David Lammy says Donald Trump is 'misunderstood' | LBC

Donald Trump's position on Nato and world security is "often misunderstood", shadow foreign secretary David Lammy has claimed.
It comes as the Labour shadow foreign secretary, Mr Lammy, said his party would work with Mr Trump, should they both get elected in their respective general elections.
LBC's Natasha Devon questions whether this is possible or even correct, or is it just a 'compromise of integrity'.

There is no free speech at a LBC 🤦‍♂️. You removed Sangita for questioning an Israeli representative. Now you have replaced her with a promoter of Israel! It’s clear which side you stand on! Truly despicable! 😔

I think it would be wise to look back at the wide variety of people who have backed Trump or even just worked with Trump. Most of the time it doesn't end well for them. Some of the ones that haven't ended poorly, just haven't ended yet. You never really come out ahead in the end. It costs more than the gains *and* you will almost certainly have to give up an ethical standard you consider important. The worst thing you can do, or at least people feel this way, is to work with Trump and then disagree with him *in any way*. He makes the downsides of even criticizing him so bad that it's rare for anyone to tell him no. Yeah.. don't get in that bed. You don't know who else has been there besides Melania, Stormy, and Lindsay.

I live in Liverpool, which obviously is overwhelmingly Labour dominated, so in the 26 years I've been able to vote none of my votes would have made any difference whether I support Labour or not; I do not call that democracy. That should be your reason to support proportional representation, not whether it will help the party you work for or not. The current system means that politicians only have to please some of the people in a very select portion of the country, and that is why I don't vote; I refuse to give my support to such an unfair system, as to do so would mean I condone the result and the method to attain it.

I usually agree with Femi but I think he’s missed the point here. There is a difference between allowing someone into the party (ie giving them a chance) and throwing them out of the party when they mess up. The new MP hasn’t messed up yet. If they do, they will be thrown out.

The great advantage of proportional representation is to encourage moderation, courtesy and cooperation to achieve goals. That is why most political party's around the world use PR to choose their leaders. Under PR, a voter's second choices matter, so a politician has to appeal not just to core supporters, but also court other people with different views, in order to be acceptable as a second choice. PR would go a long way to cure the divisiveness and anger plaguing society today.
