Everything can be cultivated, even thorns.
The most beautiful line from the third book, that best summarizes him as a character has to be "You cannot have my pain" as it shows Dalinar accept what he was, no longer avoiding his past, but using his failures as the lessons that made him a better person.
Picking a favorite character between Dalinar and Kaladin is *extremely* difficult.

Feel the need to clarify, when I said Dalinar does not change much during the books, I was referring to current times. He develops a WHOLE LOT in the flash backs. I feel I poorly worded that in hindsight.
I loved the tidbit about Dalinar wanting to be more like Kaladan, and now that it’s brought to my attention I think it’s true. It’s easy to forget that only us and Shallan really know what Kaladin had to go through to become the man he is. I’m sure Adolin, Dalinar, and the others assume that Kaladin was broken by Amaram, not realizing that it’s a build up of everything he before and after that moment. Amaram is just know to them all because he’s one of the few people Kaladin blames besides himself. Sanderson is a genius.
One of the most invluential moments of Dalinars life is the death of his brother. It made him seek out the Nightwatcher and also let to him trying to understand the Way of Kings. I think thats why the transition from broken to present Dalinar works. He was still disapointed in himself for not helping Gavilar, but not so broken that he could not function.
Dalinar is one of the greatest characters ever written and his story isn't even over yet

I think Adolin has some kind of inferiority complex from his childhood because of how much he wants to prove himself to his father.

Wow, you were right
Brandon Sanderson does incredibly well with mental illness in his characters. It is all more then believable and also very relatable. Kaladin deals with so much loss in his life, and guilt that he failed those he loves leading to his constant depression. Shallan seems to have overcome her initial anxiety but has very deep down hidden depression and also in book 3 has a HUGE problem that is not at all resolved with multiple personality disorder. Renarin very clearly has mega anxiety, Adolin seems pretty perfect except what you mentioned with anger problems but it only seems to come up very rarely, and Dalinar has ptsd but has gotten much better and has found a healthy way to deal with it in talking with Nevanni/Jasnah and writing his book "Oathbringer"
Thank you for this analysis Daniel - love your stuff! Another thing I thought Sanderson did a masterful job at was contrasting Dalinar against Gavilar and even Sadeas in the flash backs - showcasing how the latter two were able to evolve from their initial warmonging ways (albeit to become ruthless politicians) whereas Dalinar stay consumed by the Thirst. It brilliantly showed how much deeper Dalinar's problem then just Alethi culture and Thirst addiction. And that's what makes the end of Oathbringer work so well in my opinion.
I personally think the good/honorable Dalinar was alway inside him. He is shown to be under heavy influence of both Odium and Thrill yet still spares the kid. He stops himself from murdering his brother and is always against sadeas ruthless actions. Not only that but he seems to care about his personal guard and respects his opponents and even trusts them. After his wife death and the incident with renarin he tries to limit his drinking and becomes a better man by himself. But when he sees that his skills are needed once again he decides he needs to seek help. Renarin and adolin are not super damaged because at least for a year or two dalinar tries to be a better father and once his memory is erased he devotes himself to loving his family. (Even strikes a bond with jasnah during the time he tries to better himself)
I like a good redemption arc, hence why Dalinar is my favourite.
Huh... didn't realize the third book was out. Better go find it then
Of the main characters in The Stormlight Archive, Dalinar is easily the most interesting one.

The lopen is the best. He ignores your ignorant beliefs.
Just caught up with book 4, and can finally watch these. Blast from the past, 5yrs and the channel is so different.
I know this was 4 years ago, but I'd like you to know you're an inspiration. When Iw ach you on the screen, I know you're being youself. You're honest, and willing to stand up for people's beleifs, regardless of your own. You're also able to stand against toxic opinions, regardless of their ppularity. I respect you, and am glad you do what you do.
Dalinar is either my first or second favorite character of all time, Kaladin being the other of the two. This channel introduced me to The Stormlight Archive and it has become my favorite books series, so thank you Daniel.
I love your criteria for examining a character, particularly the way you choose the first 2 characters based on their opposing traits!
I want to thank you for these three videos on each of the main characters. I have always read books with just one main character or maybe two and then the rest of the characters in the background. In YA fantasy they always have one main character. so the fact that you broke these up into three videos was great. I was having a very hard time with the first book and understanding each character. I was overwhelmed believe it or not trying to separate each of them etc. anyhow, I am on book 2 and it makes so much more sense. I am halfway through book two and can't wait to get to book 3. I hope I made sense in this.
I don't know that Dalinar wants to be "more like Kaladin" however I do believe that he sees an aspect of honor (maybe even Honor/Tanavast) within Kaladin that speaks to him on a spiritual level and that he greatly respects and aspires to. The difference being that he's not trying to emulate Kal directly but is seeking out or attracted to the aspect of selflessness that drives Kal.
You're right about Brandon taking specific actions to make his characters struggle with mental issues. The magic system of the surges demands the knights be mentally broken so spren could seep in between the cracks and form nahel bond. When Kal argues with Syl that he is no knight radiant (i think in Words of Radiance) just a broken man, she tells him that all of the radiants were broken men.

