CWS Ejection and Game Management

There are a bunch of culminating events that lead to the explosion from the Tennessee dugout. This is a long clip because it's important to see how these situations build and how umpires need to be aware of escalating moments in a game.
A ball/strike warning in the 2nd inning, a pitch clock warning, a correct batter interference no call, some close pitches that didn't go their way, etc..
You see great work by the entire crew here to manage the game and maintain control.
I'll leave the sound on for entertainment only because they're so far off base.

I completely agree, Brandon. These "commentators" have no idea of game management. Most umpires are extremely "thick-skinned" and let coaches bark for a while, but when it comes to Balls & Strikes, there is very little leeway given. After 29 years of umpiring High School, Little League and Legion Ball, I probably have seen it all. LOL

The umpires were very forgiving of unsportsmanlike conduct. There was not batter interference and the pitches were balls. The coach was way out of line. Stop listening to the commentators, they are nothing more than retired jocks with very little understanding of the rules of the game and what’s really going on on the field. They don’t know the rules and they don’t understand the role of all players coaches, and, umpires. “Just let them play blue!“, Is one of the stupidest things said on a baseball field. as an experienced umpire, i think one common thread in this video that i don't think has been mentioned is the body language and reaction(s) of the catchers. on the close ball/strike calls, and the non-batter-interference call, neither of the catchers react with any visible disagreement whatsoever; and obviously they are the closest defensive player to the play being called. i highly commend each of these players for their calm, respectful demeanor while their respective coaches go berserk. (i won't even favor the announcers with a comment...). i always make it a point to (subtly) thank/compliment the good catchers for helping me manage/control situations like this. they are rare and invaluable.

NCAA is trying to crack down on verbal abuse coming from coaches. Warnings are issued initially, unless significant, to give some latitude instead of immediate ejection. If the coach(es) go thru that warning and don't stop then they are ejected. Whether its a regular season game or CWS. There's no separate rule book for each. You're on national TV - act accordingly. The umpires are.

The announcers who kept saying the umpire is showing out and they need to just let them play will be saying two innings later they have to get this game under control. The coaches & assist. Coaches remind of 99% of youth baseball coaches in today’s game wanting to argue balls and strikes from a ball bucket or dugout. Eventually the game so many of us love will no longer exist because of the verbal abuse. Go ahead a call me crazy but I just know how soft this generation of kids are these days.

ahhhh...no this crew thinks the game is about them period!!! You have to have a thicker skin than that as an umpire at any level. As an umpire if the guys in the dugout are yelling good pitch, looked good etc. after every ball I call, I'm not even batting an eye that's part of the game and I could care less. Now if you want to approach me and step out on the field and argue about balls and strikes that is a completely different story but I've still never tossed anyone, you just simply let the coach know OK that is enough and so far I guess I have never had a coach that wanted to get tossed because I clearly draw the line and the next move is up to them.

They want to say they’re being to harsh because of what the moment is but if you give them a little rope and are too lenient their behavior usually only escalated to the negative as things go forward. The umpires have to draw the line immediately to say this won’t be tolerated and if you cross it then get your early shower. Tennessee has a bad reputation for this behavior by their coaches which makes them need to draw that line all the more. I get that they’re young and fiery but there is a right way and a wrong way to address the umpires, and yelling and screaming at them is never going to get you on their good side.

The ejection was justified. Just because it's the World Series doesn't mean coaches or player's can do whatever they want to do? Tennessee is notorious for verbally attacking umpires and playing the victim. It's sad to see the lack of leadership their coaches provide. This is not a one time episode, they do it every game. Their player's are the worst in the country when it comes to showboating, disrespecting authority and acting like they're entitled. This is all on Vitello's shoulders. There's a huge difference between passion and lack of class. I can guarantee that this will be a priority for the NCAA after this 2022 year. Umpires are not out there to put up with constant abuse. Don't be naive in thinking the coaches and player's are not doing anything and the umpires are just looking for opportunities to eject them. No umpire on this level wants to eject anyone. The things being yelled are 90% of the time are four letter words, personal attacks, and unacceptable in college baseball. They take a lot, let a lot go but there is a point where a line has to be drawn. For anyone that says, umpires get paid to put up with a constant bombardment of childish conduct are badly mistaken. The announcers continue to blame umpires and second guess everything they do. Why? It's because most have never played at a high level and those that have were, at one time were player's. They have a player's mentality and make comments from a player's perspective. Some of them need to get their premadona tails out there and put the mask on. They will certainly have an entirely different perspective if they did. I hope to see the NCAA make a drastic change that will hold coaches and player's accountable for their behavior and conduct in a game played by student athletes on the amateur level. MLB is totally different. Those guys get paid lot's of money to act like asses and MLB umpire association backs their umpires. Suspensions, fines, etc, are some of the things that keep the bs to a minimum. It doesn't completely eliminate it but it does minimize the confrontations. The bottom line is, "nobody's bigger than the game."

