Cycling 4,700km to the UK's Most Remote Cinema!

British Isles cycle touring documentary: We cycled 4,700km through the British Isles for a movie date at Britain's most remote cinema! Our goal: to cycle tour from Steyning, West Sussex, to the Schoolhouse Cinema on Out Skerries, in Shetland.
2023 Update: These cycle touring videos were filmed back in 2021. As of 2023 Jill and I are no longer together and Jill is not affiliated with this channel in any way. Wishing her all the best for the future!
In this episode, we cycle along the South coast of England, and bicycle tour through the New Forest. We began adjusting to cycle touring as a couple, and to life on the road, and were already appreciating the kindness of strangers. The adventure was just beginning; neither of us had tried cycle touring in the UK, and we had no idea what lay ahead as we rode our bikes through the British countryside en route to the Shetland Islands. Cycling the UK, Isle of Man, and Ireland would take us way off the beaten track, and we'd learn about our home country and it's neighbours through the people we'd meet along the way. And that would be the real adventure.
CONTEXT:
In 2021, Jill and I set off on an adventure; a long-distance bicycle tour from Sussex to Shetland. Cycling so far would take us over five months and show us sides of the UK and its neighbours that we’d never seen before. We were headed for a movie date at the most remote cinema in the UK, on Out Skerries in the Shetland islands, the northernmost reaches of the UK. The perfect spot for a date.
Catch a train, a ferry, or a plane there? No, we’d been indoors for far too long. Why not hop on our bikes for over 5 months of fresh air, and 4,700km of pedalling through every country on the British Isles instead?
Cycle touring as a couple was a first for us, and would take us through England, Wales, The Isle of Man, Ireland, Northern Ireland, and Scotland, finishing on one of the most remote islands in the UK: Out Skerries, in Shetland.

The KZread algorithm should be pushing this. A very good series for anyone contemplating shorter cycling tours covering the bases you did. Or going further.

Yes there are quite a few cycle touring videos that seem to have got traction and many more views than your series - which of itself is surely more interesting than these others due to the geographical coverage and its amusing objective. I can offer no advice on the algorithm. But I expect there are KZread videos about it! @@TieranFreedman

I believe where I first saw your post on facebook you asked if anyone else did a bicycle trip as a first date. If I got that wrong then I apologize for rambling on here. But if you did well I can tell you that in 1983 a woman I had just met and was talking to, telling her about a year long bicycle tour I did around the United States just two years previously, said she had a job in Palm Springs California starting in February and wanted to know if I would ride across the country with her. Of course I said yes. We were on the east coast of the US and this was September. First she had to do a swim from Long Island NY to Connecticut shore, about 13 miles. So we left right after that, our first date lasted three months and 3600 miles. It was the first time she had ever camped and I got to explain the differences from National Parks, State Parks, National Forest, and private campgrounds. Long story short we have been cycling together ever since along with being married.

What a lovely experience! No apology necessary, rambles are always welcome, thank you for sharing your story😊 If you left in September does that mean you were cycling through the winter? That must have been tough! Congratulations to you both, that is an amazing way to start a relationship. Where else have you guys been touring?

Hello Tieran, it was a fantastic way to start a life long relationship. We did ride into the winter but were in the south west so it wasn't too cold. Have ridden in every state in the US and that is about all. We try and do a 1600 plus or minus kilometer ride every year. But sure hope to do another cross country trip soon. Looking forward to your nest trip video, you are really good at it.

Hi there, wow so happy to hear you've watched all the episodes in one go 😁 I'm actually still publishing the videos from this series! I'm aiming for one every 3 weeks or so at the moment (each one takes quite a while to edit). So you're all caught up! But don't worry, there are at least 4 more videos to come from our quest to get to the Schoolhouse cinema and the stories we found on the way!

@@TieranFreedman That's awesome news!!! I know only too well how arduous the editing of videos is as I have recently started doing our own cycle rides, though I have to say they're not a patch on yours as we currently only have footage from my husband John's chest mount. (Still saving for a drone and extra camera 🥴) Plus we are the other end of the age spectrum as we are both in our 60's 🤣🤣🤣 so still getting to grips with technology being used. I should also mention that we ride a tandem with a trailer. I can totally empathise your difficulties going through gates/stiles!!! Can't wait for your next episode, we're subscribed so will look out for the alerts. Great work guys!!! Kay & John @TheTillyTwo

@@TieranFreedman It was a brilliant experience. 93 days and 4500 miles. I spent 41 nights with Warm Showers hosts who are always brilliant! My route was generally speaking a northern route from Portland, ME to Cannon Beach, OR and a combination of recognized routes from the Adventure Cycling Association and my own Google maps choices. Took in Mount Rushmore, Devil's Tower, Badlands, Yellowstone & Glacier. Living in Wisconsin the weather is turning fast. We have already had our first frost, so unlikely anything long distance will happen this Fall but a friend & I are looking at cycling the California coast from north to south next April/May. If you get a rainy day and stuck in your tent check out my vids at Soulmate Cyclists.

Hi Tiernan. You’re very welcome to Ireland. I’m guessing by your name that you’ve some connection with Ireland. No matter how many times you say it, or someone claims it’s a geographical term, Ireland is not and never will be a british isle.
