very similar personality, she's not afraid of anything, but she can be a little aggressive at times (she's not trying to 'hurt you' just more nippy) I reckon she would've been a lot like this mare when she was first being trained. It's funny though, because my girl does this thing where she'll 'pretend' to be afraid of something so that she can get away with doing something naughty (e.g. pretending to get spooked by a motorcycle so that she was jog all the way home). I wonder if this mare will cotton on to the fact that people will expect her to be scared even when she's not and use it to her advantage. Anyway! Despite her slight aggression I agree with what other people are saying, I think that once she learns to trust she will be amazing, and will make someone great a partner! I know that while my mare will test her riders, once you have her respect she'll do anything for you!

Normally when you horse steps in the lead rope you would back it off and let them sniff it and rub it down there neck just so that they won't be scared next time you go to use the lead rope. Horses when they step on the lead rope it is not a big deal just make sure she doesn't pull the head up fast, then it is possible for her to hurt her self. Just make sure she isn't scared of it then she will have a bigger problem with the lead rope. Make sure you are confident l in what your doing with the lead rope when she steps on it. Never be scared or nervous that makes the horse nervous. 🙂🙂🙂

In my experience the best/easiest way to get a horse used to stepping on a rope is to get them to step on a rope lol. My advice is to get a rope halter and put the horse in a safe place like round pen or arena. Let them walk around with the rope dragging and you stay out of the way, I would recommend monitoring them though. Eventually the horse will learn how to find the release themselves without causing a big fuss. You never want something as simple as stepping on a lead to frighten your horse.

  • @Lee-9

She panics real easily, she throws her head up fast and hard but gets yanked because her foot is standing on her rope, then she backs up or rears or both. Then her foot is off and she’s fine again but I’ve still got images of broken necks and legs in my head lmfo. She does this sometimes when being tried up in new places she’ll pull and rear (since learned to try a quick release knot and to make sure she can pull away (but then again what if she steps on her lead while trotting off??) but she’s never done it while being hand lead. (So with new places I don’t try her up until she feels safe) maybe I’ll see if I get a break away halter somewhere.

Doesn't look at all shut down to me. She's confused and maybe a little nervous and even frustrated... But not shut down. She's actually very calm and composed, thinking through her actions carefully. She'd make a great work horse on a ranch, and for the right owner a wonderful trail rider. She's intelligent enough she'll be bored in many pleasure/pet homes.

Keriel Watson . With shut down I mean not letting go of tension and anxiety. This can be seen while desensitizing. She just shuts it out instead of relaxing. (She’s come a long way though. I don’t see her as shut down anymore. But in this video she is imo.)

Moss 240 I believe (and of course I am not Sam so don’t quote me on this) that it is because of the mare’s previous aggressive behavior. Bending down would be a form of “release” as it takes Sam’s eyes off the horse, and based on what happened in day 2 that could have put Sam in a dangerous situation if the mare had charged her. Just staying on the side of caution, and not giving the mare any opportunities to feel that she has a moment to challenge.

She doesn't seem unhappy- she seems dominant and frightened (like all new mustangs). This horse will make her prove herself before submitting. I mean 4 days in and she is already charging far less than two days ago. The horse is responding, but also looking for a moment of weakness from her trainer. Eventually she will stop looking and trust.

Dumb question, because I really don't know the answer - When these horses are gathered, does the BLM already have knowledge of the individual horses to some degree? Are they tracked from when they are foals, to the point the BLM knows how old they are and something of their background? The reason I'm asking is because this is an older horse and I keep getting the impression she's maybe had some sort of handling by humans at some point in her past and is either stray or was dumped, but she just doesn't act completely feral to me. I thought that from the minute I watched her in the auction video, slowly moseying around the corral, not the least rattled by her situation.

some herds that live near humans (Theres one in Utah that basically lives in the town) or frequently get photographers will be less fearful of humans because they are used to them, and those herds are relativley easy to track because they have hundreds of pictures of them each year. The BLM actually gets help from the photographers to figure out where is the best place to set a trap for round up!

0:25 Was that a friggin' tattoo on that horse's neck?? I hope it was just shaved in, but I don't think that's the case. That should be considered abuse. I don't think these people did it, but whoever did should be bitch slapped. It could be traumatic to the animal, causing unnecessary pain and possible infection. Not an incredibly bad example of animal abuse, it just shouldn't be done.

It's a freezebrand, and they don't feel it. It helps identify the mustang. Many breeds have identification like this- TBs have lip tattoos, standardbreds have freezebrands, some arabians do, warmblood registries do...
