    I find it fascinating they ways that the three main characters use different coping methods to deal with their depression. It makes sense that Dalinar and Shallan would try to forget their pasts, since their depressions comes from remembering painful events and them doing things they which they hadn’t. Kaladin is different. Yes he has painful memories, but he hasn’t really done anything awful the way the others have, it’s more about injustice done to him and failure. Also, he’s always been depressed. Kaladin’s coping method seems a lot more healthy (even if it’s less effective) then Shallan and Dalinar’s forgetting methods, since they basically shut down when they remember.

    I think this was my favourite book so far. One of the things i love the most in this series is how well sanderson builds up tension to the climax. The battle at the end of the book is so well written and i read the last quarter of the book in a day because i just couldnt know what happens. And boy was i not disappointed. This man is a genius storyteller and you truly never know what will happen. He doesnt rely on shock value bc the shock comes so naturally with the story and youre left thinking "well of course that happened how could it not when you think about it?" Kind of wish i didnt discover this series until it was finished bc im gonna die of suspense waiting for the next installments.

    Love your thoughts! I agree with most of your points! (Spoilers ahead!) Dalinar's journey was masterful and I would actually disagree with your point about him staying the same in the present, because he actually goes through some big changes when his memory returns; he regresses into the PTSD and struggles with keeping his role as leader because he feels unworthy. Yes, he eventually ended up in roughly the same place as before, but it was a HUGE moment of growth for him to remember his past and learn to STILL be the man that he needed to be without crippling shame. He ends up being a different man than the one with holes in his past. Also, Kaladin is the LEAST superman in this one, because a big part of the later chapters is him learning that sometimes he can't be the one to save the day, and sometimes he must be rescued. He has major struggles from seizing up in battle and being unable to save his friends on opposing sides, and I actually wish Sanderson would have shown us more of what was going on in his head after that. (Although seeing how Adolin looks after him at that time was beautiful) And for worldbuilding, can we talk about how much we learned about the spren and shadesmar in this one? :)

    Warbreaker/Legion was my first Brandon Sanderson books. Immediately became a fan. Devoured first 2 way of kings books and then mistborn books. Can't wait for second warbreaker book. He's a master at magic systems. So unique in every different world. Warbreaker was colors, Mistborn metals, Way Of Kings Oaths/Spren/Shards/Heralds/Radiants etc... If you haven't read the short story Legion and it's second book I HIGHLY recommend as well. Then if you want a long series that Brandon Sanderson helped finish is the Wheel of Time series by Robert Jordan/Brandon Sanderson. Urban fantasy absolutely must recommend Dresden Files.

    7:15 "Brandon Sanderson could become someone that is universally liked across the genre, who everyone just loves" last chapter in oathbringer: "the only way to create somthing (art) that nobody hates is to make sure it can't be loved either..." "...“Nobody will like everything, everybody dislikes something, someone loves that thing you hate-but at least being hated is better than nothing. To risk metaphor, a grand painting is often about contrast: brightest brights, darkest darks. Not grey mush. I love the stormlight books, but there’s 3 flaws that really effected my enjoyment of them, that I started focusing on the page instead of the story : 1- they’re too structured and predictable that I hardly get surprised by anything, and with every correct guess I become less engaged and I focus on the reasons behind the events instead of the actual thing that’s happening. (I.e shallan/jasnah) 2- they’ve a lot of missed opportunities for characters development that leave me rolling my eyes (I.e Adolin,Adolin,Adolin ugh...) 3-captain superman that’s job is to ruin other people’s storylines instead of being interesting himself + his character arc doesn’t make sense at all. (You know who he’s)

I think this book was the most anticipated book in my life and I was really hyped up for it. The hype didn't ruin it for me, but I found myself not being satisfied with some conclusions and moments in the book. I felt like a lot of confrontational moments where missing and Shallan's arc ended in a place I find really wierd and not healthy. I enjoyed the Warbreak cross-over and a lot of other parts. Overall for me it didn't live up to Words of Radiance, because the first two books had a more "stand alone"-ish vibe and they wrapped up neatly, while in Oathbringer I felt there was so much happening that some threads were either forgotten or rushed, but I still enjoyed it

    I liked it, but so far it's the "slowest" of the books and with no real "high point", just many small victories. I'm super excited about the next book, though! I feel like we got a lot more backstory and character development. I liked Dalinor's backstory, his reputation as a war mongering killer was not just a reputation. Kaladin was a hero like no other, and frankly I wish Shallan picked him instead of the prince, but maybe it's right that Adolin is a better fit because he's less gloomy? I like the portrayal of Kaladin's depression, how it fluctuates throughout the series so far. It is very well done. I wish we spent more time with him in this book. Shallan started to annoy me with her multiple personalities - I feel like Sanderson could've handled it better, more subtly than he did in this one. Let's hope Shallan figures it out in the next book and comes back to be a more relatable and believable character, like she was in book one and two. I can believe that a person creates one additonal persona because of trauma. But two? THREE? Forgetting herself completely, switching back and forth within seconds, talking to herself in third person? Nah. Will you do a full spoilery review of this book? I'd really like to know your opinions :)

