    The title is very misleading. He's not embarrassed of Oingo Boingo, he's embarrassed of a dorky music video he had no control over. Which is totally understandable.

    Typical KZread exploitation. Danny Elfman's Oingo Boingo days aren't the embarassment - the video for "Weird Science" was because he had no involvement in the concept, which was cool for the day, but rather lame by today's standards. Some things don't age well.

    wildman318 I don't think Elfman objected to the movie or the song so much... I just think he was annoyed that he was obligated to be in a video he had no creative control over AND a video he considered stupid. Danny Elfman isn't above looking foolish--he has gleefully made a complete ass of himself in several videos (not to mention while part of the Mystic Knights). When he judges that a video is too stupid for him to be in, he knows what he's talking about😉

    jdw99 "Dead Man's Party" represents an unfortunate phenomenon where a fantastic and unique band becomes forever linked to one of their most mediocre (comparatively) songs. If you hear "Dead Man's Party", and that's the extent of your knowledge of Oingo Boingo's work, it's tremendous... But if you start listening to the REST of their library, you realize that "Dead Man's Party" is hardly a fair example of what this band is capable of: It happened to DEVO with "Whip It", it happened to the B-52's with "Love Shack". Sometimes a band gets lucky and is forever remembered for their actual best work... But too often--especially where more eccentric bands are concerned--the only thing anyone remembers is the song that got the most radio play or charted the highest😔

    This video is notorious among Oingo Boingo fans because it is a complete lie. He shows embarrassment for ONE video (not the song just the video) and they smack the most dishonest title one can imagine. This video should be taken down. It has misled so many people to think that Danny Elfman is embarrassed by Oingo Boingo. So many people repeat this title as fact and it's just not true. (Or if it is he has never said so publicly)

  • @laurenblainebamartistmgt
    @laurenblainebamartistmgt7 жыл бұрын

    He didn't say that he was "embarrassed about his Oingo Boingo Days," he said he was embarrassed about THAT video because it wasn't one that he directed. That means that he LIKED the ones that he directed, hey? Weird Science was the first breakout mainstream song for them (outside of the KROQ fans) so that was a funny time. Some were saying he sold out. Danny Elfman has nothing to be embarrassed about when it comes to his music with the band. Oingo Boingo and he were brilliant, ground-breaking and changed the course of music. I talked with one of the band member's family and she said that they were all accomplished Jazz players that were tired of not making any money so went into New Wave music, as it was called at the time. "Grey Matter" is one of my favs along with "Capitalism".

    Are you kidding? This guy is a musical genius. I have ALL the Boingo albums. This guy knows sound and the art of communicating through sound. He is no dummy. The Boingo albums still sound fantastic, superbly produced and his writing is cynical/reality/commentary of the times. Some topics he hit upon back then would get him cancelled today, but back then it was a social commentary, not social promotion with the punk attitude of the times. It was in your face reality, but with a gloss of high fidelity, heavy guitars, synths, brass, heavy/complicated drums , and bass licks to combine into an incredible sound unique to Oingo Boingo. Like the Police, no one can capture the lightning in the bottle Elfman crafted. 'Pictures of You' rates up there with 'Home by the Sea'' (Genesis) for creepy storytelling.

    Nasty Habits is one of my favorites from Oingo Boingo. I encourage any fan of his compositions for Tim Burton films to listen to it. On another note the song "A Little Piece of Heaven" by Avenged Sevenfold was partially arranged by Steve Bartek who was one of Boingo's bandmates and has helped with some of the scores created by Elfman.

He was talking about how his non-involvement in THIS video led to a work attributed to Oingo and himself, that he cringes at, to this day. The zygote comment was directed at her saying that All videos back then were goofy, including the ones he obviously was proud of. And also...she was, like, 3 when these videos came out.

    obviously songs and whether they are the best is highly subjective. i dont dislike that song but it was probably the most mainstream pop style song boingo ever did. we all have our own opinions. mine is that we close our eyes is no where near their best song. cant really say my favorite because there isnt any boingo song from their studio albums i dislike. but chances are it would be from the 80s. and most likely be the live version. ok my favorite boingo song is the entire 2cd set for boingo alive. or maybe piggies. just to difficult. but as not to step on a fellow boingophile, WE CLOSE OUR EYES was a great song! even when susannah sang it for the buffy soundtrack

    Of course the 'Weird Science' video is a little stupid and you just have to watch it to realise it's someone else's interpretation of Oingo Boingo. Compare Danny's energy in all other Boingo videos to his blank expression in Weird Science. Oingo Boingo was a different beast altogether and why has nobody still asked him to revisit the band's best records- Only A Lad, Nothing To Fear, Good For Your Soul...

    Danny and band should totally go back and reissue all the albums. They are going out of print and with the reissues there could be a 2nd CD with demos, remixes and bsides and a DVD with music videos, TV perfs as well as a live concert from the period. Add to that a booklet with pix and extensive liner notes and not only do you have a cash cow for label and Danny but the legacy of the band will be strengthened across the world and a new generation of fans will be born.

    I don't mind not to remaster the albums, but how about REISSUING the catalog and putting some demos and unreleased songs as bonus tracks? I mean some of those CD versions of the old albums cost a lot of money because they've been out of print for years I think. (Correct me if I'm wrong.) Besides I'm not even sure if the Farewell DVD was ever released as Region 2. Some traders are selling the DVD for 100 dollars. I couldn't even watch it in Europe and I'd have to buy a region 1 DVD player. I'd rather give my money to the band and not to some random merchants who sell Oingo Boingo albums with extremely high price just because they're out of print.

    Because both the song and video were pretty empty headed, and Oingo Boingo were a thinking man's band. Several of their songs, including 'LIttle Girls', told from the perspective of a desperate person ("Cinderella Under Cover", "Wild Sex in the Working Class"). Not to say that Weird Science was a bad song, it just wasn't typical of their style.
