CV90120 Swedish Light Tank - Featherweight with a Heavy Punch featuring

The CV90120 is a prototype light tank that has undergone continuous development since its first appearance in the summer of 1998 at the EUROSATORY defence exhibition in Paris. However, attempts to mount higher calibered guns on the CV90 can be traced back to 1993, when Hägglunds collaborated with GIAT to make the CV90105 TML, which was equipped with a GIAT Industries TML 105 turret. The initial development on the CV90120 was presumably started by Hägglunds AB and continued when Alvis Ltd. purchased the company in 1997. Development continued under the guise of BAE Systems, which acquired Alvis Ltd. in 2004, Hägglunds included.

This is actually an IFV. It should never be used as a main battle tank lol. It can be used to counter normal tanks trough ambushes though. Especially if you use that 105 mm gun turret (which is not standard). The CV90 is one of the, if not thee, best IFV's out there.

@@MegaBanne Exactly, it is basically a throwback to the infantry-support tank, where it offers tank-punch guns to mechanized infantry. Having a couple of units with the 120mm along a majority of 35mm vehicles simply gives you more versatility and confidence.

So great that they took the time to look up how Hägglunds, particularly the "Ä", was pronounced. Don't really care if it's mispronounced but it's nice when they do the extra work not to. Also looking at the different CV90 variants makes me think it's a great job being a CV90 engineer. "How about we put a 120mm on it? How about we put a 40mm Bofors on it? How about we put a 35mm Bushmaster on it? etc.".

I think that the CV90 family does not come into it's true power until you make a mixed brigade force, utilising all the different versions, but with parts commonality for the carrier wehicle. Imagine a few VC90-120 for taking out bunkers and enemy MBTs, a bunch of CV90-30 for Infantry support, and then CV90 with mjölner mortar for cheepskates or AMOS for the wallet-warriors, add to that Roof-mounted Spike missiles on all vehicles, and a Combat ambulance and a combat logistics vehicle. Imagine that fighting-force where from "mbt" to ambulance, they all use the same parts, so excepting the weapon systems, you got one supply-line of spare parts to worry about! It is in the maintenance cost post where the CV90 system would shine for a smaller military that does not have a whole military-industrial complex to keep employed.

@Eric Hamilton , the British tank was never tested, as they would not provide any in time for the trials. Hence the M1A1, LeClerc and Leopard 2 the the ones in the actual trials. Outside those, Sweden got some T-72, MT-LB and BMP from former East German depots, as well as an invitation to Russia to get a thorough presentation of the T-80 at the factories there, as well as the opportunity to crew them at the factory test facilities. Stridsvagn 2000 never went further than conceptual mock-ups, as there was no time to spend on development. The tests had shown that the Swedish tank fleet was vastly inferior to NATO and Russian tanks alike, and whole fleet needed to be replaced soonest possible. Hence Sweden adapted the Leo2 Imp (further development of the A4,) as basis for the new fleet. This resulted in a fork from Leo 2 Imp, with the Stridsvagn 122 involving lot of Swedish companies in development and manufacturing under licence while the A5 was developed in parallel as main branch.

This CV90/120 is just one reason why the British Army should have gone with BAE Systems CV90/50 instead of the debacle that is AJAX. Also, selecting a CV90/40 variant as it's Warrior replacement. With BAE building at least two factories in the UK to churn them out and continue development into the future.

It would be a very effective reconnaissance vehicle. Some potential to be a tank destroyer but may be too lightly armored. Some of the 105mm gun turrets would be useful for a fire support vehicle to aid infantry. A 105mm gun could have better elevation and a better variety of ammunition. Potentially being self-propelled artillery with a direct fire option with some armor-piercing capability. The 120mm AMOS mortar turret is another very useful vehicle. Highly mobile with a powerful punch. The AMOS can use TOT fire control which could allow 6 or more shells to hit the targets at the same time by using different chargers and barrel angles. A battery of three CV90s with AMOS turrets could land 18 rounds on an area target all landing within seconds. The AMOS 120mm mortar turret can be used in the direct fire mode. The AMOS turret could fire smart rounds in the indirect mode that could seek out and destroy armored vehicles from above and penetrating less protective roof armor. These would likely have a heat-seeking device to detect and fire on armored vehicles. SAAB has developed guided mortar rounds. GPS is an option for some guided mortar ammunition. With smart anti-armor ammunition, the AMOS could be a very effective tank destroyer firing in the indirect mode. Unless tanks have improved active or passive armor above. But the AMOS could take on many different targets with guided or unguided rounds. Against infantry, the AMOS can be very deadly. With airburst an option using proximity fuses.

It's lightning fast and has a counter-thermal/IR signature armour possibly setting it at the same level as a T-14 (as not many yet can tell the benefits w that armour package). In interesting feat to counter a russian enemy in need of a light, strong tank with strong attacking power.

THIS thing...with the 105mm gun is what BAe SHOULD have submitted for the MPF program...not the piece of shit updated M8.

With that weight. I’d actually call this a medium tank. I’m going by the modern trend of the average weight of light tanks that militaries are looking to adopt these days and the currently adopted wheels motor gun carriages that are acting like light tanks in the interim. Hell even BAE systems is trying to sell another light tank that’s lighter and less armed than this. So even looking at their product lineup I’d call this a medium tank.

Alot of light tanks in today's militaries would most likely be able to take on a t-90 There's a few light armored vehicles like the centauro in Italian service that can accomplish this aswell. It's not often good to underestimate any vehicle even the lighter ones

No machine gun significantly reduces its self protection capability. This was a fatal flaw in WW2 and is still likely to continue to be so. Adding a turret on top of the turret seems not to be a good idea. I can see two additional roles available for this vehicle. Mobile coastal artillery Helicopter protection However, it might be more attractive to have a 120mm mortar which fires Strix projectiles at tanks. It would then be an infantry support vehicle.

The Grkpbv 90 has a double barreled 12cm mortar capable to firing Strix, so that's within the family.
