Dark Days of Winter in Finland

Hello, you all beautiful people 💙
Winter is full on. We've had cold and snowy days for this month, and the nights, oh, they are long and dark.
In this video I share our typical days of cold winter here in the North.

Hi I live in Canada, and now am 55. It gives me joy to see that there are still people in Western countries who understand that even though it takes hard work, effort and sacrifice, that there is some younger generations that truly are not held to what is expected as the norm in today's life and how to live. Today's world is getting faster and faster and we are programed in Western society to be lifetime consumers and to be controlled by material things. I have traveled the world, I have seen things I wish I could forget. But I was the happiest in all my life when I realized to take the time and see the beauty in God's creativity and all his creations. To be so lucky to be given the chance and realize and blessed to witness my grandson at the age of 3 see a butterfly for the first time and watch his face and see his reaction, even though I when as a young father was too busy and missed so many first-time things like that, what I see when I watched this video not only reminded me that life is beautiful and better when we take the time to really see the beauty when you can turn off all the world's noise and not only see or feel life but takenthe time to understand and really feel and be connected to life. Thank you for sharing, keep being yourself and do not anything or anyone take or break your spirit of life. Even though I am 55 and my body is weak and my strength is leaving me, I do not need much other than blue skies, the sun, a smile from my wife and a hug from my children and grandchildren, I am happy. ❤

Sanna, I just came across your beautiful channel this evening. Three sets of my grandparents emigrated from Finland to the United States in the late 1890s and my grandfather left Finland at 5 years old, in 1914. He was born in Virrat and still has family in Finland. My mother's side of the family came from up near the Arctic Circle, a town called Pudasjarvi. They settled in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan where the climate, terrain, and vegetation is very similar to Finland. We usually get winter in the middle of November and it lasts until the end of April or beginning of May. The hours of light are short in November, December, and January. It is a time to settle in and do handiwork and work on hobbies. I was close to my grandparents and they lived long lives, so I learned a lot about Finnish customs, foods, and rag rug weaving...I have an old loom. I enjoyed seeing the old tools displayed on your wall...recognized an old kantele as well. I am interested in my Finnish heritage and would like to visit one day. For now, I will have to live vicariously through you and your videos. I love your dogs. Pupa, the old girl, is just like a Sheltie I had years ago. Thank you for sharing your life. I'll be waiting for more of your videos.

My mother’s parents came from Pudasjarvi and Taivalkoski Finland and also settled in the UP of Michigan. Her parents never really spoke much English because there were so many other Finn’s in their community. I was fortunate to travel to Finland with my mother. So wild and free, really felt as if one could touch the hand of God there. Their last nam was Waara which was the name given when they can to USA. It was originally Vaara.

I love this mindset of accepting the darkness of winter and letting yourself live differently than you would during the summer. I work at a horse ranch and sometimes I feel like I have to be just as productive and busy outdoors as during the warmer seasons. Of course, some work has to continue but I like this idea of accepting the change and being productive in different ways. Greetings from Colorado! 😊

What an exquisite scene- as you walked along- your blue eyes, your blue parka and the blues in the shadows of the snow all around you, playing off each other, all in harmony; monochromatic without being monotonous. These momentary glimpses bring me joy and inspiration. As a (sometimes) painter/artist I am very sensitive to colors in this way.

Such a beautiful land! The trees appear so soft and angelic covered with snow and ice. I would need something warm to drink when I came home also. I love to knit, and don’t like the finishing touches of projects either. Several years ago I made it “my rule” to not start something new until I had finished my previous project. It keeps me not dreading so much. Your knitting is lovely.

