Get a lockbox or even a tote with a good secure lid and keep a variety of clothing items, your harness, ear plugs, etc up there. That way you won’t have to worry about forgetting them…. Made my build a lot nicer, the more stuff I was able to leave up top (WV mountain top) the nicer things got, less forgetting and less moving stuff.

Great idea…… but don’t record/upload where you put it!

Always such a huge relief when you get a lid on building, then weather becomes less of a factor in determining when you can work on it.

everyone get on that Patreon to get this man some big knobby tires for that tractor!!

You can use the loader curl to sorta pull you through difficult sections, slow but has helped me get out of some sticky spots.

Hi Graeme, cut back a heap of saplings and lay them on your track in the difficult parts, the saplings are only competing for light and nutrients and the forest will thrive when not competing so much. Go to Harbor Freight and get a $30 come a long and keep it up there at the cabin for various situations. If you would have had that with you, you could have hooked it to that tree in front of the tractor and manually winched up the tractor a few feet to get it past that mud hole.

Your Canadian spirit is correct. You can handle anything Virginia throws at you!! But for frig skates don't complain about it! T-shirt weather. Always.

Man, lots of respect having to haul all that lumber and then work on a 12/12 roof like this. We both know that the video doesn’t do it justice and that it’s nerve wracking being up there. You’re slowly getting there, one day at a time. Every time I try to project all the steps I still have left, it gets depressing real fast so much better to just focus on making progress and then we’ll inevitably both get our projects done ! @@WoodnessGoodness well, quitting my job and having 3.5 months to focus on the cabin gave me a great boost ! I calculated that all I did in 3 months would have taken me 12+ months on my previous schedule when I used to work just 8 hours a week on the cabin.

NEXT TIME do not drive in the mud tracks already made. Put on side of the wheels in the middle portion of the road and the other side of wheels in the off road side of the brush for traction.

I love your attitude, and your videos. I enjoy seeing your skills progress. It's also nice to see you are taking your safety a little more serious. A couple things about that harness. Suspension trauma is a real thing. If you fall into it, and are suspended you have in and around 10 minutes to get yourself up. If not, the leg straps will start to cutoff your arteries. You can die in the harness. 2. Your anchor point needs to withstand 5000 lbs. Your d ring needs to be in between your shoulder blades, and the chest strap at your nipples. I'm a union ironworker. I I've seen people fall, and I've rescued people. It's not fun. And not something to take lightly. I know this is a a "recreational" build, but this is all true info. I say all this cause I wanna see more videos. Be safe, have some fun, and do your best. We all learn from mistakes. I'll leave with one more tip. I tell all my guys, and especially my apprentices this. have, and know a way out, at all times.

Perhaps attach a winch to a tree above the place where you stated that you often get stuck? Winch the tractor and load out?

My grand father built a cabin in the 1940’s 16’x 16’ with 8 8’ Porch on the front and 8’x8’ kitchen on the back. Still in the family after 80+ years. Amazing he did it all without power tools. But must have been easier without plywood.

they say the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. The same is true for tools in a packout the weight is much greater than the sum of the individual tools, at least that's how it feels when youre hoisting those things in and out of your vehicle. I used to have one of those big three section Dewalt sliding toolboxes and I could not lift it into the car so I switched to packouts where I could just stack them individually and load them on the packout cart. Who needs a gym when you have tools.

I would have recommended, and I know this comes late, but cutting the synthetic paper for the roof BEFORE you are on the roof makes it much easier to manage. If a future adventure brings you to this point again file that idea for if you are working alone then too.

Holy Woodness Ifinallyworeaharnessness baby!!!! Glad to see that you will not die from falling off your roof and the bears eating your Canadian ass lol. You might have a heart attack from carrying all that lumber up hill though. Maybe the trail up to the cabin can be wider and have gravel so you can drive right up with the truck with no issues. You would need to do that when the cabin is finished if you use it as an air bnb. I love all the sounds you make when you’re carrying the plywood in the wind. You are one tough mother lover big G. Everything is looking awesome and keep up the great work.

@WoodnessGoodness I did notice those. It did look like those were limiting you on where you can go. Maybe you could find somewhere right close by to use your bucket and dig into a small hill or something to get some gravel to fill in ruts. Anyway, good luck. I'm sure you'll figure something out.

There's nothing wrong with the way you strapped the first side with 2x4. The problem I see happening now with those little 1x4 blocks is that you're forced to nail them in the middle thus making the block susceptible to splitting down the middle, making your roof attachment weak! Imo the 2x4 is way stronger, Than any 1x4 can be!

My GRK fasteners go all the way into the rafters and so far no splitting. I might predrill the rest. Designing on the fly.
