Dave Allen on the Vagaries of the English Language

Комедия

From Dave's 1990 series on the BBC. I made some movie titles to explain the context.

One of my favourite Dave Allen lines was when he was explaining how misleading statistics could be. He just stated it had been documented that 16% of all road accidents were caused by drunk drivers....therefore 84% were caused by you sober bastards!! The man had a great talent that hasn't been replaced.

Ireland 🇮🇪 is steeped in culture, folklore , tradition , music & song . The older generation were wonderful storytellers with great wit , they could reel you in like a fish ! Dave Allen was a comic I grew up looking at, okay he'd tackle any topic, sometimes his language was colourful but, he always had me in knots laughing. The people who complained obviuosly just couldn't understand the wit that went into his comedy, and obviously never laughed about much in their lives. He is still sadly missed by every one, as there are very few comedians of his calibre around anymore. As Dave himself used to say "Goodbye and may your god go with you. .."

+hjjude I suppose it as the way Dave tackled the topics it was such a typical Irish way of thinking and not everyone understands that. Personally some of it hit the nail on the head - the thing about airplanes has always had me in stitches as my dad was a pilot and always reminds me of him. I am glad I found it Dave Allen online, and it is really entertaining compared to modern ones.

Dave Allen reminds me of an Irish doctor I had. He would cut me up with his side-splitting antics and the way he looked at life.Dr. Williams would prescribe laughter therapy to help the immune system. My doctor says to watch comedies to help boost my immune system. I have never felt so good laughing this much! I really miss Dave's wit and how he made me laugh. I hadn't seen this episode before, but it reminded me: My employers were bought out by a bunch of Americans at the end of the 90's. The new boss held the customary pep talk. He gave us a new business motto: "Can Do, Will Do, Do Do". The room fell apart. He was dumbfounded. No-one ever managed to take him seriously again. If anyone said "Can do...." we were off again. I believe the company went bust a year or so later.

I saw Dave Allen Live at the Bath Theatre Royal back in the early 1980's. The guy went on and on for over 2 hours without a break, just a small glass of whisky on the table next to him. I recall nearly being hospitalised, my sides ached so much afterwards. That was the fastest two hours I have ever lived through. Despite the circumstances, in this video he is still rather restrained compared with what he was like on stage. Still amazingly funny however. I recall seeing this video when it first went out on the BBC.Dave Allen was a real genius. It's so sad that the PC brigade have managed to spoil comedy for everyone. It's an even greater shame that Dave Allen is no longer with us.

Dave Allen was one of the original 'observational' comedians and brilliant with it. A past master of life's little ironies and idiosyncracies. Much of his humour was based on what he saw as the hypocracy of the Catholic church. He simply told it how it was and made us laugh at ourselves. Bravo Dave Allen, bravo.

Saw him once at the Bath Theatre Royal (circa 1981/82). He went on for two whole hours without a break. The stuff he was coming out with made the BBC stuff comparatively tame. It was the only time in my life when I have literally gone home with aching sides after seeing a show. Never before; never since. I don't think I could have taken much more. The funny things he said about pedestrian crossing alone were brilliant. Little, if anything, of his material we had heard already on the Beeb. Unlike other comedians of the day, such as Kelly Monteith whose routine was quite a lot of what we had seen on the telly (no criticism intended).

Great to see Dave is still with us through his many fans. In many of the following comments speculation is raised as to who is even remotely carrying on in his spirit in the field today. My answer might seem ridiculous at first glance--due to the very obvious differences in manner and context, etc--however, the more I think on it, in terms of Dave's spirit, his observational acuity & basic decency, the only possible contender is Data O' Briain. Not the TV/Mock stuff, obviously, but his live act. Two very different comedians separated by 50 years and culture and more, but they're both good eggs who respect their audiences and are sharp as hell. If only Dara would stop whoring for the Beeb, his inner Allen would really shine through.

Apart from his top class material he was such a great comic as he came across as one of your friends. He was never aloof and gave the impression that he was talking to you. Too many comedians are just so into themselves and you know they are telling jokes that have been written for them.

I'm embarrassed to say that I just discovered this genius of a man today after watching vintage interviews of Robin William talking about another English comedian Peter Cook which led me to recommending videos of David Allen. My god this man was funny! Stayed up 3 in the morning watching his videos. Pure genius and sadly left us too early like all the great. BTW, Dave Allen seems to have adapted an American accent in his later years unlike his Irish/British accent earlier in his career. Anyone noticed this as well?

I remember discovering old Dave Allen skits being run late at night on some obscure cable channel. I became an instant fan and watched for several years trying to see them all. He managed to be irreverent about so many issues yet closed with "may your god go with you " . How many today are willing to recognize that this planet has many different faiths? You follow yours and let everyone else follow theirs, wonderful solution but way to many groups try to impose their beliefs on everyone else.
