Das Ugly Stik Balsa RC Aeroplane Build - Pt 3: Building the Wings

Das Ugly Stik, a balsa RC aeroplane build - Building the Wings is the 3rd in a series of videos that take you through the construction of a 60" wingspan radio controlled Das Ugly Stik, designed by Phil Kraft, but with a few modifications along the way! The plans, from RCM Magazine in 1985, were downloaded from OuterZone website. A link to the plans is provided below.

    Again very useful Mark. Can I ask where you got the spruce for the spars and did the shop have the size you needed?

    Hi Ron, thanks for the comment - I got the correct sized spars from a stationary shop in Chiang Mai, northern Thailand. They are not an easy thing to get out there, but there are a few places. Are you in Thailand?

  • @ronwebb3242

    Yes Mark. I am in Hua Hin/Pranburi now after 7 previous years in Chiang Mai and 20 in BKK before that. Here there are not many useful shops for this hobby. Chiang Mai was excellent by comparison. My new project is a vintage Miss America which is challenging for materials!

    Good luck with the Miss America, should be a great plane, and I know what you mean about trying to source good materials. The only thing I can suggest for the spruce is to trawl the Stationary shops. I have in the past got balsa from Mini-RC in BKK, but dont think they do spruce. I only ever found it in the stationary shops, along with 3mm ply and balsa - good luck

    Nice work and very interesting and helpful, as today I started building from the exact plan. Unfortunately, I had to draft dimensions from the laptop as I don't have access to a printer. I see you are adding the dihedral. I've seen models on KZread that don't have dihedral, especially the larger ones. Have you or your watchers any experience or advice on this?

  • @MarkRobinson555

    @MarkRobinson555

    Thanks for the kind comment. The dihedral was an issue I had to consider as well, in the end I stuck with the original plans. The dihedral will give the plane more stability and make it a little easier to fly, so I guess it depends on how you like your planes and your experience flying.

    Hey Mark. The webbing between the spars... That's spruce, right? 1/8" ply? Also...my wing does not fit squarely with the fuse. Can a guy cheat and Mount the wings at an angle? I realize that induces trim issues... How much 'slop' can a guy get away with? I found my wing is a little high on the same side yours is too... so at least I can fix that...

    Hi John, the spars are from 1/4 x 1/2 spruce, and the shear webbing is 2.4 mm balsa. You will need to watch the next video to see how to fit and seat the videos correctly, if at first they don't fit level that is fine, you just need to careful sand the fuselage saddle till it is correct and level. Good luck, sure it will be fine in the end

    Hi, Mark, I've just discovered your channel, some friends and I are designing this 1.8m wingspan plane for a school project. We were researching on how to build the wing, we came across your model planes and we liked this wing, but we are not sure if some modifications are needed to extend it to 1.8m besides adding more ribs. We would really appreciate it if you could give us some advice on that. Greetings, Lucas.

    To go from just over 1.5 to 1.8 is not a huge jump in size, so I would think it would be ok with just some extra ribs as you suggest, and shear webbing, it seems like a really strong wing, BUT! This is not somthing that I have done before, so I am not talking from experience and may not be the best person to ask. I would suggest you get an an opinion from someone else as well. Good luck, let me know how it goes! Oh, one other thought, there are some larger plans for Stiks on OuterZone, have a look and see how these are built and what they did to go bigger, may help in the process.

    @@MarkRobinson555 I really appreciate your respond, I will give a look to these larger planes on OuterZone. Anyway as you said I don't think there would be much of a difference, I will oversize ribs when converting to mm so I believe that would make it. I will let you know how it goes.

    Hi, Mark, a few months ago I wrote this comment and I told you I will let you know how the project goes. Unfortunately, due to the ongoing pandemic, we haven't returned to school yet, so we couldn't build anything physically, but we did finish the 3d model of the whole plane and made a PowerPoint presentation. I uploaded this video to youtube (kzread.info/dash/bejne/o6hoqblplpOWlto.html) showing the videos we rendered for that presentation. We are planning to build the structure (without engine and electronics) maybe next month after school, just to try out if it is strong enough. Anyway, We all would like to thank you, your videos were very useful and we learned quite a few things watching them. Best regards, Lucas.
