DALLAS - Season 14 (1990-91) Clip (The Final Scene)

These are the final moments to "Conundrum", the 23rd (and 357th overall) and final episode from the fourteenth-and final-season that served as the series finale of the 1978-91 CBS drama "Dallas". This aired as a two hour special on Friday, May 3, 1991
After years of double dealing, cheating, wheeling and dealing, John Ross "J.R." Ewing, Jr. (Larry Hagman) has ended up alone. His mother is traveling the world with her second husband Clayton Farlow (Howard Keel). His father has long passed. He has lost Ewing Oil to his arch-nemesis Cliff Barnes (Ken Kercehval). All of his brothers (except Bobby) have left Southfork. Both of his wives (Sue Ellen and Cally) have left him. His sons John Ross (Omri Katz) and James (Sasha Mitchell) have left him as well. The ultimate winner has now become the ultimate loser.
Contemplating suicide, an "angel" named Adam (Joel Grey) shows up and takes J.R. on a journey of what life in Dallas would be like had he never been born. Some people had better lives and some didn't. At the end, J.R. feels that nothing has changed and he is still alone. Adam suggests that J.R. kill himself, but realizes that Adam would not get into Heaven. Adam laughs and explains that he is not from heaven...
J.R. then wakes up and sees Adam again with flashing red eyes in a red suti telling him to kill himself. J.R. put his gun to his head, just as Bobby (Patrick Duffy) returns home from taking his son Christopher to the airport, as he is going to go visit John Ross and Sue Ellen (Linda Gray) in Europe. He hears a gunshot and runs up into J.R.'s room. He is horrified by what he sees....and the show ends. At least until the 1996 reunion movie, "Dallas: J.R. Returns".

I realize the popularity of the show kind of faded in the later years, but Dallas to me will always be an iconic tv show. There wasn't a show on tv like it before it was on tv or after it went off the air. Of course there were other soaps (Knots Landing, etc.), but Dallas was completely over the top. This show was king in it's day. Great memories of Friday nights as a kid, then getting up Saturday morning watching cartoons for four hours. Hard to believe this episode aired 25 years ago yesterday.

The “Conundrum” cliffhanger wasn’t resolved until 1996, with the Dallas made for TV movie reunion, “Dallas: J.R. Returns.” It was revealed in the beginning of the movie that J.R. had not, in fact, shot himself, but he had instead shot the mirror where the spirit “Adam” was appearing to him.

Though Dallas lost me after the dream season I stuck with the series and Tele-movies. What is interesting when I watch these final episodes is my memories sitting with my grandmother watching them as my local TV station stopped screening Dallas. I watched this alone in my room as a 10-year old. It was strange because Dallas was something I'd always watched in the presence of adults. Perhaps that spoke to the decline of the series in the popular consciousness. But the episode was pretty big news--I'd heard about it on the radio before it aired, for example, so I knew the basic plot going in and it was clear that the world still cared about the ending of the show. The episode is really a tour de force, I find it a huge downer on one hand, but it was intense and the cliff-hanger finale was no let-down.

This ended up getting shown on Sunday early afternoons on BBC 1(the last season) in the UK. That's one of the reasons why the ratings were so bad. I only knew about this being the last episode from a newspaper TV listings. Utterly surreal ending. The whole "It's a Wonderful Life" or "Scrooge" homage(which has been done in many other TV and films - "Moonlighting" did it). Dallas never did things the usual way - but this was certainly a grand finale.

I know that at the time the origional series ended, it was claimed that CBS made the decision to cancel the show while this episode was in post-production and they didn't see it coming. However, honestly how would they have explained away this cliff-hanger if the show had returned for another season. And so far, they've only briefly mentioned this even in passing in the new series.

To those who claim Bobby stared downwards Most likely Bobby gazed at the broken mirror shards, then at J.R. with pistol in hand muttering about the Devil and definitely alive. Several years later, cue the reunion movie. P.S. Yes, I figured J.R. shot at the mirror instead of himself.

But if you think about it they had to do it that way to keep the door open for a come back of some sort. God I miss the ole days. With my 40th in a few days. God Larry I miss you RIP.

Supposably when they filmed this, in March 1991, they did NOT know they would be cancelled by CBS, so they didn't know this would be the last show. Also why Victoria Principal refused to take part, because they couldn't guarantee her this was it. in JR Returns in 1996, bobby said how Jr shot his mirror.

A lot of people don't like this episode, but I do. It was a takeoff on "It's a Wonderful Life." Too bad Donna Reed, who played Miss Ellie when Barbara Bel Geddes left for a season, had passed away by the time this first aired. Though the best seasons were the early ones when Jim Davis was alive, the show was highly watchable right to the end. The best way to see this series is on DVD and binge watching it from beginning to end. I bought the entire series and have spent this summer watching it. I only watched it a little bit when it originally aired. I am near the end of the 14th and last season. It was still a lot of fun to watch. I enjoy the in-jokes on this show including the final season. Larry Hagman's "I Dream of Jeannie" costar Barbara Eden appearing in several episodes, one episode showing the name of Leslie Moonves, then head of Lorimar and later CBO of CBS, as having a breakfast appointment with Carter McKay in McKay's appointment book, still made the series a lot of fun.

@@gravyboy3072 My understanding from the documentary I watched was they had shot 5 episodes for the pilot when episode 5 took off gaining popularity they asked for an emergency shoot for more episodes for season 1 because the show was just starting to gain popularity. Mostly this popularity was due to the criticism it was receiving from Hollywood critics and the controversy it created around Dallas (the city) and them not wanting to be portrayed as they thought they were.

It seems those aren't considered part of the Dallas "canon" officially, so in essence they are like the '85 "dream" season. However, as I've mentioned elsewhere, I wouldn't consider them quite as insignificant, as there are elements within them that may be worked into the current plotlines or used in some form. For one, in the '96 movie, it's mentioned that Cliff had a daughter with Afton Cooper, Pamela Rebecca Barnes, whom I suspect may be Rebecca in the new series, and thus Cliff's daughter.