When I umpired, I allowed the managers/head coaches quite a bit of venting because they represent the team, but I didn't take any nonsense from the assistants. This was a good ejection but not a good look for the ejecting umpire. Beginning at 5:49, he proceeds to give the heave-ho twice, when he was only ejecting one person. Once is enough.

No need to "warn" someone to stop doing something they clearly know not to do, but do anyway. The "warning", because of this ridiculous rule, should be seen as "you've crossed THIS umpire's line. It's a shameful rule. ...and I have no interference on that batter, either. But an absolutely horrible look to have U3 run halfway across the field for that ejection that PU and U1 didn't feel the need to act on. Yikes.

You've obviously never umpired or umpired on a high level. Your observation is so far from reality. If you could hear what's actually being yelled from the dugout, you would have a different perspective. It's X rated language constantly. Umpires let a lot go but in a game played by student athletes there are limitations. This, in no way, is on the umpires. This is on the coaches and there lack of class and professionalism. Can't really blame the kids because they are doing what is allowed. Umpires are not out there for abuse. The last thing they want is to eject anyone. There does come a point where you have to put a stop to the actions of these coaches that feel they can say and do anything they want to. If the umpires don't say or do anything, it just continues to get worse and results in an Umpire getting reprimanded by their evaluators, which results in tarnishes the umpires future that they've spent many years working to work this level of baseball. Most have spent 15 to 20 years, endless number of camps, clinics and schools to reach the D-1 level and to be selected to work post season games. People need to think about that and realize the things these guys put up with before jumping to conclusions. No disrespect intended. Just some insight from someone who's been there and experienced this first hand.

Why is U3 running in to get rid of somebody from the 1B dugout? This is sometimes necessary at lower levels of ball when you have a new guy working the plate who has allowed too much from the dugouts and is losing control of the game. But this is D1 ball and the PU appeared to have things under control -- issuing warnings, handling the BI situation well, etc. Up until this point, this crew seemed to be doing a good job with a very challenging assignment.

The umpires job is to "manage the game." The last thing a veteran umpire that calls on this level is to eject anyone. The ejection was justified. They're not there to be cussed and abused constantly by coaches that act like little league coaches. This is college baseball, not professional. They should be held accountable and lead by example. It's unacceptable behavior that the NCAA needs to address immediately. Things yelled out of the dugout on a non-stop basis would make a sailor blush. It's disgusting to me that a head coach, athletic director or university would put up with this type of conduct. It speaks volumes about their integrity and programs.

Of course I wasn't on the field and only see what the camera shows and in no way am I at that level. But I was surprised how many, "umpires are always perfect" comments to this video. And in defense of the commentators, "they are correct that if there is contact, you're likely to get the call." Several in the comments agreed it wasn't interference, but I'll bet if the catcher hit the batter on his throw, you'd change your mind.

The analyst says "let 'em play" and then in the next breath complains that umpires "have lost control". Well pal, you can't have it both ways. You either enforce rules or don't. The coaches know the rules and how NCAA wants the rules enforced. If they choose to ignore how their league wants the rules enforced, that's their choice. They're testing the boundaries. They found out the hard way what those boundaries were.

In the pregame plate meeting I tell the head coaches, “We are only dealing with you two. If any assistant leaves the dugout or the coaches box to argue a call or a potential rules issue they will be ejected immediately. This right here is their warning, they will not get another one.” I only had one assistant try it this past season. I made a call for out 3, turned around to walk back to where I’m supposed to be between innings, and when I get there and turn back around I have an assistant running towards me. I automatically give him the heave ho. He said “you’re gonna throw me out for asking a question?” I said “absolutely, go talk to your head coach about why.” And I turned around and refused to engage him. Other than that, I didn’t have one assistant question a call the whole season. If a head coach wants to come talk to me, fine, but call time out and come TALK; you yell at me from a dugout or coaches box, you are gonna get one warning and if you keep it up you are gonna go. If you, as an umpire, let coaches start yelling and start questioning every pitch, they won’t stop. If you handle your plate meeting correctly and coaches know what to expect, and you follow through on your warning, you would be surprised how much smoother things go for you because the coaches know they can’t get away with acting like fools. This crew did a fantastic job. Tennessee is known for arguing everything and their assistant coaches are always leaving the dugout and coming on to the field to argue calls…they should be tossed every single time!!!!
