The OTOMATIC | Autocannon Overkill

The OTOMATIC was a self-propelled anti-aircraft system developed privately by the Italian OTO-Melara company, in collaboration with OTO-Breda. The name OTOMATIC is actually that of the anti-aircraft turret armed with a powerful 76 mm cannon. The turret could be mounted on a modified OF-40 tank or standard Leopard 1A2 MBT (Main Battle Tank) hull, the first produced by the OTO-Melara and the second produced under license and used by the Italian Army. It was developed as a heavy self-propelled anti-aircraft gun for use in Armored Divisions. The name is the acronym of OTO Main Anti-aircraft Tank for Intercept and Combat.

The OTOMATIC didn't get any interest at the time, but with the proliferation of drones on the battlefield it seems like a concept worth revisiting.

Tbh generally at medium range a radar guided autocannon firing proximity fused canister or fletchette is expected to have a much better hitrate than SAMs against a manouvering target. It also has a much fater engagement cycle, no minimum range and a 360 degree target cone, making stelth less relevant in defeating it. Systwms like this have already taken over base defefence in the west, and will likely also be integrated into mobile force air defence.

@@georgewashington2321 Look at the history of air warfare: air cooled radial engines were less vulnerable to damage then water cooled inline engines during WW2 and Korea. The AD-1 skyraider a WW2 design that operated into the 60's because it was tough, had good loiter time, carried a large payload and it could take damage that would down all the jets then in service, it even shot down a Mig-17. Aircraft like the A-10, Su- 17 and Su-25 were built to fight and survive in a environment were aircraft like the MIG-29 and F-16 could be brought down by even rifle fire. In 1973 the Israeli Airforce had lost A-4 Skyhawks to SA-7 (manpad) missiles, one of the solutions to the problem was to extend the tail pipe so when the missile hit it exploded away from the aircraft. No aircraft is invulnerable just some aircraft are better then others in taking battle damage and being able to return home.

17:20 the real reason behind the OF40 were the overly strict export rules of German Government. A different Leopard built from Italy would have allow Kraus Maffei to still earn money from licensed parts but not from a "weapon system" which allowed free export rights. I imagine a SPAAG like this would come EXTREMELY useful today in Ukraine instead of using hundreds of thousands $ worth of missiles to take down Russio/Iranian drones worth a few thousands at best. I guess there will be a huge boost in interest for the Draco system in the near future, as missiles proved to be the wrong way to deal with expendable cheap drones in recent conflicts.

@@AKUJIVALDO LOL! Have you ever seen how a naval 76mm round is made, compared to a 120mm tank round? Evidently not. Because you are reasoning like someone that believes a .45 ACP round is more powerful than a 30-06 because .45 is a bigger caliber than .30. LOL! The tank round is large, but short, because it has to be handled into the cramped turret of a tank. In a APFSDS round, the penetrator occupies the entire lenght of the round, and the powder is around it. The naval 76mm round have not that problem. It's narrower, but longer, and it works at an higher pressure. The "76mm APFSDS" use the same kinetik penetrator launched at the same speed than the 120mm APFSDS. Only the diameter of the discard sabot is smaller. But you think that it's the discard sabot to be lethal for the tanks, right? LOL! More. While active protection systems would have made the Otomatic less vulnerable to tank and infantry weapons today that it was in the '80s, the reverse is not true. No tank active protection system is capable to intercept two rounds arriving in less than 1s from the same direction. Obviously only you can talk about "untouchable" believing it's something I said.
