    I use this stuff called KY jelly. I saw it on my mom's dresser. She must use it when she rides too because the tube doesn't last that long. Sometimes the cap is missing. She must be in a hurry to ride and drops it. Works great, though.

    I’ll add a few things to what Chris said. Concerning care and cleaning of bib shorts. A few tips. Wash your bib shorts in a garment bag. (I use large size 16x20 inches). Turn bibs inside out before putting in bag. I use Woolite liquid detergent, cool water. Never, ever wash any cycling kit items with anything with Velcro on it! In fact, keep all Velcro away from your cycling clothing, especially bib shorts. This includes gloves and those Velcro straps holding your seat bag on. They will absolutely destroy the inner leg of your bibs if they rub. Hang dry your bibs inside out. When riding, try and avoid having the nose of the saddle rub against the back of the bibs when stopped while straddling the bike (wear thru damage). Wash your bibs right away after a ride. One ride, one wash.

  • @topmech71

    @topmech71

    I've heard this too...which I don't do, can keep the bibs from getting caught and the chamois getting damaged. I've heard of some people washing them in the sink too.

    I cant believe the mistakes I made in the beginning because I didn't have a lot of guidance. I rode years without a chamois pad and I rode years of chamois pads without chamois crème. Things to remember: 1. Bring a post ride dry T-shirt, nothing feels better. 2. If you see everyone doing something and think its stupid, its because you are too new and don't understand things that make the experience better yet. Ex. chamois pads, chamois crème, cycling shoes and cleats, base layers,, wind layers, large sunglasses, incredible amounts of bike food, quality cut kit with quality fabrics, all the gadgets (bike computer, power meter, electronic shifting). 3. The guy who you don't understand how he has all the stuff and looks dialed, probably acquired it over time, not day one out of the bike shop. Build your kit and gear as you can afford it or find things that work for you. Don't just buy what works for someone else.

    When I began racing in the early 1970's, bib shorts did not exist: everyone wore wool drawstring shorts with a thin layer of real chamois leather sewn into the crotch area. But my mentor clipped men's dress suspenders to his shorts to keep them up and didn't bother with the drawstring: a primitive version of a bib short! I tried it, liked it, and did it too. Eliminating the constriction of the drawstring made deep breathing easier. The only problem was that the clips were brass-plated metal which our sweat rusted, so we had to get new suspenders a few times each season. Chamois cream didn't exist yet either. I'm a huge fan of bibs and chamois cream, to me among the biggest advances cycling has made in the past 50 years.

    I never had any issues with bib shorts and have been riding for a long time up to 5h rides without chamois creme !! I can also ride everyday, if it doesn't rain. My only issue is the straps rubbing on the nipple (I don't wear a base layer either), that I solve with a bit of medical tape ! I'll try the Noxema anyway.

    I've had really good luck with Body Glide. Lasts forever even on hot days, it's a stick so you don't need somewhere to wash your hands after applying it, washes out of chamois easily, very effective at preventing chafing. When you get home, get your shorts off ASAP and take a shower. I use aloe vera gel after the shower.

    I apply chamois after I washed the bib shorts then hang to dry indoors. Cream can retain moisture from your perspiration and cause chaffing . That’s my experience

    After 11 years of cycling I didn't think there was anything else to learn, but I was wrong. Thanks for making this video! (I'm still not quite sure about that Noxema smell, though. Too bad they don't make it in a scent-less variety.)

    I gotta try this Noxzema stuff, Important Advice Chris, I've generally been okay in this area but always appreciate a Pro Tip. I've also heard about putting bib shorts in the freezer to kill off any bacteria. That and a decent Saddle too.

    I've used chamois cream over the years and never really liked it that much. I now use plain vaseline and haven't had a saddle sore in ages. Same method, apply some vaseline to the chamois pad and off you go.

    Chris, thanks for another great and informative video. How easily does the Noxema wash out of the chamois ? I hand wash my kit after every ride and use the branded shorts manufacturere creme , which is very pricey. However, after each hand wash the chamois is like new. My concern with trying something else would be that it is difficult to wash out and/or it would prematurely degrade the chamois in my expensive shorts. Thanks

    I have not had any issues with premature wear to the shorts and when I have had to hand wash them in the sink at the hotels I never had a problem getting them cleaned but I always used normal Tide detergent

    I use regular cotton boxer shorts and cotton belt held short pants and have ZERO problems. I ride 35km daily and on the weekends a big ride from 70km to 140km.
