Lyrics
It's a God-awful small affair
To the girl with the mousy hair
But her mummy is yelling no
And her daddy has told her to go
But her friend is nowhere to be seen
Now she walks through her sunken dream
To the seat with the clearest view
And she's hooked to the silver screen
But the film is a saddening bore
For she's lived it ten times or more
She could spit in the eyes of fools
As they ask her to focus on
Sailors fighting in the dance hall
Oh man, look at those cavemen go
It's the freakiest show
Take a look at the lawman
Beating up the wrong guy
Oh man, wonder if he'll ever know
He's in the best selling show
Is there life on Mars?
It's on America's tortured brow
That Mickey Mouse has grown up a cow
Now the workers have struck for fame
'Cause Lennon's on sale again
See the mice in their million hordes
From Ibiza to the Norfolk Broads
Rule Britannia is out of bounds
To my mother, my dog, and clowns
But the film is a saddening bore
'Cause I wrote it ten times or more
It's about to be writ again
As I ask you to focus on
Sailors fighting in the dance hall
Oh man, look at those cavemen go
It's the freakiest show
Take a look at the lawman
Beating up the wrong guy
Oh man, wonder if he'll ever know
He's in the best selling show
Is there life on Mars?
About David Bowie:
David Bowie redefined musical genres and the potential of live performance for generations of music lovers. Creating and discarding a variety of personae and restlessly challenging musical boundaries, Bowie released timeless albums including Space Oddity, Hunky Dory, The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust…, Aladdin Sane, Diamond Dogs, Young Americans, Station to Station, "Heroes,” Let's Dance, Heathen, The Next Day and many more. Blackstar, Bowie’s 28th and final studio album, was released on his 69th birthday, January 8, 2016. David Bowie died on January 10, 2016, two days after the release of Blackstar. His body of work, his influence on the worlds of music, art, fashion, film, theatre and beyond, and his legacy of innovation and reinvention will live forever. 2022 kicks off with Bowie at 75, a celebration of his 75th birthday with the Brilliant Adventure box set, the previously unreleased Toy, the 50th anniversary of Ziggy Stardust and a series of special events.

Yeah! You more you learn about this great man he had a fantastic sense of humour! I was so very lucky to see him make a guest appearance at the Albert Hall whilst seeing David Gilmour where he sang Pink Floyd's "Arnold Layne". My late brother, (who was a massive Pink Floyd and Bowie fan) was knocked out and pleased that I saw him live in concert.

I don’t know what it is about how this is mixed, but it’s just...perfectly minimalist. No drums, just piano, strings and the voice of Heaven’s Weirdest Angel.

I like a lot of things abut this new mix : the strings part is finally audible in the amazing details , and so is the virtuosistic piano part. What I don't like is the excessivevolume ov the lower voice, behind the high lead in the first verse. Ok for the drums, but the guitar line between the verses should have been maintaned ! My opinion ? Original is unbeatable !

I have been listening to him since the '70s and you will always "discover" a Bowie song that all of a sudden speaks to you, even though you've heard it "ten times or more" (see what I did there?) Anyway, my point is you may have discovered his music recently, but you will keep doing this for a lifetime. Life on Mars is one of those songs for me. It also happened to me with Sorrow and Absolute Beginners. And I'm sure it will happen again. That's the magic of Bowie.

My best friend Janice Mazzaferro was the biggest Bowie fan I ever have known in my 56 years on this planet. She had the words to this song painted on her wall. She saw Bowie on Broadway in The Elephant Man. I am forever jealous of that. Janice preceded Bowie in leaving this plane by more than 10 years. I'd like to think she has met him & is truly in Heaven. RIP Janice & Bowie.

Came back here after watching the awful 'Stardust' trailer. Not only does Bowie's biopic not look good, but it's also downright disrespectful how the filmmakers ignored both his and his family's wishes not to make his life into a movie! Even worse so, they're not even allowed to use his music. A David Bowie biopic without David Bowie music!? I really wish I was making that up!!!

My sister and I saw the original film clip when we were very little. We fell in love with him and this song. We had never seen anyone so extraordinarily and weirdly beautiful. We did get to see him live. He was incredibly talented. There are no words to describe his magic. Of course as teenagers, we fell in love with the Goblin King. And a man who was said to be just lovely and delightful as a human being. So blessed that we got to live at the same time as him.

He was such a beautiful soul. I wish my parents would have listened to him in 70's. I was a kid then but I felt like I didn't belong on earth and I was the family's black sheep and they let me know it. I wouldn't have felt so alone if I had known there was a man who called himself Ziggy Stardust . Now I am thankful for my childhood, because I grew up with my own thoughts and feelings as a judge of how I see and treat others, not and not the very harmful tenants of the strict religion my parents tried to instill in me. But at least I know Bowie helped other lonely souls out there.

This song has always been one of Bowie's masterpieces -- how incredibly beautiful is he? I fell in love with Bowie as a very young child, watching him in old television clips dressed in long skirts or dresses and beautifully made up. Thank you, David, for helping me to be brave in my own androgynous style as a little girl from Harlem, who wore my dad's fedora hats & vintage men's suits -- a nonconformist who still pushes the envelope. Bowie gave voice to "outsiders" like me -- an artistic, hetero girl who still loves painting outside of the lines... I will always love this incredibly gifted, beautiful spaceman...💖

@@littlemissblackdress7587geesh, don't get your panties in a twist! I was only joking.I loved David's teeth. I think I liked him better like this rather than AFTER he got his teeth fixed! LOL 😆🤣. Either way, he was a beautiful man and a rock genius!

He defined my life in the 70's, 80's, and he still influences me today. I particularly remember wearing out Station To Station and marveling at his amazing vocals. A big part of my teen years that I will never forget.

What I love about not just Bowie, but about so many other great musicians, is that they bring us all together in the end. So many people with stories that somehow tie in to this song or that artist. They all end up here or elsewhere, a digital library, telling their story or a friend's experience. And it leads back to the artist or song in question. Sometimes it's sad. The rest of it is truly a beautiful thing.

Even months later, I'm still hurt. Bowie was definitely a pioneer of music. This video is great. It's also great to hear the song without the drums in the mix. Really good. We Love You Starman...
