Following up. Added 500 cals plus a Snickers to my past Sunday ride with 4800 feet of climbing. Felt amazing with the extra fuel during the ride and pushed 212W avg. I did find eating cliff bars WORK to break those things down to swallow. To your point today, skipped my scheduled ramp test today because I'm still not recovered from the hard ride mentioned above.

Bike racers by nature are goal driven. It's important to try not to view every training ride as pass/fail if your goal is improving for tomorrow and beyond. Sometimes a good enough training ride is plenty to keep you on track for your goal that is further down the road.

Great advice Chris, and it transfers to other training as well. I lift weights pretty extensively and your tips work for that also. Especially at my age. At 64 an injury can sideline me for weeks, if not months. I've had shoulder injuries dog me for years. In powerlifting we call it ego lifting and it's bad. We have to progress and anything, ANYTHING, that interrupts good training or causes us injury or training scars will stop progression cold. Great advice again Chris!

More wisdom from the guru! Of course, the ones who most need to listen to this, won’t. Two things to add: - When coaching (casually), I employ a dialectic that goes like this: Q: What is the most important workout? A: The next one…. That is, agreeing with Chris, don’t so totally trash yourself on today’s workout that you end up not being able to do well on the next workout. - Another thing I agree with, Pop Tarts are really great en ride eats. Perfect form factor, pre-packaged, & inexpensive. My go to are TJ’s Strawberry Iced. Also thought you’d want to know that the creator of Pop Tarts passed away today…. He left a happy legacy. www.theguardian.com/us-news/2024/feb/14/william-bill-post-pop-tart-inventor-dead

As for ride food, I prefer some of the junky stuff. Yes I'll have gels, Stinger Waffles, Jelly Belly beans, etc but I no longer can do a the traditional Cliff bar or commercial energy bar. I prefer the oatmeal kids cliff bars or Nutrigrain bars, pop tarts, individually packaged baclavas, oatmeal pies, and the like.

Reminds me of team camp in California, I snapped my rear derailleur cable on a big climb day so I was basically doing standing starts on my first-year Emonda SL-R... Once we got back into the flats I felt like I was working hard, thought maybe I was just tired, but I look down and my wheel is rubbing! So I'm getting pulled along by the scooter man with the spare wheels, when I start feeling the bike get squirrely underneath me! I look down and see the wheel is yawing as I put my weight on the saddle. The chainstay was completely severed! So the scooter man had to call his wife with the minivan to come give me a ride to the hotel... Those poor SL-Rs, they weren't ready for me!

Yah, good stuff Chris. You don't build muscle while you're riding 🙂. As a recreational rider (former racer) I just ride to fulfillment and enjoy every ride. If I know I'm not on form, I don't bother looking at the speed/power meter or miles (well not until *after* the ride). If I've been "off the wagon", I don't plan on doing long rides but rather a couple weeks of modest "build-up rides" before I try anything more ambitious. Have fun! . brrrrrrrrrr

Riding should be regularly thru out the week and build up the miles as you feel better each week. No one needs three days or more off the bike (unless your season is over) or you really did something wrong. One two days rest and get back out there. Good luck 🤞👊

Getting rained on and pelted with hail made for a miserable time in the saddle. I knew to raise the white flag when I got to the first stop and didn't want to leave the warmth and shelter of the porta-potty I sequester myself in, despite the pungent odor. As usual, good stuff Chris. But in terms of the team camp example, I think it's a moot point, as veterans should know the drill and their bodies enough to train accordingly. But imagine a young rider who wants to ride the classics who shows up to training camp and pulls off early as you did riding with Petegem. I don't think his DS would be impressed or applaud his "wisdom".

Chris, I admire your achievements on and off the bike, but I need to call you out on the Castelli Alpha jacket… wearing a black jacket is not sensible on the road. Newbies see this clothing, black jacket, black tights, black gloves, black helmet and black shoes. They think “stealth” or “Man in black” or whatever. A Death Wish is what I call it. Yes fluoro yellow looks a bit amateur or “leisure” but black jacket, black tights is not good on the road for your own safety and for visibility of motorists.

I never saw you out riding that day. Looks like you were heading east out twords horse ridge? Or were you out the other way past Tumalo going to Kline Falls. That was a cold day. I got 78 miles in that day. Hot shower felt good at the end. Maybe I will see you out there. Keep spinning those gears.

I'm an old amateur racer now pushing 61 yo so getting in 200 miles a week is all i have time for. I was watching some videos of the local ride scene in San Diego and was wondering why did you move to Oregon? San Diego has awesome rides and terrain.@@ChrisHornerCycling
