DALLAS 2012 Clip (Cliff Barnes Is Framed And Arrested For J.R.'s Murder)

This is a clip from "Legacies", the 15th episode and second season finale of TNT's 2012 revival of the CBS 1978-91 landmark drama "Dallas". This episode aired on April 15, 2013.
Under the guise of having a vacation in Mexico, Cliff Barnes (Ken Kercheval) and his daughter Pamela Rebecca Barnes Ewing (Julie Gonzalo) settle into their hotel room. Realizing that something is up when Christopher (Jesse Metcalfe), John Ross (Josh Henderson), Sue Ellen (Linda Gray), and Bobby Ewing (Patrick Duffy) shows up in the room, Cliff demands to know what is going on.
Bobby reveals that he has been waiting for this moment for a long time: the end of the Barnes/Ewing feud. Christopher steps up and reveals that he went to Zurich and found out the truth about his mother, the original Pamela Barnes Ewing: she died from cancer in 1989. He also reveals that he learned the truth that Cliff had paid off the doctor she was living with to not tell the Ewings that Pam had died, so Cliff would have sole ownership of Barnes Global (the original Barnes-Wentworth Oil Co.). Chris then reveals that he now owns his mother's share in the company, along with John Ross and Pamela, who tells Cliff that she is now married to John Ross (Cliff's worst nightmare), making Cliff the minority shareholder in his own company.
Pamela then reveals that she conspired with the Ewings upon finding out the truth that Cliff had sabotaged Chris' methane oil rig, which caused an explosion that killed her twin babies. The police then enter the hotel room to arrest Cliff Barnes for the murder of J.R. Ewing (The Ewings and Bum, per J.R.'s letter to Bobby, set up Cliff and his partner Harris Ryland for the conspiracy). Cliff is taken away by the police, all the while maintaining his innocence that he did not kill J.R.

JR was dying from terminal cancer and had only days to live. His right hand man, Bum Jones, stole Cliff’s pistol and shot JR with it on JR’s orders as an “assisted suicide” of sorts. And now with Ken passed on, how did this end? Did Cliff stay in jail? What would have happened in season 4? They just sort of left him in prison and ended the season with Nicolas getting that big goon to off the Cartel while dealing with his wound from being shot by Elana, Elana finding out she was pregnant, Christopher’s car blowing up and John Ross finding out he has a sister. Yet nothing on Cliff. No hint that maybe he might have a source or something to get him out of jail. Are we to guess he never got out and died there? Ken passed about 4 years later.

JR Ewing knew that one day he would close this Barnes-Ewing feud once and for all. Christopher, Bobby's son, got his shares that his mom left him in a will. John Ross Ewing III married Pamela Rebecca Barnes and she inherited the shares that her aunt Katherine Wentworth left to her. How clever was Sue Ellen to inform Cliff Barnes that he is under arrest.

I never actually watched more than two episodes of this "new" version -- and am seeing this clip for the first time now, after having read about it online... I never watched this later series. So, Cliff changed from being the perfect dupe to a really bad guy? Never would have guessed they would change his character that much.

The new Dallas was a very good show, but I personally didn't like the way it's plot ignored the events that occurred in the two Dallas movies. ... I wish the new Dallas would have started off with J.R. in charge of West Star Oil and Bobby in charge of Ewing Oil and South Fork. ... J.R. then could have tried to get Ewing Oil and South Fork from Bobby.

Michael Zoran I agree, it really was great. It's something how Larry Hagman passed away during the show's run. Sure wish it would have lasted longer because it was never really over the top, but what's "Dallas" without JR Ewing?

The thing is, the franchise just can't continue without JR Ewing. They should have started the show a few years earlier, so that we could have had more years of Larry Hagman as JR.

Dallas TNT really butchered the character of Cliff Barnes. It was lazy writing by the writers. In the original Dallas, Cliff was never evil. In fact, his feud with the Ewings, with the exception of JR, was basically over by the end of the original series. Bobby and Cliff were also close by the end. Certain things in Cliff’s past as stated in Dallas TNT actually never happened in original Dallas. This was a major flaw in the new show and totally out of character for Cliff.

Cliff would not have had the rig destroyed with his daughter on it. All Cliff ever wanted was a loyal family. Cliff was never evil. JR was evil, and, I hate to say it, but so was Katherine, but, not Cliff

I didn't love that the writers took Cliff down such a dark path in this timeline, but it was kind of cool that JR was now the lesser of two evils. I'd almost forgotten Cliff's daughter was such a hottie. That was the saddest part of this reboot only lasting 3 seasons lol.
