My dad used to whistle and sing this when I was growing up. I sat with him and held him the night he passed. I would so very much like to hear him sing it one more time. The time we have is precious use it wisely

Yes, so many of us learned it from our fathers - As it should be! I remember my dad sang this to me when i was a young boy. I lost my oldest brother, his first born, when I was 12 years old, and I don't recall hearing my dad sing it since then... I am performing it solo this St. Patty's Day, and I'll ask someone to record it so I can send it to him - he is now 94. I hope I don't fuck it up...

Just stunning. My dad and I would sit on the deck in the summer overlooking the water and drink scotch and belt out this song when we were reminiscing about friends and family gone too soon. When he passed and his ashes were spread I sang it alone. I always tear up when I hear it but this rendition made me cry. Tears of grief, happiness at a memory, release from so much stress that the world is in right now from the pandemic, that America is in from D.C., from the hate that holds the country, tears of joy from the pure beauty of their voices. Thank you for this. Tears are needed sometimes, they cleanse the soul. Put everything into perspective. Start a new day with a clean slate.

It is really a heart wrenching story of a father's love for his son. That translates to all cultures. But the thought that a dead father in a grave would be comforted knowing his son has returned and stands on the ground above him... I don't know - that just hits me so hard - I can't help but cry.

Oh, Danny boy, the pipes, the pipes are calling From glen to glen, and down the mountain side. The summer's gone, and all the roses falling, It's you, it's you must go and I must bide. And take ye with my memory ever smiling Untrodden path, I'll tarry by your side And though you leave behind a silver lining It's you, it's you must go and I must bide. But come ye back when summer's in the meadow, Or when the valley's hushed and white with snow, It's I'll be here in sunshine or in shadow, Oh, Danny boy, oh Danny boy, I love you so! But when ye come, and all the flowers are dying, If I am dead, as dead I well may be, You'll come and find the place where I am lying, And kneel and say an Ave there for me. And I shall hear, though soft you tread above me, And all my grave will warmer, sweeter be, For you will bend and tell me that you love me, And I shall sleep in peace until you come to me.

The tune aka music is a traditional piece of music called Londonderry Air, the lyrics were written by Frederic Weatherly in 1913 in Bath, Somerset for his son. People do actually do this of thing, you know to take an old melody and turn it into something new, Simple Minds from Glasgow in 1989 took the melody of Irish folk song "She Moved Through the Fair" and added their lyrics which became Belfast Child, and that became a massive hit!

I was, by chance, in Glendalough, Ireland last week at the Upper Lake where this video was shot. I recognized it instantly. This has always been my favorite cover of this amazing song. Now I even have a deeper connection to it. I don’t know that I’ve heard more beautiful harmonies than this.

I've lived in Ireland all my life and taken this song for granted for so long. I learned it in primary school like every irish child and only recently, as I've gotten older have I started to fully appreciate it's beauty. Daniel (or Danny) is a very proud name in our house, I've grandparents, cousins and a nephew all lucky enough to hold it. It's such a privilege to be Irish when something this beautiful is sung.

@@merlinonline67 The lyrics where written in 1910. In 1912 his sister in law sent him a copy of the sheet music for Londonderry Air. He loved the melody so much that he adapted the words he had written to fit the melody and it was published as a song in 1913. His great grandson say's the song was written for Frederic's father and son who died within 3 months of each other in 1910.

In 2004 I went through a program called "blue to green" for people leaving the other US military branches switching to Army. I had already gone through Army basic training but in order to re-enter I had to go through this program. Occasionally we would have time to take a break and be silly (but in an organized fashion). One of the guys, I don't think I ever knew his name, got up and sang Danny Boy in front of all of the soldiers and cadre. It was very unusual to hear such an old traditional song in the middle of fast-paced modern military training. We all chuckled, but it was nice. I'll never forget it.

Incredible cover. This was one of my grandfather's favorite songs. My grandfather stormed the beaches of Normandy 6/6/1944, fighting across "Fortress Europe" through Belgium and Italy. Story goes they would sing when noise disciplined allowed, and this was one of the songs they would sing often. At the conclusion his funeral in 2002, after VFW gun salute and his casket was being lowered, a bagpiper from the VFW played "Danny Boy." He would have loved this cover.

I buried my father 12 years ago, this song was one of this favorites. He had been a sailor from age 17 back in 1956 all the way up to when he reached the age of 50. He was a very reserved man but the only time i caught him singing was when Danny Boy was playing on the radio. Seeing tears in his eyes i knew it held a very special place in his heart, now i also tear up whenever i hear this very special song. We will see each other again ❤
