I must have spent hundreds of dollars, one 25cent piece at a time, playing this on the jukebox at the local tavern in the day. We listeners accepted David Bowie right from the beginning. We "Boomers' were evolving day by day, year by year along with all music. By "in the day', I mean, in the late '70s early '80s whilst at Rutgers University, New Brunswick, New Jersey.

HarriBest David Bowie was well liked/loved in the U.S.A. My 1st songs I hearing of David Bowie - Space Oddity & Changes. The commit you gave of the 2 funky songs you gave yes were funky but you forgot the nastiest funky song he made was Fame. This song In the U.S. was the 1st song of his considered as funk. This song really got me hook on David music was Fame as a teen it was so original & a head of it's time. The bass & the guitar was so nasty funky now add his voice took it that song to another level. This was my favorite song 1 of many from him & another reason i like Fame cause it was so fun to freestyle roller skate too. Did you know hip hop & djs like me excepted this song all so. That in the 90' David did a remake of Fame with Queen Latifah the queen of hip hop. In hip hop David musics has been sampled 1 that come to mind now was Vanilla Ice - Ice ice baby that sampled Queen/Bowie - Under Pressure in the 90's hit no. 1 on the charts. The song you gave + also add we danced to was Modern Love. Alot of David's music did very well on the U.S. music charts in many genre of music + he had alot of no. 1 hits here. David Bowie in the U.S. is considered a Legend/Icon in music & is in the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame. I liked his last lp. before he passed R.I.P. Now to Loose End I didn't know they did a cover to Golden Years i'll have to check that out. Was this before they came to the U.S. We have much in common with Loose Ends i'm from M.P.L.S. MN. Where the legendary Producers/Song writers Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis is from that made many hits for Loose Ends. Before they were producers/song writers they were in a group called The Time that Prince R.I.P. put the group together he also from M.P.L.S. Have you herd the of group The Time they have many hits you could do a reactions on them also they were in the movie Purple Rain. I'm also a fan of Loose Ends there music i have great memories from there music. From roller skating, Dancing & djed there music. We spun there music at Prince club called Glam Slam. Loose Ends we enjoyed there talent in Mn. I still have there lps. & 12" singles. Could you hook me up with a list of songs that were the hits in the UK before coming to the U.S. & before Jam & Lewis I would like to check out there early music. I like what your UK artists are doing with the funk too. Could also give a list of who to look for that are about to drop new music thank you if you could. Here is something for you if don't know. Last week Jam & Lewis dropped they new lp. It's good. Some of the artists they wrote for in the past are sing on the lp. The strange thing is 1 of the producers/singer they were battling for creating #1 hits of the 80's thru the 90's is on there single??. ( Baby Face) it nice. Wish Loose Ends would make music again & should. The great artist of the pass are making new music. from 2020 to a few mo.s ago. The Spinners just dropped a new single Cliche. Other artist are After 7 - No place like you , Steve Arrington - The joy of love, Kool & The Gang - Pursuit of happiness. This should keep you busy ENJOY.

In the US, Bowie's first album to break the top 20 Was Aladdin Sane at 17 (Ziggy almost made it at 21). Then he was on a role: Diamond Dogs peaked at 5, Young Americans at 9, Station to Station at 3. Let's Dance was the next one to crack the top 10 at 4. So Bowie was very popular in the US during the 70s.

This is what he wanted to get to, they called it "Plastic Soul", which is not meant to be derogatory. He had to "kill" Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders metaphorically, to get here. A genius, RIP. His influence on music can't be underestimated.

Fabulous song with so many memories for me. This is the song that got me hooked on Bowie as a 12 year old. Wonderful x

Sure, Bowie was popular in the US from the early and mid-70s into the mid 80s. He had the #1 song "Fame" and "Lat's Dance" and a favorite of mine was "China Girl" with Stevie Ray Vaughan playing guitar

I remember hearing this song on the AM pop radio back in 1976 when I was still in grade school. The "run for the shadows" line always caught my ear when the song came over the radio in the car. It broke into the top ten in the pop charts. Check out Bowie's appearance on "Soul Train" that year. It's classic. Funky? You betcha! But slightly less so than "Fame", which he released the year before, and slightly more so than "Sound and Vision" which he released the following year. Remember, what came to be called disco was on the rise during those years, so different sure, but not that unusual. Another funky Bowie tune from back then is "1984" released two years before this song.

I was on the Bowie train from Hunky Dory onward. Saw him on his first tour of the States and every tour after, until I moved abroad.

@@Codex7777 I get you were joking. I find it hard to believe Hari would think Let’s Dance was funky. “Secret Life of Arabia” (completely overlooked track on Heroes) has the groove.

Bowie was of course a chameleon. I appreciate the self-reinvention he underwent on the album Let’s Dance more and more every year. Let’s Dance is quite literally a dance track, and it certainly has a funky bass line.

@@sarahjane8146 Bowie disliked being described as a chameleon not least because the species changes colour to blend into the background. Just because the bass has been described as funk rock does not automatically make the song funky. ☺️