I started to get to know the north of Europe thanks to Jonna Jinton a long time ago, but this place on earth has begun to fascinate me once again. Everything seems to be on the borderline between the real world and fairy tales. Wading in the snow on a cold winter's day, a small cottage with a smouldering fire, forests that grow green every summer. Surrounding oneself with simplicity and delighting in nature. I feel like dropping everything, packing up and setting off on a journey, even though I know it's no fairytale ;) But I do miss the snow in winter. I don't live in the country where I was born, the winters are mild, gloomy and rainy (which also has it's charm, but you have to look for it well sometimes:)), but I would love to lie down on the snow and listen to the silence. And wear warm socks even all year round :)

My bucket list includes a trip to Finland to the towns where my grandparents were from. My Dad (RIP) was born and raised in a Finnish community on the north shore of Lake Superior. He only spoke Finnish until he went to school, they lived in a way very similar to yours. While they weren't as far north as you, they embraced the winter months. They would have night ski trips, someone would have a tarp, fire, coffee and food set up halfway on the trail then they would ski back home under the aurora. Kiitos for this video!

I used to dislike and put off weaving the ends, but now here is how I handle it: (1) I make the end-weaving a celebration of completing of the item. (2) I've learned that it takes less than 2 minutes and I feel good to have it done, not havging over my head. (3) try not to start a new item until the previous one is completed. (4) I keep yarn needle or crochet hook with my knitting so that equipment is immediately at hand. (5) I have learned to weave ends with a crochet hook, which I enjoy working more than the needle. I appreciate seeing how you made your pile of end-waving a celebration of sorts. That would have been daunting to me, but you are challenging me to rethink my outlook. 😊

Lovely. I’m now living near Death Valley, which is a rather extreme shift from life in the North - Interior Alaska, in my case - where I lived for nearly fifty years. This is my first time to your channel. I’ve recently learned that I’ve got ancient ancestors from Finland, so I decided to look for a vlogging channel there, in order to learn more about that part of the world. Thank you for sharing such a beautiful part of your life. Cheers! 😊

The hand sewn socks and mittens are great! I think it's even more fantastic to see you used a traditional pattern, which is much harder. I love the natural, self sufficient lifestyle, but you guys are really up there in the cold! Good luck this winter. Wishing you all the best.

I'm so glad I found your channel today, Sanna. This was such a relaxing video to watch on a cosy winter's evening :) The socks and mittens you knitted are amazing.. what a beautiful skill and tradition to keep alive. I love that the oven in your house is almost 200 years old and is still doing its job as the heart of the house. The nature looks absolutely incredible there - so beautiful. It's crazy that your lunch freezes in your backpacks! I can't imagine being that cold - people complain when it's -2 here in the UK.. ;) I look forward to seeing more of your videos. Thank you for sharing parts of your life with us all :)

Thanks for the video, enjoyed the music too.😊

Beautiful cinematography, Sanna! And a beautiful way to begin my day in South Central Pennsylvania. It’s Sunday Dec. 10th, 2023, 8am. It’s drizzling, gray, and 40 degrees f. No snow, of course. I’m tapping out this message to you on my iPad while sitting by a fire in my fireplace fueled by propane and made to look “realistic” with low flames curling around ceramic logs. A different (and totally lazy) technology, but similar in feeling and atmosphere and very much enhanced by your lovely video.

Hi Sanna. Very beautiful pure video. Love it how you show and talk about your life. Your livingroom looks soooo cozy, and big! And this fireplace is magic.😊 Your knitting patterns are wonderful. Love also the colours you chose. In my younger days I also knitted these scandinavic patterns with stars and reindeer. Your landscape is magic, like crystals. I send you warm greetings from Lake Maggiore in italy. We have no snow and still sunny but crispy days with mystical fog in the morning at the lake. 🎉❤

I'm really "envious" of those nice socks. My Finnish father absolutely refused to have me with footwear of any kind with ten below trips outside to the sauna when I was a child. Barefoot on the sidewalk leading out to it. It wasn't as bad leaving from the sauna back into the aunties house.

I´m always touched by the beauty of nature and especially of the nordic one, there is something which goes deep down in the heart and I think it forces you to be by yourself, to go into yourself.
