When Beckham signed for real Madrid , Roberto Carlos was asked about free kick duties. He said... "of course Beckham can take a good free kick and will take his share of set pieces. But we have alot of good free kick takers. Me, Zidane, Figo, Raul. We can all contribute." Within a week of arriving at Madrid Beckham took every single freekick and corner, every week. they had seen him score freekicks for united but didnt know just how consistently accurate he was. He was incredible. The spanish were also very surprised about how hard he worked to track back and defend. They assumed the pretty boy celebrity would be a fancy pants player. But obviously not working hard wasnt allowed under Fergie, and Beckham had been drilled to work hard for his right back since he was a boy. All in all Beckham was a glorious player. As a liverpool fan i hated him.

Becks was the best crosser of his generation and an grafter, he never slacked. He was runner up to Rivaldo for the Ballon d'Or in 1999, the people that slag him off are pure haters, anyone that saw him play regularly knows just how good he was. A class act.

There's a reason why his right foot is considered to be the best ever in premier league! As you said his fame kinda overshadowed his football even tho he's obviously not the greatest ever but still a great player with his own style of play Also came in 2nd place for ballon d'or in 1999!!

You're absolutely right about his celebrity status overshadowing his actual talent. He didn't get picked for United, Real Madrid, PSG and English national team for nothing. He was just insanely marketable on top.

Not to mention he was clearly United best player when they won the treble, He was Madrids set piece taker event though they had the likes of Zidan and Carlos. When all the MLS player were on holiday he spent the off season on loan as AC Milan.. No one worked harder than this man.

I think Beckham's celebrity and the talent around him at Manchester United and then Real and Milan just kinda dimmed how good he was people would tend to look at the goal from Zidan and Ronaldo and miss the insane almost impossible pass from Beckham, he was a brilliant team player with some world class attributes, kinda like how Rooney is one of the greats in prem history but was almost outshined by the talent around him even though he was monumental in their success.

I would say Beckham was pretty tidy at dribbling, but nothing that brilliant, but enough for him to use his other tools, such as his ridiculous passing, and also it has to be said, dogged, gritty fighting spirit, he did put a shift in, which maxed his qualities. Great player I agree that with the ball, they work in the same areas (Trent and Beckham) and have a similar approach.

Listen... I use to watch Becks every week.. Consistently he was the best player on the pitch.. The finest passer of the ball England has ever produced... It shouldn't even be debated.. and I think hes 2nd in the all time free kick rankings worldwide.. So if anything this man is underated, not overrated.

It would be nice to see more of his England and Manchester United highlights as it was Manchester United where he had most of his success. This doesn't even scratch the surface of how great a player he was as it cut's out so much of his career.

KDB is more complete in terms of skill set, and I think has more passes in his locker. Specifically on crossing and 50 yard + cross field passes Beckham edges it. Skill wise KDB might be better overall, because he has a better short and mid passing game than Beckham, and I would say slightly better feet in close control too. Regardless both great players, and both phenomenal passers

Becks was just soooo constant though.. Every single game he would play well

The Galatico project was insane, they were a flawed team in that they just wanted superstars, this led to some terrible tactical moves from a team perspective, the summer that becks arrived they'd sold Claude Makelele which unbalanced the team, and because of the media skepticism many of the Real players thought he was there just for the celebrity, there was also a lot of jealously between the younger Spanish players and the Galaticos because they were getting tiny wages compared to these superstars. It took a while before they accepted just how good a player and team member Becks was. They didn't win much because of these issues, but as someone who watched them every single week on TV they were just insanely good to watch because you just didn't have a clue what was gonna happen.

I remember he won the league with them in his last season. Your wrong about how the Madrid fans saw him.. I lived in spain during that time (Malaga). And the Spanish adored him

Dunno about greatest player, but certainly the best crosser I have ever seen from anywhere! One of the best free kick takers ever, and a brilliant long passer, and I am a Liverpool fan so I would not say it , if it did not think it to be true, for the record though the best long passer I have seen was not Beckham, or even Gerrard, it was Alonso, and by some way, But Beckham was a world class passer, no doubts. Underrated first touch as well, he was a machine for someone giving a mid range ball out wide to him, control perfectly one touch and Whip, crazy accurate cross, that not just finds a player, but usually had just the right pace on the ball for an easy finish, filthy crossing!!!! Probably the best performing player in an England shirt in my life time (born early 80's). Rooney might be the other main contender, in terms of in an England shirt, even then I think Beckham was more consistent in terms of his quality of performance in for England. The best England captain in my lifetime...hands down, not even close Gerrard for example was a world class captain at Liverpool, one of the best captains ever could even be a valid question, and of course I love Stevie, but he was never quite the same for England. Beckham , as annoying as it is for me to say was a better England captain than him or anyone else by a country mile.

Agree with everything you said.. I remember when McLaren came in and dropped Becks.. I never understood that, As it was clear Becks was still our best player.. I never forgave McLaren for that. I think Becks was alot more consistent than Alonso, though Alonso was a wonderful passer and long shot artist
