Carol Vorderman wonders: "Should we get rid of the super rich?" | LBC

The personal wealth of Rishi Sunak and his wife Akshata Murty rose by £122m last year, according to the Sunday Times Rich List. The couple's fortune was estimated at £651m in the latest list, up from £529m in 2023.
This was mainly due to Ms Murty's shares in Infosys, the Indian IT giant co-founded by her father.
It means they are richer than the King, according to the annual list of the UK's most wealthy people. [Source: BBC News]

To me it is an open question as to how you even define jealousy or envy. Do I think they deserve billions? Absolutely not. Do I think the money should be spent elsewhere to improve the lives of other people? Yes, absolutely. Some people might call that envy or jealousy, but to my mind that just reduces those terms to utter meaninglessnes, because technically you could always imagine a scenario where the victims can be said to be jealous or feel envy towards the perpetrators who got away with it. Means absolutely nothing and amounts at best to emotionally manipulative language.

@@CapAnson12345 sadly that just means the employer pays less. People take jobs that will put food on the table and a roof over their heads. They’ll do the same when taxes are lower, so they just get paid less but also pay less taxes.. so in real terms they get no more money, because people in need will accept lower pay as long as it covers the basics. If you get paid 3k today and they grab 1k in taxes you’ll have 2k to cover expenses. If they knocked half the taxes off you’d have 2500 left over.. but you actually just need 2k, so you’ll accept a job that will give you 2k after taxes… only the employers made money in this example. Taxes won’t solve this at all. It’s easy to think that we’re being taxed to death, but the real issue is that it costs X amount of pounds to run the nation. If the workers get paid in peanuts, that does not make the country cheaper to run.. so they need to tax at a higher percentage to get the money needed. This is what happens when we slowly creep back to feudalism… we get rich lords.. we get rich landlords.. rich people get undemocratic power and they manipulate systems to benefit themselves at the cost of everyone. If employees paid substantially more, the gvt could collect all the money it needed to run the nation while taxing people substantially less percentage wise. This is the solution. Ultra rich people serve no purpose, they are a bloodclot in the cardiovascular system of money flow under capitalism, and they must be treated as a bad symptom. Their effects must be limited, and we do that by grabbing their unearned money rather than continue to give them more money and change laws to benefit them. This can only be solved by smacking the proverbial cash pinatas we’ve been stuffing with the meager reward for our hard work. Time to stop being submissive to the rich. It’s pathetic. We owe them nothing. Their wealth builds nothing. It just grows. It does not trickle down below the upper middle class. They are separate currents of money flow.

The Monarchy only exists with the consent of the people. Regular polls are taken and right now the majority support the Monarchy, so it really doesn't matter whether you voted for the King or not. The properties the King owns are not excluded from his wealth. Voderman must know the Palaces are not owned by the King but belong to the State. So I think she's being disingenuous, or otherwise she's too ignorant to be a political journalist. Buckingham Palace for example is partially open to the public, has banquet halls for State events and is a place of work with offices and staff etc. Just like the President of the United States doesn't own the White House but just occupies parts of it.

Then who in the future will create jobs and open companies, one needs capital to start a business and create jobs, governments cannot create jobs unless they draw the capital from borrowing from other countries and the markets or through taxation which become oppressive and crushes entrepreneurial spirit so productivity drops and the wealthy leave . I suggest you watch a few documentaries about the British political and economic scenarios of the 1970s Perhaps a dose of realism and education would help ? I’m certainly by no means rich, But without wealth creators we will be wearing sackcloth and eating sliced white bread each day without butter !!! The low paid should not be paying tax, no one until they earn over £25,000 should be paying tax, what we should be doing is taxing the wealthy middle-class by increasing taxation on them, especially those well paid in the public sector because we certainly do not have world-class services considering the exorbitant amount of taxpayers money supplied to these sectors for those so called “qualified”people to manage those budgets on our behalf 🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️ Take a look at the French economy, same size of population, and yet the healthcare system for example is far superior, with a similar kind of budget applied, and their economy is almost as big as ours ……..