  • @TacticusPrime
    @TacticusPrime5 жыл бұрын

    I really hated Kaladin's whiny boy bullshit in book 2, but I think his arch was handled much better in 3. Shallan's multiple personality thing got a bit silly and out of hand but it comes together well in the end. Dalinar continued to be interesting in this book. I liked the way that the reader kind of gets to feeling the same way as Dalinar with all the meetings and politics here. Dalinar wants to get back to the fighting, and after the first two books I'm sure many readers were feeling the same way. Sanderson can be trusted to bring a plot together and the climax of this book really works. I was much less interested in the love triangle between Kaladin, Shallan, and Adolin, but it was actually handled pretty well. So overall, I'm happy with it. I'm looking forward to learning more about the Listeners in book 4. I'm sure Thule and the escapees are out there somewhere. I hope Rlain can find them. Also, I find the Willshapers to be a fascinating Order and I'm looking forward to seeing them more in book 4, via Venli or otherwise.

    You hated kaladin in book two but you could withstand dalinars backstory being forced down our throats every second. Ugh. Every single time. It was like kaladin would get a paragraph progressing plot, then STOP. We have to empathize some more with Dalinar. Here's some back story. I didn't hate the book but that format was so annoying. In the previous 2 books, there was a good amount of back story for all characters and current time plot. Book 3 it seems he's added up what would be both shallan and kaladin back story, and replaced it with only Dalinar. It was so tedious

  • @TacticusPrime

    @TacticusPrime

    5 жыл бұрын

    I hated basically every second of Kaladin's backstory in Book 1. It was atrociously bland, basic, and tedious. Shallan backstory in 2 was ok, but parochial. It was hugely important for Shallan, of course, but just her. Dalinar's backstory was much more meaningful. It reflected on a lot more characters than just Dalinar. It revealed a lot of the background of the creation of the state of Alethkar. It even featured the third god of Roshar. It was miles better than the previous ones.

    I felt like this book was riddled with moments where I felt that the characters acted out of character. There were so many parts that were just skipped over and where character motivation wasn't developed or justified. It really destroyed the experience for me, unfortunately :( I read all three books + edgedancer in the past 2,5 months. I'm definitely going to take a break before I continue because this was such a frustrating and dissatisfying read. Best moments were (spoilers): Kaladin reuniting with his parents. Kaladin's reaction to understanding all sides of the conflict. Kaladin's relapse into depression, which he still managed way better than previous times. Adolin and his sword. Shallan and Wit. (Though it felt very deux ex machina, in itself it was quite beautiful). Shallan and the midnight mother was good, but then it wasn't developed for the rest of the story. Dalinars entire progression. The climax was mostly satisfying, but why can Shallan never do anything remotely useful during the climaxes? The whole Kholinar part was great, though it could've been tighter. I liked Azure, I liked Szeth and Sword-nimi. Didn't get why the skybreakers (who must've known the secret of the recreance) suddenly up and changed sides. Seemed weird. I liked the moments between Adolin and Shallan, but the entire relationship dynamic between Adolin/Shallan/Kaladin was so annoying. Why have it if you're not going to explore it? I don't buy Shallan's decision at the end AT ALL, and I don't buy Kaladin's denial of his own emotions. This seems like a can of worms just waiting to explode in our faces later, and I just CANNOT. *sigh* Overall, so many scenes were skipped (big character and plot moments), which meant pay off was ACTIVELY cut, while POV's that didn't bring anything were added, and characters like Jasnah just stood around with no development. And then she's suddenly queen? No discussion? Okay, end rant, though there's so, so much more :P

Tolkien has some of the darkest fantasy with the book “Chlidren of Húrin” that blows Game of thrones out of the water as dark. i think that oathbringer was good but it could have been great. what i mean by that is that the pacing seemed off in lots of parts of the story. it could have benefited from some cleaning up. some scenes were repeating same informations without advancing the plot and at the same time some stories seemed rushed(szeth devloppement for example) .i rushed through way of king and word of radience and i couldnt put them down ,but as i got to oathbringer that wierd rythme of the story made me put it down countless times and it took way longer to read.

