DALLAS - Season 6 (1982-83) Cliffhanger (J.R. Vs. Ray/Southfork Burns)

These are the final minutes to "Ewing Inferno", the 28th and final episode (131st overall) of the sixth season of the 1978-91 CBS drama "Dallas". The episode originally aired Friday, May 6, 1983.
Another one of John Ross "J.R." Ewing, Jr's (Larry Hagman) crooked deals have come back to haunt him: his half-brother Ray's (Steve Kanaly) cousin Mickey is in the hospital paralyzed due to a drunken car crash caused by a wronged business associate of J.R.'s. Upon the discovery, Ray finds J.R. at Southfork and attacks him, setting off a blaze that engulfs Southfork, trapping J.R., Ray, John Ross (Omri Katz) and a sedated Sue Ellen (Linda Gray) inside.....

Dallas went into syndication in 1984 5 days per week. Unlike the original run of the show, they had a narrator with a fabulous deep voice (Peter Cullen?} narrate what had happened on the previous episode with the Dallas theme in the background. I still remember the season seven episode narration describing what happened here< "The devil got his due. JR's sins had come home (pause) AND NOW." Then the theme song would start. I can't find ANYTHING on the internet about this. Does anyone remember this and know who the voice actor was?

After the famous, who shot J R. cliffhanger in 1980, this is my 2nd favorite cliffhanger of Dallas. Four lives in jeopardy, J. R., Sue Ellen, John Ross, and Ray, and maybe the complete destruction of the South Fork mansion as well. A very hard cliffhanger to top and none of the following cliffhangers, for the rest of the series did top it, in my opinion. Anyone else agree with me? Or disagree?

The Southfork fire ending was a fitting metaphor of the house of Ewing. The family was a raging inferno with Bobby and Pam's marriage on the rocks, Sue Ellen back on the bottle after discovering JR in bed with Holly Harwood, Bobby and JR's contentious fight over Ewing Oil, and Miss Ellie having a nervous breakdown over all of the above. I could see the painting of Jock coming to life and saying, "WHAT IN THE HELL IS GOING ON HERE!".

@donegaveup It's a classic. However, there are some oddities. First, Teresa closes the doors to the dining room, which had never been done before. Secondly, there are lit candles in entry-way & in the living room. Odd in that I don't recall there being lit candles in the house before or since. Why would someone have any type of fire around paint, tupentines & other cleaning items? Fortunately, the fire caused the living room to "expand" as seen in '83-'84 premier episode.

This episode in a way starts off kind of funny , I am sorry I do not know the right thing to say, so please let me explain. Okay, I know fake South Fork home - the inside was badly burned in California, but Bobby is in Parker, Texas seeing the real South Fork on Fire, which is a fake picture of the house being burned. Okay, Bobby drives on the real South Fork drive way, by the time his car arrives on to the house ,Bobby is back on the fake South Fork set in California. I l would like to know how actors and production crew put the pieces together when they are in Texas and when they are in California. Amazing.

Sue Ellen said after the fire and while they were repairing the house, she had her own bedroom built. How was that possible? In order to build another bedroom, the whole half of that side of the hallway would’ve had to have been torn down and reconstructed. Not only that, Southfork didn’t have any guest rooms available that she could’ve turned into a bedroom? Secondly: Miss Ellie didn’t seem phased one bit by the fire happening, as much as she adores Southfork, especially given the fact that she lost a lot of clothing due to the fire. I mean…I know they’re wealthy so her replacing her clothing wasn’t a big deal. But just the fact that a huge fire tore through her beloved Southfork just seemed odd to me.

There should have been another Dallas-Knots Landing crossover episode, except this would have been the season finale for both shows and in this season finale, both Sue Ellen and Gary Ewing get rip-roaring drunk and go on a drunken crime spree together. Now, J.R., Bobby, Abby and Valene need to join forces to bring the crime spree to an end and get Sue Ellen and Gary into an AA meeting. At the end of the crime spree, Gary and Sue Ellen agree to go to AA, but they are both still so drunk that they accidentally enroll themselves in an AAA meeting. Oh the horror! Oh the boredom! LOL
