Back then he hadn't quite made a name for himself although this was after he did Badwater. Second humble SEAL I ever met. Ahmed R “a weird life before he transformed”? thats a massive, understatement. and its much less weird, than it was just, really really fucked up. i would recommend you go check out his backstory and see what led to him becoming what you see now. and its not about “oh i had this rough life so i became an asshole” its about your decision making. the obstacles he faced were not unique, and his decisions were not the smartest, but his decisions to keep pushing is whats rare in todays society. his story is about overcoming what most people let stop them, with sheer will power. like he says, your obstacle doesnt have to be run 205 miles in a day. maybe its a different challenge. whatever your hurdle is, it can be overcame. thats the takeaway.

I think a guy like Goggins is so introverted and different from other guys is because his childhood home was a hell hole. He came from a background of extreme physical and mental abuse and speaking from experience that can make it extremely difficult to relate to people who didn’t go through such things. That kind of experience gives you such a different outlook on the world and people that it can make you feel like a total outcast and it really does put you at odds with others.

I know in the book it talks about Iraq but for him to be a seal he never talks about war. It's just buds and training your mind. Most navy seals have at least 5 war stories to tell. His talk on how he is excited to go back to week 1, day 1 is amazing. Extremely tough mindset to have. Mostly everyone is clamoring to escape training and here DG took the worst part of training and said "I'll make this my daily routine". If you do that in life, nothing can phase you. I find myself adapting to an easy life style. I think it's natural for the human body to do so. You chase easy. But if your mind can stop your body from doing that and have it do the hard part daily, you have to succeed at anything you do. There's no failing.

Goggins did kinda change my life. He's right. The body does adjust. I was once working like 12 hours a day on a farm carrying heavy shit all day. After about a week of that I was getting worried that I wasn't getting a break to recover. I kept that shit up for like 2.5- 3 weeks without a day off. All of a sudden all my pain just kinda disappeared, even in my joints, and I felt stronger than i ever have. I didn't think the body could do that without a break to recover

yeah it does seem to work that way! I had longstanding lower back pain for a couple of years (got physically lazy, got a sit-down job). The way most people deal with that is to maybe do physio, be careful not to strain themselves, or just take painkillers. The way I cured mine - deadlifts. I deadlift as heavy as I can twice a week. I also do the other powerlifts. It not only stopped the pain, it fixed all of my posture issues! Getting stronger is the cure for pain, not painkillers - all they do is mask the symptoms and don't fix anything. The first few weeks were torture, and caused more pain, but that suddenly went away within a month, zero back pain after that. My lower back was too curved, too soft, too weak before. Now it's rock hard, and is configured exactly how it is supposed to be.

I like that he has the ability to look at himself and realize some of his problems was his own personality. Not blaming himself, not blaming others. Just I'm different and didn't fit in many situations. Things like that show a real mental toughness, not just the physical activities. He could have let himself be bitter. I also like he said hey, at times I could have been a better leader, sometimes they could have been tougher. And that's true, sometimes as a leader you have to act differently than your natural personality to lead people, cause all people are different. It's cool he recognized that.

I have similar experiences, but in a totally different world. I worked as a drayman, which is a guy who is the "second man" on a lorry delivering beer, wine, spirits etc. to licensed establishments like pubs, nightclubs, sports clubs etc. That was a hard, hard physical job. The driver always stays with the vehicle, my job was to carry in the booze on a sack barrow, sometimes even just by hand. Lots of guys complained like hell about some of the places where you had to carry/drag VERY heavy beer kegs and boxes of bottles up multiple flights of stairs, or down ancient winding stairs to old basements. Some drop routes were harder than others, so guys used to argue over who got assigned to the drivers doing the easy routes that day. I always volunteered for the hardest of the hard routes. The other dudes thought I was nuts. But at the end of it all, I was the fittest, strongest, most buff and efficient worker in the whole company. I took a real pounding, but just kept telling myself I'm getting strong and embraced it. I really embraced it and welcomed it. Savage mode all day. Sweating all day. Drivers would ask for me to be assigned to them, not the other way around as with everyone else. I always got it done with a positive, happy attitude while I was hurting and at 150+BPM for most of the day. The upside - any overtime opportunites, or easy one-off gigs doing one drop to far-away places - the manager would give that to me as a reward for all the brutal work I did and never once complaining. The other guys who whined about being assigned certain routes - they rubbed the bosses the wrong way. They did not earn any favour by complaining about the job all the time. I was the only one the bosses respected basically. However - that created a distance between me and the rest of the guys with my rank/job. I didn't get many invites to social stuff outside work - and that was just fine with me. I was only there to do a job, not to socialise. I did that job in beast mode and reaped the rewards that nobody else was getting. I don't regret a second of the hard graft that I did, it made me physically and mentally stronger than everyone else. I was able to save enough money to pay my way back into university, while others complained about the job and drank their wages every week.

This guy is clearly very driven, honest as hell (admits he isn't smart, he's goes to dark messed up places in his mind etc. etc.). And yet so many people get off taking shots at him. Take this at face value! He is showing people that you can be far more driven, push your body and mind to new limits and achieve huge things by getting off your butt. Motivation and drive is so important and Goggins is an exceptional example of this.

