Das Ugly Stik Balsa RC Aeroplane Build - Pt 5: Aileron Servos & Hinges

Das Ugly Stik, a balsa RC aeroplane build - Aileron Servos & Hinges is the 5th in a series of videos that take you through the construction of a 60" wingspan radio controlled Das Ugly Stik, designed by Phil Kraft, but with a few modifications along the way! The plans, from RCM Magazine in 1985, were downloaded from OuterZone website. A link to the plans is provided below.

I really like your method for cutting hinges. Using a spacer block results in all the hinges being on exactly the same plane.

Very nicely explained Mark! I have always liked concealed servos in wings but the trick is to have access to the servos after covering (in case servos need to be replaced). Your method solves this challenge. You also explained how to manage the adhesion of the covering around the servo bay by using balsa in key places. I am currently building a glider from plans (with no instructions) and I will use your build method to mount the concealed spoiler servos in the wing near the spar, with full accessibility. I also liked how you explained why you located the servos close to the spar. Detailed explanations are very much appreciated, especially those of us who are new to building from plans alone. I hope you will do many more videos in the future where you build from scratch and explain the full build as you do in this series.

Nice plane and video. Just one advice: In the plan the aileron control horn is put expressly backwards to make differential movement. You need more up travel than down for the adverse yaw. My 2 cents. Bonne continuation

Thanks for the advice, appreciated. The differential movement should be easy enough with the independent servos in the wing. Much prefer it that way, easier to control and adjust

Like the servo mounting design, am going to use the exact same method for the Comper I've just started. The rear of the wing tip looks like it may be difficult to cover because the solid piece tapers down beneath the height of the rib so there will be an undefined air gap, something to check ?

Excellent video Mark! I am from Ecuador and I have been following you for some time. I'm currently building my Ugly Stik, but the Wing came out a little crooked on the trailing edge. Any recommendation to fix it? The problem is only at the trailing edge, the leading edge is fine.

Thanks Pedro, appreciate your kind comment. Regarding the wing and how to straighten it - I have heared people say about applying steam or water and twisting it into shape and holding it in position, BUT, I have never done this so I can really advise. I would suggest you look for guidance on some of the RC groups on FB or other forums. Or maybe a YT video. Hope you get it sorted. If its not too bad it may just be ok with a bit of trim?!

What's the plate made from? On my first build and this is the exact model I'm doing. Stuck on this very topic now. Looks like 1/4" but can't tell if it's ply or something else- imagine it's not balsa. Also thanks for these videos! As a Newby both to the hobby and to building, they are quite helpful. Dreading the wrapping step 😅

@@MarkRobinson555 also, what did you use to glue the pieces you screw the plate into, on the ribs? Was that epoxy? May be more questions. Sorry but I'm all up into this. Having time of life!

Wish there was a message feature on KZread. Just got to point of joining my two wing halves, having a twisting issue that wasn't apparent before gluing in the ribs/spars. Lightly and strategically sanding around the splice angles in the center, no luck so far :[ any advice on how to level out the two halves when joining, or did you build the entire wing as a single assembly?

  • @MarkRobinson555

If you look at my play list there are a few build series, several of which will show how I join the two halves together, this will help a lot I hope.

Thanks for the comment. changing the servo, will be easy, as the plates the servo is mounted on is just held in place in the underside of the wing by small screws.