Itay Amit I would agree but what about Jasnah or renarin. They don’t seem to have gone through anything close to what the other radiants have. I think the kholin bloodline has something about it that ties into a lot of them having bonds. Idk tho

Gino Ciambriello **spoiler alert for oathbringer** there are hints that jasnah was treated by her family as a lunatic and have been hurt deeply by them. About renarin we will just have to wait and see but jasnah is very empathetic toward him and implies he was treated the same. **Spoiler alert**

hi, i am 5 years late to the party, but i just wanted to point out at this point that, the lopen is not broken, he is pretty content with his life. :) jk jk, but i think there could be some exceptions here and there haha. ain't going against my mans.
Realize this video is 3 years old and its unlikely you'll read this, but did you miss the Parralel between Dalinar and Teft? Both addicts who feel unsuited for their roles but are there only ones available to do what must be done. Teft never got a reprieve and escape from his past. And he also idolizes Kaladin on discovering the boy. So those two work in Tandem where Dalinar trusts the Honor Blade with the Bridgemen and Teft is the cause of its loss.
Hey man! Good job with the videos covering The Stormlight Archive. I hope to see more in the near future, and keep up the good work. :))
In my opinion, Shallan is suffering from Dissociative Identity Disorder or DID. Only it is enhanced and intensified by her ability to light weave.
Great and interesting examination, I am looking forward to the next ones.
I imagine him as Gerard Butler in my mind as I read. You should do a 'Casting' list of wich actor/persons you think look like the characters on any book series.

Why hadn't I discovered your channel earlier? Such an amazing work you're doing here
Yup!! Hit the nail on the head. Each character embodies a different part of human emotion and deals with hardships which gives them their strength and makes them ultimately more realistic imo and believable.
I fucking love stormlight archive
I imagine Dalinar has the voice of Patrick Stewart. Experienced, wise and you feel just as broken when he breaks down when he has his moment of weakness. Plus I can imagine the desperation when he has his visions, just put the pleas and ideas from the episode ‘The inner light’ and you can imagine dalinar giving the same tone of frighten desperation for rational answers.
Question for your Q&A: what are some fantasy cliches that you could do without?
Question for you to hopefully answer in your Q&A: How do you feel about themes and lessons in the books you read? Do you learn from them and try to apply them in your own life, do you just kinda enjoy them, or are you in different to them? I'm reading The Way of Kings right now, almost finished it, and I've so far gleamed a lot of really great lessons from it, particularly from Kaladin and Dalinar. I think it really helps me grow to love and identify with a character when I can learn how their story applies to my own life, and have realized that it's sort of one of the reasons I enjoy reading. I feel like the characters teach me a lot through either their struggles or their values and am wondering if you feel the same.
dude how old are you? i'm 17 and i have read a lot of books almost all my life as literate person but i could never summarize a character in a way like that. really it was almost perfect (in my opinion you should have talked more about dalinar in the third book -one of the reasons its my favorite is because the change inside dalinar there). i wish you good luck

Love your channel
I think Shallan struggles with more than just anxiety. If you go down the rabbit hole that is 17th Shard forum you'll find a lot of in depth analysis of her problems. I don't agree with all of them, but I think she has some severe mental health issues. I really look forward to the next character examinations, this one was great !

