The Story Behind Danny Elfman and Oingo Boing's "Dead Man's Party," a Halloween Classic

Danny Elfman's body of work is vast, genius, and all a bit mad -- much like the man himself. On this special Halloween edition of The Story Behind the Song, Mr. Jack Skellington himself discusses Oingo Boingo's spooky season classic "Dead Man's Party," as well as his work with Tim Burton and the track "Sorry" off his latest solo LP, Big Mess.

From my perspective the lyric "chauffer coming to my door, says there room for maybe just one more" references the ferryman, Charon coming to take your soul across the river Styx and that he always has room for another soul. That leads to "shiny silver dollar on either eye" which is what you need to pay Charon for his service. All of that goes back to, of course, ancient Greek myths about dying and going to the underworld to meet Hades and Persephone.

So absolutely insane that I woke up this morning wishing that I could interview Danny and ask him about the lyrics to this song.

Danny is ha always had a sort of "Whimsy-Goth" asthedic long before the term"Goth" was even a thing. Back in the 80's Oingo Boingo was only playedon collage radio which me made bootleg /diy mix tapes of and passed them around and the rare occasion we had money to buy records in Atlanta it was Wax N Facts in Little Five Points! I have a special place in my heart for Danny Elfman and Oingo Boingo!

That song just sounds inevitable. Like it's always been there and he just found it.

Such an incredible guy. Love him so much. I'd heard the story about Lola asking about the drum machine before but I don't remember where. He's almost 70 and his hair is still so red!

His armpit hair is still red too. That’s how you know he’s not dyeing it. Unless he dyes his armpit hair as well. But gingers generally take longer to go grey especially if they take care of themselves as he does.

Danny Elfman disavows Oingo Boingo like Bill Nelson disavows Be-BopDeluxe. Not how proper pop stars are supposed to act!