Ever since the term 'cost of living crisis' was first coined, I argued that it shouldn't be called that. 'Cost of living crisis' implies that it's ordinary working public that's to blame for the crisis. Let's call it what it really is... A cost of greed crisis! I'm sure the likes of OPEC loves the Russian/Ukraine war because they could use it as an excuse to profiteer. There was no oil crisis. There was, and still is, plenty of crude oil without Russian oil. However, OPEC saw an opportunity to withhold oil production and raise prices. During covid, almost every big corporation again saw the opportunity to cash in. It's greed, nothing more.

It was Tony Blair, a Labour govt, who wanted to get around 50% of young people into higher education and university places increased considerably. It became unaffordable for everyone to have grants and this resulted in university fees being charged, because after all this was all paid for by the tax payer. This led to universities effectively evolving into businesses and lower standards. University became seen as a right of passage rather than attracting those who wanted to, and were capable of achieving academic success and filling graduates jobs. Those taking graduate jobs normally paid more tax which compensated for there being no university fees and for their grants.

The super rich live in a completely different strata of society. I don't think about them, and I'm not jealous of them, i dont' think I have any conception of their lives so I'd have to put emotional work into being jealous. But I do think is that people getting five+ figure weekly incomes from their investments alone... would still be able to live incredibly lavish lifestyles if that income lost a zero. So it probably could stand to.

Sunak's Father-in-law's company, Infosys has close links to Israel. It did a huge deal in 2023 with BP. Netanyahu granted BP a new gas exploration license off the coast of Gaza/Israel AFTER 7th Oct 2023. One has to wonder whether this influences Rishi regarding the UK foreign policy with Israel. Gaza has a gas field called Gaza Marine and there is oil under the West Bank. Combined its said to be worth over $450bn. Follow the money!

I don't necessarily have an issue with anyone who's successful, the issue is how they gained that wealth, what they do to keep it or increase it and whether they're held to the same standards as the rest of us or not. The problem is, the super rich seemingly have no issue with robbing people under dubious terms, skirting around legality, often just outright breaking laws for their financial gains. Yet they are treated differently because they have friends in high places, can afford the correct help and have a unfairly biased influence over the justice system. I'm always somewhat amused when people blame the poor as a burden on society, I'm sure benifit scams exist and the benifit system is taken advantage of. But, the rich in the blink of an eye, can do 5-6 times the damage to society than a poor person on benifits can do in a year. (To do the math, 300 likely a month when you're on half decent universal credit, if you're lucky. 300 x 12 = 3,600. Keep in mind how many politicians regularly moan about 85k not being enough to live on.) How many rich folk do you know who wouldn't think twice about fiddling their expenses, or shady dealings if it gains them 10k? 50k? 100k? That's the issue, the playing field is nowhere near level and blaming the poor, instead of holding the rich to account is little more than a distraction.

Highest GDP per capita post WW2 was when we had the highest income tax rate and every single time that tax rate came down, GDP fell. As the government had less to invest and companies had less incentive to invest, as investment is pre tax and therefore is a way to keep the money and not pay tax.

I watched a grandmother today who takes care of her three grandchildren almost collapse when her food bill came to £235 I know that poor lady will have gone into her overdraft. I was wishing I could help her but I only had £20. The grandmother was tall and very thin I can’t get her out of my mind. The amount of people suffering hardship in the UK is of the scale. Tax the rich who have prospered of the backs of the poor.

Recently some employees were offered the chance of overtime, except that instead of the traditional time and a half rate, they were to receive just an hour off per hour of the extra time worked thus saving management about seven or eight quid an hour. And, presumably they would get that time back when the management says so!

Sunak benefits from a company that continues to get millions of pounds in government contracts and happened to sign a billion-dollar deal with BP for north sea oil just two months before Sunak unveiled new oil drilling licenses, but yet his wealth is a 'private matter', with 'no conflict of interest', and we should all 'just shut up and go away'. OK the last bit is assumed, but the guy telegraphs his emotions like a toddler.
