Maybe fair about Maddison but then he brings sterling on who has been off for 5 days, long travel and likely didn’t train while gone??? Who hasn’t been in form. That moment to me was when I was like, no it’s time for him to go.

I know Bent is trying to read GS mind about Maddison but for me it's just hypocritical and an insult. If a player isn't fit you don't take him and you give another player a chance. He only took him because of the backlash he received. Sterling hadn't been in the right frame of mind, he had missed games, he flies in and less than 24hrs or so he's featured in a tough game . I don't get it. Becoming friends with media won't win us trophies. Let's get someone serious in there who understands the culture, create a great atmosphere for the players and above all knows how to read and effect a change in games.

Yes well one thing is if these players really are that good why couldnt they create more? Is it 100% down to Southgate? I'm not convinced....surely he can only do so much (yes subs could have been better) but he played the first 11 and formation that was wanted and played Foden and kept Mbappe quiet and they attacked much more than at the Euros for example....against the world champions, so he got alot right surely. The players have to kop some of the criticism I think.

Your analysis of the match misses the main point : England had nine opportunities to score ; they put none in. France had 5 opportunities to score : they put two in. Think it over ! What is involved ? Lack of talent or lack of self-confidence ? E.I : to allow oneself to win ? ......... Both ? There, your manager’s responsibility could indeed be involved. That you should miss the point to this extend is rather worrying. *** One major problem for the French side : how can you give away 3 penalties (2 + 1 that was refused) in a quarter-final of a world cup, what is more, again a major opponent ? Sooner or later, during this tournament, the French side will have to pay the bill

TAA should have been brought on when England had the upper hand and the France defence looked vulnerable. Saka was frightening them on the floor, long balls into the box would be an alternative route to goal. Let's not forget, England didn't score from open play. Maybe a bit too defensive? Losing 2-1 in knock out football you have to take risks. Lose 2-1, 3-1 or 4-1, you lose, you're out.

@@kameff_ Keep Walker on and Trent can play in front of him. England were lacking creativity and his crosses/passes would've most likely spit France's defense open. Not to mention England had a fair few corners and free kicks where Trent is a specialist in those areas. Rashford and Maddison also should've come on around the 60th min. You don't win football trophies by being safe, you have to take high risks especially when you're down.

@@AJ-nd4nk Where would Saka have played? Replace him for Trent? I still can’t get over Southgate taking him off so I don’t think that’s the answer. I completely agree that we have to take risks but at the same time I remember us Vs Germany in 2010. We took huge risks in the second half and lost 4-1, boo’d off the pitch and absolutely torn apart by the fans and media. I’ve been watching tournament football since 1990 and I’ve heard it all before. I don’t think the answers are as simple as what you’ve suggested. Tbh I think it’s a mentality thing, we’re either too scared or not good enough. I think the current squad are good enough, especially on paper but then again I saw our last generation get outclassed by every big nation we came up against in tournament football.

England had chances to score. They opened the defense and had quality shots on target. The french defense struggled. I'm not saying England were robbed, but they created decent chances against a France team against the ropes at times. If you think France was comfortable, I'm sorry, we were watching a different game. If the penalty goes in, momentum is all with England. It's fine margins at that point. France was dangerous even when against the run of play. That's the sign of an elite team. England's exit is disappointing, there's no way around it. But to say they were bad and had an average tournament, that's just not true. They were one of the top 4-5 teams in this tournament in terms of quality. Only 1 team wins. Brazil, Spain, Portugal are also out. That's just how it is.

Eddie Howe is a maybe, but he’s never had the opportunity to work with world class players and isn’t too different from Southgate in that regard.

Over emphasis on rigidity killed England. 1. Play Kane with back to goal and have runners on his either side. That is too predictable. You may as well not mark Kane and just concentrate on Saka as we saw with Rabiot, Tchoumanei and Hernandez. Why not have the other striker, Wilson, for directness. Why wait for setpieces when the big centrebacks come forward to whip crosses in. Playing through Kane limits chances, there is no Son in England squad. Play the ball to wide players, and have crosses whipped in quick for a direct striker. 2. Play big centre backs. Ok they present a threat on setpieces. However, they are slow, you lose the wingbacks natural attacking flair making up for slow centre backs. After all they lost Giroud twice in a minute leading to the second French goal, so what's the fuss about them. There is a Tomori at Milan, there is a White at Arsenal, even Burn at Newcastle. Have components that complement each other not stifle the others' flair. 3. Flat footed midfield. Hender, Bellingham and Rice are too flat footed, you cannot even hold the ball for a minute with them. there is three variants of box to box midfielders (number 8s) in the same squad. Why not bring control. It may not be control holding and stabilising the game, but rather control even when attacking. You cannot get controlled attacking with these three. Look at their respective clubs, there are other forces responsible for attacking, not any of these three. Grealish cannot be trusted with controlled attacking and hasnt been playing, out. But how about Madison as the spearhead of that midfield three, Foden would be number 2 choice over Mount who is more about aggression than technicality. 4. Left wing forward. That, with the current team just had to be Rashford. Have runners across the front line. Foden did well but i believe that was not his best, why, football is a team sport, skills complement each other, the England midfield is not meant for forwards like Foden, he would actually need to better the midfield himself. 5. Goalkeeper. How does one have to play to get Pickford out of the team. Thought Pope at Newcastle was exceptional. 6. Should have been team ................................................................................... Pope ................................................................................ ...............................Walker........................................Tomori...................................................Burn...................... Trent........................................Bellingham............................Henderson.................................................Trippier ..........................Saka................................................Kane................................................Rashford....................... - Change to a front 2 with Maddison behind at any time. - Midfield anchors, sits and maintains discipline. No mazy midfield runs, stay compact. Whip crosses from all across the pitch with Trent, Trippier and Henderson. Bellingham cleans up behind the front 3. - Bellingham and Henderson provide numbers into and around the box when the winger decide to attack You win games by scoring, have a decent chance of creating a decent number of chances for the prolific front line!

Chasing the game, 15 minutes to go why didn’t we go three at the back and bring another forward on, we didn’t have anyone on the pitch from the start who can score from a free kick ie trippier or Maddison, Maddison is on fire this season yet doesn’t get a minute ! And I believe that a centre half who is playing regular for his club has a better chance of getting in front of Giroud ? We always try not to get beat rather than try to win and we need a braver manager who plays a more pro active game,

Subs to late by Southgate. What is the point taking the players to Qatar. All the talent sitting on the bench. Doesn’t matter if they were playing better than France they were still losing the game and heading home. Take a risk and throw on Rashford, Grelish, and Sterling around 70-75 minute mark. Can’t expect players to make an instant impact in such a high magnitude game.

Antoine Griezmann was the best player on the pitch but only because he was a sacrifice because Englands game plan was stop Mbappe no matter what, Griezmann had the freedom of the pitch. Nobody points the finger at the real problem here and that is the FA!!! In 2006 Germany changed there whole system from top to bottom lead by an ex German legend jurgen klinsmann which ended in success in 2014, he brought in little changes like all bundesliga clubs have to train there kids in the same way the National team trains, and so much more, the FA are out of touch of the modern game.

England need to implement a winning mentality, if I compare it to Germany, when they have a family meeting, all their generations have got their own world champions. Current still the 2014ers, their parents 1990, their grandparents 1974 and their great grandparents the 1954ers when they still had their best players in russian pow camps. England on the other side can talk about how they bottled it on penalties in 2022 when it wasn't even a penalty shootout or how they didn't qualify for 94 in the US with their parents and their grandparents how they failed to qualify for 74
