I don't consider Rise of Skywalker to technically be the worst star wars movie, but the pressure on that movie to be good was higher because it wasn't only the conclusion to the sequel trilogy, but theoretically the conclusion to the whole 9 film saga. The movie ended up being a miss, and that was a really unfortunate time for them to miss. More detrimental to the series than say Attack of the Clones. While I won't downplay the failure of episode 9 lets still keep in mind that 4 of the 5 movies released by Disney have been critically well received.

@@zackwalker1721 Yeah, and we know critics are never wrong, even if during the last few years they continuously praise films and shows that audiences hated. Critics, for one, follow fads, there are certain things they think need to be in modern films and shows, and if those are, they blatantly ignore the weaknesses of the projects, most of them are also wannabe creators so they usually prefer a more "artsy" approach, which means that for example something like Johnson being hellbent on deconstructing the franchise and subverting expectations is prone to be reviewed favourably. Sadly, in both cases it doesn't really say anything about the quality of the show or film.

  • @zackwalker1721

@@dieyng Wait so there's certain things that they expect to see in movies, which determines whether or not they like it, and they also just like Rian Johnson's movie because it "subverted expectations". So they only praise movies if it gives them certain things that they expect, and it subverts their expectations, never mind the fact that those are contrary statements? If your attitude is "Their opinion doesn't count because it's not the same as mine" then just say so.

This is an absolute win and is the closest we have to a Kevin Feige for Star Wars. If Kathleen Kennedy was responsible for promoting him, I will take that as a sign of good faith that they are trying to listen to fans feedback and we should not discount that, even though cynicism reigns supreme on these forums.

@Th_Uslss_Indvdl Lucasfilm admitted they didn't have a plan for the sequel trilogy. TFA was fine, the problem was TLJ took what TFA did and threw it in the trash and went in an opposite direction and ROS was just a jumbled mess of crap that tried to fix everything TLJ screwed up. This was an issue of poor planning by Lucasfilm and Kennedy not having any idea how to create a movie. Producing, she is good, but storyline and character development is trash. Original trilogy didn't have a pronounced storine till they decided there would be 2 more made. However, Lucas was there for all 3. There was no Lucas-type figure for the sequel trilogy. There was an outline Lucas wrote, but I guess they knew better. They didn't.

This is very curious. But, why give him such title without the actual authority to go with it. Why not keep him let's say as a consultant of sorts. I think there's more here than meets the eye. So if, with this new title he intervenes in, let's say a current/future project are they to just take his "advice" into consideration? Or will they have to go with what he says? I think, without actually saying it the latter is most likely. But announcing it this way may actually be just the path😮 of least resistance. No? It seems to me there may be some big/more changes at Star wars/Disney coming. At least that's how I see it. And, had it not been for Ashoka, I'd be TOTALLY on board with him taking over.

I think the Star Wars content that has been put out since the Disney era began has really had its moments. Rise of Skywalker being the glaring exception, I'd go so far as to call the Disney era worth while. But they certainly didn't make the most of the opportunity, and if they had the chance to start the whole thing over, there would be room for improvement. So to me, despite liking some stuff that's been made under her watch, there's no excuse for Kennedy to still be around. All other hiring/firing decisions feel moot until she's gone.

I'm not trying to attack him personally; I don't know him from Adam, I'm sure he's a great guy who works really hard. But I also try looking at this from a business perspective. He has been in this company doing this same work for a long time. Arguably his biggest success is Rebels and the Ashoka character. As much as I enjoy Rebels, it's nowhere near as good or as popular as some might think. Ashoka was meh...at the most, with some very serious narrative and character problems. With the current state of Star Wars being what it is, I have to ask, what is he really bringing to the table that will turn things around? I just don't see it.

Cause that is my biggest issue with a lot of Star Wars stuff right now - aside from some just abysmal writing - is that there is too much weird and disjointed stuff. Like the not fake out with the Grand Imposter in Kenobi for anyone who knows the Grand Inquisitor character from Rebels, some of the timeline in Andor seems off, etc.

I’m honestly not excited for this at all. Under Dave Filoni/John Favreau Star Wars has become painfully safe, stale, and superficially simple. Their stories are just so lacking in ambition and creativity, every thing they’ve given us is the most bare bones, watered down, and basic version of that story. This leaves them devoid of substance and meaning, so they rely on fan service, lore dumps, and shoving unnecessary cameos to prop up the weak narratives. As such, Star Wars has become the most insular and self referential franchise in current Hollywood. I mean just compare Timothy Zahn’s Thrawn, who is a brilliant strategist but is also smart enough to avoid most dumb evil villains cliches and gimmicks in order to become an actual imposing threat to the heroes, to Dave Filoni’s Thrawn, who is just another one dimensional bad guy just slightly more competent then your average imperial officer. This is why Andor was just such a breath of fresh air. That show actually had something to say and an experience that aspired to be more than just 30 minutes of comfort food television. Tony Gilroy really provided that Star Wars can be so much more than just Star Wars, while all Dave can do is just repackage Star Wars to people who already want more of the same.

Which even better if someone else is writing the show and he is giving guidance. We need more talent that can still make things cohesive in universe. I think it will allow us to get better writers and directors and not feel like a mess

I agree 100%. Dave‘s version of SW is the Best-of Remake fast food version. No character nor story depth-it‘s the simplest form of mass market nostalgia geared towards the lowest common denominator. They need to put someone with a bolder and fresher voice who doesn‘t just remix the past glory.

I have to ask does Kathleen Kennedy still want this job? I think she's looking for a graceful exit, so she can go off and make the types of movies she wants to make divorced from the Lucas fandom. Hell, if she can make some mid-range movies that are successful after leaving LucasFilm it would easily buff away all of the tarnish her name now bears.