In book three she struggles with multiple personalities. Having Shallan talk with Veil and Radient as if they are truly different people, not just inside her head was interesting. She wants to be Veil or Radient, not the broken and messed up Shallan. Veil and Radient, are in her eyes, perfect because the are whole.
On the thing that all the characteres are somehow "damaged": in the Cosmere, Investiture (~mana) is available mostly to people who have their Spiritwebs (~souls) kinda cracked, like having great traumas in the past and suffering from mental issues. Also, you can see something similat with Snapping in Mistborn: Kelsier could become a Mistborn only after his wife had been beaten to death in the Pits of Hathsin. For the Q&A: 1.) How would you name your sword if you had one? 2.) Which is the most important book you ever read, like one that changed your life or one that helped you through a bad period of your life? Thank you for your videos, you are great :)
If I remember there was a big thread spawned on 17th shard about how being a Radiant and having mental illness were interlinked in some way. Might have been based on something Brandon said, but I don't remember. It was a while ago.
Love your content man! Kaladin is a little bit of a better of a character but Dalinar during Oathbringer definitely was the most interesting. Just wondering will you do a character examination for Matt from Wheel of Time?
My 3 favorite characters in order are Syl Pattern then Jasnah

Lift is really good too though. Almost closer her over Jasnah
You should do one on Vin from mistborn! I think that would be a really cool to see what you think about her change from slave to queen.
I had never really considered that Dalinar is trying to be like Kalidin. That is a very intersting idea. Also question for you Q&A. What do you think of "Fantasy tropes" Do you like them in books? Do you prefer books that don't contain them? Do you think they are necessary to books?
The King's Wit!!!
I like the fact that there are no dislikes for this video 😃👍
I realised I cannot watch this video because I haven't read book three. I live under a rock and hadn't realised it was out.
Reminds me of Logan Nine-Fingers from the First Law series, would recommend checking it out, he's probably the best character I've come across in fantasy along with other stand out characters, Nicomo Cosca anyone?
Hi it’s Ella Adam from uk 🇬🇧 great video!! Whose ur favourite character in the series the way of king
What are your 3 favorite non-fantasy/scifi books?
This might be the wrong video to ask this question, but I was wondering if you would be interested in doing a video examining Stormlight Archive as a form of historical /social commentary.
Baby Daniel.
I have a question, which can simply be answered in the comments. Do you think these "Character Review" video's are better for those who have read the books, or those who haven't?

No it's totally fine with me, I've read Wheel Of Time and most of what Brandon Sanderson wrote as well. It was more of a question asking if you thought they were still OK for people who have yet to read the books. But it would go without question that a character analysis can't be done without spoilers.

Daniel Greene I know it’s a little late now but I would definitely mark them with spoiler warnings because I’ve only read The Way of Kings and I started watching this last week and realized like a dumbass that I was getting spoiled like a minute in. So for idiots like me who carelessly click in and then find themselves getting spoiled, I’d put it in the title or something :)

i think you're a bit too hard on young Dalinar. He enjoys killing but not for the fact that he killed someone, more for the sport of it. the competition. he cannot replicate that level of competition excitement when the war is over. You see the same thing with professional athletes who retire. They don't know what to do with themselves because everything they had worked on to be the best at their entire lives is suddenly taken from them. But Dalinar DOES grow, even then. that's when he becomes Dalinar the General. a newer challenge, which he focuses on and excells at, although it does obviously not contain as much excitement as the fight itself. I also think it's too hard to imply that Dalinar doesnt care. He doesn't care about those he doesnt know. for example, other soldiers, or even women and children of those opposing him. But he always cared about his brother, and his men. he was always popular among his men, even when they realized he went too far. he wasn't selfish per se. even before his revelation, he vowed to never challenge Gavilar for the throne. The problem with Evi was very specifically that she introduced to him, for the first time, the concept that his killings might be wrong. and the worst part about evi, is that he knows she's right. that's why he's a bad husband and father. it's not that he doesnt care, the problem is that he DOES care and he doesnt WANT to. When Evi dies, (someone who he knew personally, and knew was a good and innocent person) by his hand, that's what drives her point into him in a way he can no longer ignore. Dalinar is my favorite character, which is why i'm so upset that you misrepresented this part of his past. He was never a Hitler type figure. he was more like Napoleon. and thats important because Hitler can never become good i think. or, even if he did, it wouldnt matter. Napoleon was never EVIL. he was just wrong. there is a big difference i think.

Spoilers for Book 3 but...Dalinar's wife had to be the tritest garbage Brandon Sanderson has ever wrote. "Oh No! I must warn the people who just tried to kill my husband that my husband is going to kill them!" WTF girl! I currently doing a reread before book 4, and god...I'm not looking forward to revisiting this melodramatic shlock.