    Dalinar is my least favourite character due to his rigid nature. But I still find that that type of personality is often under represented and demonized in most forms of literature so I do respect his existence as a character. I'm hesitant, nevertheless, I'm looking forward to read this book. Just downloaded it on my kindle a few seconds ago!

    Lazarinth I’ll have to disagree. It gives the story a sense of urgency and panic which I’ll agree, felt overwhelming at times but that was the point. I also felt like it allowed the reader to line up the sequence of events more easily (What happens when that other thing happens). I don’t think it’s poor technical writing but then again, I’m just a dude on KZread who barely knows how to spell

    [SPOILERS] I would say that one of my problems with this book was how Amaram was handled The fact that he turns into a cristaloid monster... I mean it made sense because of Odium being there and his character overall it made sense in that situation that he would take that decition. But I would have liked it to not get to that. A more personal comfrontation with Kaladin without him becoming a monster. Because when you do that as an author its like you are saying "yeah this character reched his end" Also afterwards Kaladin has no remorse in killing the dude because at worst he killed his worst enemy ever, and at best he even saved him from keeping on living as a monster... Other than that and some other minor nitpicks, it was a great book Definetly earns that 9/10

  • @PrimalDirective

    I won't take away from your distaste as how he was handled since it has merit, but to me it makes sense as it seems the unmade bound to him brought out the worst of his character. Amaram speaks of ideals, and is said to be the ideal Alethi man, but truthfully he has none of the aforementioned qualities. The unmade forced his base emotions out, greed, hate, lies, all formed into an "ideal" man persona.

    ***********SPOILERS**************** I was very dissapointed by this one. The most interesting things for me in the first two books were: .The vengeance pact devolved into an institution where high princes raved eachother to win gen hearts under the pretense of the vengeance pact. .How will Dalinar convince them to give this up and aspire to higher ideals? .Will Saddius ever be convinced to move over to Dalinars side? How will his ambitions be dealt with? .How will the Parshendi explain their motives to the Alethi and tmcam there be peace between them? .Will Zeth stop abiding by the oathstone now that he knows that he was never rest truthless? All of this is canceled now. Saddius is gone, Zeth is (for all intents and purposes) gone, the war camps are gone, the shattered planes are gone. The vengeance pact is gone, the Parshendi are (for all intents and purposes) gone. The while God damn story is gone and replaced by something that I found far less interesting. Armageddon came too soon and at the cost of what made this while idea great in my opinion.

    There is a more important plot happening and it’s related to other books in the Cosmere (Mistborn, Elantris, Warbreaker, etc.) Wit, it seems, is at the center of it. Thus, I’m very interested in finding out what his role is in breaking the power of Adonalsium into the 16 shards. As we know, 2 of the shards, Preservation and Ruin, appear in Mistborn, while another 3, Honor, Odium, and Cultivation appear in Stormlight. I expect Wit to provide more answers that lead to this. Some of the characters from his other stories are already in Roshar so I expect an epic confrontation to happen in the later Stormlight books.

    Wonderful installment of the series, except for that romance aspect. Spoilers: He butchered that Shalladin ship at the end. Why invest time writing about it in the first place (dropping hints occasionally with Syl as the captain of the ship), if you can't wrap it up properly? Not that I ship those two, I prefer the three of them not involved in a romantic relationship with each other, but the way it was written seemed shallow. I don't know, let's wait for the next book.

    I'm sorry, but I think this book is bad. Just my opinion, not a truth. It has serious pacing problems and I think Brandon Sanderon gets too much praise for THIS book. It could have been a lot smaller and it would not have been that bad, maybe. I think flashbacks and interludes are not a good format and totally break the pacing. Every time something interesting is going to happen, we get a cliffhanger and change POV. Next time we resume the cliffhanger, the problem is easily avoided or solved. I would have stopped reading it much before the first half, but I was told the end was worthed. It was okay. I gave BS the benefit of the doubt and finished it, hoping the next one is better. If not, I'm not going to keep on reading, which is okay because no one cares anyway :)

So the first twenty minutes of Keepers Creepers is scary as shit my heart was pounding because the charactors had this mysterious scary man in a creepy truck chasing them. But then it was revealed the man was actually a demon. It then became less scary and less interesting because the mystery was gone.

    I found it VEEEEERY boring. A ton of chapters that went nowhere. This story could have literally been about 500 pages and you wouldn't have lost anything substantial. Very bad pacing. It started good but then went all bad. Kaladin is my favorite IMO, and it was sad seeing him take such a backseat to everyone else. P.S: You mentioned that Dalinar doesn't change now. ER.... What book did you read? He changes a ton. Literally one of the main points, in the end, is a big change in him (and possibly his people and the future of his kingdom) that he asks Navani help with.