Justice9111 quit speaking on shit that you don’t even know anything about. If you read his book, he was the leader of his boat crew in his second hell week and he talks about the his leadership in that role, getting his whole boat crew through hell week and how they never lost a race. Then he was received a perfect score on leadership from his peers in army ranger training. To say he wasn’t a leader or a team guy is flat out bs. Other seals were butt hurt and jealous because Goggins was never satisfied and it’s important to note that not all seals disliked him. Also, in the book, he didn’t have any trouble getting along with his first platoon in the SEALS, because he was with a platoon who constantly was getting after it and were some hard mfs. So, it points out more that the Seals who didn’t like him were to insecure because they Goggins made them feel like pussies. It was nothing that Goggins did intentionally and it shouldn’t reflect on him

I wasnt in the SEALS, but was in the Marines. In the Marines Goggins would be called a "Mo-Tard." In other words, so motivated that he was retarded. This can rub guys the wrong way because someone is trying to one up you constantly. Mo-Tards are also very intense, speak their mind and sometimes can have a "holier-than-thou" self-righteous attitude. Leadership loves it, and I don't blame them, but socially they tend to struggle with relationships and realize how they're being perceived (or simply don't care). Apparently because of his medical issues he was basically made a recruiter for years and never really told his teammates. As a result, they all thought he was chicken shit and never wanted to deploy...but he has deployed though. Supposedly the rumor is that he turned down various assignments due to his medical issues, so the Navy used him as a recruiting tool. Nevertheless, I have a TON of respect for him. Edit: There are two types of Mo Tards: those who are good teammates, have tact and genuinely care about their teammates. These guys are still demanding and hard as fuck. The other kind of Mo Tard can isolate themselves and struggle building relationships. Goggins even acknowledged in his book that treating his fellow SEALS like BUD/S recruits wasn't a good idea. Note: Both types of Mo Tards can be very successful and they can evolve from one type to the other over time.

DonVito591 Then I was a mo-tard in the eyes of Marines like you. There exists other Marines that just considered it being motivated and considered it the norm. In my experience, it was usually the shit bags, less than average, and average Marines that had a problem with the Marines that were smarter, tougher, faster, and stronger. I remember the high speed, low drag Marines getting hated on for striving to be better versions of themselves. Weak asses. Never hate on a man for striving to be better. It also says a lot about the ones “hating”.

@@derek9153 Depends. I'd have to meet you in person first before making a sound judgment. I hope you didn't take my post to be insulting towards Mo Tards, because they are the ones every unit needs. My point was that sometimes Mo Tards struggle with interpersonal skills because they are so intense. You can still be incredibly motivated, but still be a good team member by building camaraderie and having tact. Goggins had a rough childhood (to put it lightly) and that affected him later on. Honestly, as an Officer, I bet some Marines probably perceived me as a Mo Tard, but I just considered myself to be motivated and constantly pushing myself. I have a close friend who's a Mo Tard and pushed me to new limits, but he also clashed with a lot of Marines when he simply didn't have to. It's a thin line between being a Mo Tard and being motivated and also between helping the unit or degrading good order and discipline. In Goggins case, he isolated himself and rubbed others the wrong way. Being a good teammate is a critical skill too -- if you don't have it, then a Marine will just be a highly motivated individual. I agree with you about guys being critics though. They are usually either jealous, lazy or both.

His ability to control his mind is without doubt awe inspiring. His mental fortitude is like steal, but his strength is also his weakness which is why he failed twice to get into Delta Force. His confidence turned to arrogance which in turn became complacency. When this happens you're a liability. Hence why the SAS/SBS selection course is actually the toughest in the world, which is also why D.F has based their selection / training on it. SEAL training is admirable but it is shorter than our own commando training (6mths vs 9ths) and certainly not near the paras. You can be a fit as an Olympic athlete and built like a line-backer, but if your head is not completely in the game, always, you will fail. That aside, his backstory is incredible and the charity work to help families of fallen brothers is commendable.

All he talks about is training and suffering more than the others. He became a recruiter for a reason. He trains special forces and special ops now. He doesnt have to be in the field at all times. Hes more qualified to be in the field probably more than anyone in these comment sections. No Unit Commander would send someone out if they obviously arent going to fight. So theyll use him to recruit and be a teacher. Not everyone in Special Forces is always in Combat. Theres many different jobs a US Ranger can do. His point...he works harder than the guys who go into combat. Hes pushing his life, not risking it. And hes become an icon or idol for those who are in dark places and want to get out. Understand the message, not the actions.

I hated it with a passion, and i quit. And i never went near a pool for 5 years. Got depressed, gained weight, hated everything. Then realized how much of a therapy swimming was for me. Hes right. Its one thing distracting yourself or motivating yourself with music while at the gym, but do your cardio outside or in the pool, dont listen to music, just be alone with your thoughts. It will change your life, your focus will improve, your ability to solve problems, your discipline, your work ethic it will get better.
