How To Teach Your Horse The ‘Laydown' (Part 1) No Ropes/No Force

Please keep in mind that the "Laydown" is one of those tricks that takes longer to teach. The amount of time it takes for the horse to learn it is a BIG RANGE
Part 1 shows you all the steps basically explained. This will show you what you're exactly looking for.
Part 2 is being recorded to show the laydown start to finish!
Part 3 will cover problems you may run into teaching the laydown.
Remember, this trick may take awhile for your horse to learn, but if you keep working on it 5-10 minutes each day you're horse will get it sooner than later!

I don’t know how you can have any dislikes on this video, they’re clearly uneducated people. I train dogs, and I’m actually looking to try a couple things with my horse. You’ve done everything great, showed the horse all the links in the chain and set them up to win. Fantastic trainer, and with those strategies you could train an mammal

Uneducated? Someone who starts name calling because others don’t agree with something you do has obviously not excelled past high school or you wouldn’t be training dogs. I think making any animal do tricks is unnatural and I did my undergrad at Columbia so I guess I’m uneducated too?

You know, when I was 6 (in 1960) I got my first horse. He was stabled at a riding school outside of the city I lived in (in Denmark). All the horses were standing in stalls, tied in their halters, 24/7 when not being ridden, in other words up to 23 hours a day for some. That was considered normal, and I certainly didn't know any better. He was actually one of the lucky ones, because I got to take him with me for the summer to the country, and he'd spend his days in a grassy field with cows. When I think back on that, I feel ashamed on behalf of all of us. Now I watch people all over the world coming up with paddock paradises and what not, to improve the way their horses live (we can't all have 100 acres in the Mid-West), and I watch more and more young people like you, training horses with sense, sensibility, patience and understanding. It gives me some hope for the future of horses in this world.

You put that so well! Where I grew up we all rode with curb bits as kids( see all the old cowboy movies), very little training was needed for horses to give in to the constant threat of pain. Now people are training their horses with patience and love and riding bridless! That would have been unfathomable back then. So much progress has been made, so many talented younger trainiers willing to share their knowledge, like this young woman.

Absolutely outstanding explanation, this is the best method I have come across by far! Using the horses natural lay down procedure they slowly understand what you ask and without force. Without using force they respect and trust you, (Or continue to rather) other then feel submitted to having to do it. A very good demonstration of pressure and release. Thank you! You must have some horses that would jump into the gates of hell with you; trust level with these techniques.

This is so much nicer then the rope version. I've never liked the idea of tying the horses leg so they get imbalanced and lay down. It doesn't teach them anything and could potentially hurt them if done wrong. I also imagine it could make them panic or feel unconfident. This seems like a much kinder and more beneficial way to teach them to lay down.

I've been trying to stumble my way through something like this method for months now, with very little and very very slow progress. This is really well explained and demonstrated and incredibly helpful - I feel so much more like we can finally get this some day this year (hopefully) because I have so much better of an idea how to coordinate the different components of what to ask for, as well as what to be looking for and how to give the reward and release. I'm so grateful I found this - now hopefully my own clumsy attempts before this won't set us back too far when trying to teach him better!

wow ,i got to say i am continually blown away by mainly horsey girls on youtube that seem to have a spiritual connection with these majestic animals we love ,and get them to do what seems the impossible with an 500k animal that can literally spook for nothing ,in order to do these things they have to completely trust you i been riding all my life and realise how little i know about horses when i see these vids ,but they inspire me to try and learn more .today free lunged first time and it made me see how much my girl knows my voice and trusts me and how my and her behaviour and body language is the way we communicate ,i wish i had someone to teach me more when i am with my horse ,for now youtube will do thanks Sam you arev super cool

VERY well done, Sam. I have a new, very active big mule that I will use your method on as soon as the snow leaves. She is 15.2+ and I am old and short. I will teach her to stretch to be able to get on, but I want her to lay down on her belly for mounting also. It is for safety in the woods in case I get hurt and can't mount her in normal ways. You have provided the solution for me to teach her without hassling her into it. Can't wait 'til spring!

Thanks a lot for this video and the other. You're so young and so clever, so patient ! I'm 63, 35 years riding horse. And don't have the 1/100 of your knowledge.

Haha unfortunately not, I just taught her to bow and then she started laying down from the bow. I want to teach her this way though because then i can start asking her to bow and just keep the bow and then to also just lay down.
