Looks like he anticipated the ball tailing and it never tailed. That's why you always have to avoid into foul territory.

I need an explanation why a MLB umpire in a 4-man system was straddling the line in position A. I don't blame Conroy for getting hit on this one because when a hit ball hits a base, all bets are off. As a second baseman (in addition to an experienced umpire) I know that quite well. This was just unlucky, aside from the initial position.

Okay. So, did the umpire move too soon? Obviously it's a live ball, but curious to hear what people in the know think about his early movement into fair territory. I know for me, in two man, I'm stuck in foul territory usually on these hits. My main concern is finding a way into the infield and/or hoping my partner recognizes my predicament and goes to cover bases. (No runners on, obviously in those cases.) Not sure why he moved into fair territory especially given they are in 4 man.

I don't know why he was straddling in A; starting there got him stuck and then hit. Had he been completely in foul territory to start, it's a double down the line.

It's one thing to run through the player. It's another thing to lower your shoulder and punish the player making the tag. This is a textbook ejection and it's been that way at least as long as I started umpiring in 1992.

I’m not saying I know everything, but from the rerun I am watching, the ball was already passed the catcher at the time of contact. However, the catcher moved into the zone where the swing was completing. If the catcher would have stayed back, he would not have been hit.

My partner and I were umpiring a high school game when one of the coaches was complaining about my partners “zone” from the third base coaches box. At some point I happened to be on the baseline and he asked me “what I thought”. So, being the designated “smart as” of the day, I went to the area of the first base coaches box, waited for the next warm up throw and yelled his name and told him, “You’re right, you CAN see much better from her than you can from behind the plate.” 😂😂 It was amazingly silent on balls and strikes the rest of the day

You'd better be ready when crowding the plate. I've also seen some catchers completely level runners so i don't understand why this is now illegal when the catcher knows what he's setting himself up for.

When I was growing up this was standard base running procedure from 3rd to home.. especially if you’re dead to rights, you always had hope. And some catchers like to chirp while you’re at the plate, nothing like meeting them at home on a play like this circa 2005.
