I happened to go into a gallery with my brother in Gion because it looked interesting. The thing that saved us from the kind of trauma Raden and that writer had is probably because being gaijin and obvious tourists meant that the gallery attendant wasn't going to approach us.

It's good advice to announce that you're just looking to the gallery staff as early as possible. Galleries can be very diverse, though. Some are very laid back and open to casual visitors, while others are not. For example, there's bar/café type galleries where you can just hang out and just chill. Typically, the more expensive the art, the more up tight it gets. Fortunately, art doesn't need to be expensive to be good.
