CV9040 Switchology and Fire Control System

The CV9040B and C. One of the largest guns on an IFV, with some neat tricks up the sleeve of the C Model. Note: After recording, I found a CV9040 gunner. He says the gun is actually stabilised.
Again, using Steel Beasts Pro PE, if you are/were a crewman of a vehicle modelled in the sim which I haven't covered, please reach out to me.

As a young platoon commander I was TC on EXACTLY this vehicle over 20 years ago. And I can confirm: Yes, the TC does ALOT of loading of the gun. I still have problems with my right shoulder. However, loading the Bofors 40mm is very different from other vehicle mounted cannons. Since there are 24 rounds in the gun you don’t normally fill it up while fireing or being fired upon so it doesn’t interfere with your other TC-tasks in combat. You back down into cover to fill the magasines from the carousell, and then the gunner and tc do it together. At the same time, the riflemen in the back can help out by breaking open new boxes from under the turret basket and restock the carousell.

Much more likely to harm the vehicle electronics than the occupants. Like a car, the occupants have no direct path to ground, which is necessary. The vehicle does, and the power will find its way through the metal in the car to the ground. I doubt anyone in the vehicle has been harmed by power lines, unless they try to get out.

If the situation allows it the troops in the back usually reloads the gun and moves rounds between the upper and lower carousel. You have to open the gate to the turret basket so you can't move the gun electrically but that's usually not such a big problem considering that the commander can focus on commanding or reloading the MG. Reload is also much faster as the as the troops don't have to bend over to move ammunition.

One of the meanest IFV playable in steelbeasts. Great effect against troops in the open, behind cover in building...basicly everywhere. Able to slaugther any IFV (short of H-IFV) that you encounter , able to effectively engage Helicopters...and even able to cripple tanks (so you can at least run away from them) For me, this works better then any ATGM equiped IFV...even against tanks.

Doing this via Steel Beasts would be quite interesting, as I'm well aware as a Chally 2 crewmen that our VP and gunnery jargon is a bit different from the Americans. Maybe get other guests in to go over target engagement from other armies? I would love to hear how Leopard or T72 crewman identify, hand over, engage and correct on various targets. A quick gunnery lesson on any variety of nations or vehicles if you were. While the FCS is obviously interesting, I would love to see how actually going through an engagement and corrections would be. Can gladly take you through chally 2 gunnery procedure sometime if curious! Thanks for AFV related content as always. With us being on lockdown we're not doing nearly as much of it as I would like at my current unit.

The main point is that it uses the 35mm Bushmaster III chain cannon and not the 40mm Bofors. So it is likely a lot closer to the older video for the CV9030 FIN with a 30mm Bushmaster II as both guns are developed from the 25mm gun of the Bradley. I have not the idea of the fire control system part of the two variants but the gun will be closer to the Finish CV90. Only Sweden use it with a 40mm Bofors cannon.

It concluded that in fact hillbilly armor definitely helped and improved Shermans' protection against various Japanese AT weapons. That's not the usual conclusion; the source is in Russian but includes a transcript so you can google translate it. The Russian is read clearly and slowly using a vocabulary of CERF B1 and below. I'm curious how much ammo the exported 30mm and 35mm Bushmaster CV90's carry. 24 ready rounds just seems pitiful, especially if you're dividing that up into HE and AP. I'm guessing those others carry more ammo so it makes you wonder why they chose the 40mm bofors. You're not penning MBT's from the front anyways so that little bit of extra penetration is kinda meaningless. If you see something a 35mm Bushmaster can't pen you're either gonna launch an anti tank missile if you have it or get into cover. I just can't imagine many scenarios where that little bit of extra penetration makes up for the lack of ammo.

  • @USchyldt

Essentially, when the vehicle was designed Sweden used lots of 40 mm Bofors in the air defense. Three different generations of the gun was in use (all the way back to some obsolete WWII era guns for static air defense). There was loads of ammunition and tons of spare parts available. It was also one of Bofors main product lines which would ensure that manufacture and development would continue. (As long as the world didn't change. It did.) Introducing a new kind of gun, would mean staring an entirely new line of ammo manufacturing - or being dependent on imports.

Larger rounds mean more versatility - better penetration, bigger HE boom, proximity roundswith bigger area of effect, more complex fuses possible. There are always scenarios where bigger boom, better pen, better fusing can prove useful. It's harder to fit a lot of stuff in a small round.

  • @huntforandrew

@@barrygregory8177 We've reached the point technologically that we can fit anything a 40mm round could hold in a 35mm or 30mm round. One of the most advanced fuses in the world right now is probably being used on the 35mm Oerlikon Skyranger so size really isn't a constraint at the 30mm and up range. On top of that a 40mm round isn't gonna hold much larger HE charge than say a 35mm round, in fact it might even be less. The fact that the 40mm Bofors casing is significantly longer than the 35mm, 40x365 vs 35x228 means it has a larger charge and a higher velocity. The higher the velocity the thicker the shell has to be to not break apart when being fired. Same reason in WW2 tankers preferred the 75mm Shermans HE shell over the High Velocity 76mm. And that brings us back to my point. You have a slight increase in penetration for a serious decrease in ready ammunition. I looked it up and the 35mm Bushmaster version of the CV90 has 70 rounds ready to go. That's almost 3 times as many rounds you can fire before the commander has to stop looking out for enemies and start reloading the gun.

@@huntforandrew It is true that miniaturization has come further along now. But remember, this IFV was designed in the late 1980:ies. The arming decision was made from the technological standpoint of around 1985 or there about. The other arming options came about only after the test vehicles had been made and trials with them completed. And some of the variants were designed only after production had been completed on the first series of 9040 vehicles for Sweden. Norway (the first customer IIRC) wanted a gun with better Nato interoperability. And so did Denmark and the Netherlands - but they chose 35 mm Bushmaster over the 30 mm that Norway (and then Finland) had ordered. I don't recall the years these orders were placed, but they might have been up to ten years after the effective decision point for Sweden. As all of these countries had plenty of Bofors 40 mm in the AD or naval arsenal, it could have been a viable option for them too - but many of them was at the time looking to phase out their 40 mm L/70 AA guns, so they decided not to arm their CV90:ies with an outgoing weapon system. The technology may develop further, but it isn't the only factor that decides which weapon to choose. Far more important (in my experience) can be factors like having a stockpile of ammunition, spare parts, an existing knowledge base and logistics solution and so forth. (I had completed my basic training as a platoon leader in Swedish armored infantry in 1990, when I got to visit some of the trials om the CV9040. I got to drive one of the test vehicles from the firing range - and nearly wrecked it when we lost road grip crossing a bridge covered in gravel at around 70 kmph. But I didn't, luckily.)

The vehicle is armoured well enough to face a 30mm MK...Its an IFV, NOT a tank.... The 40mm rounds have a brass casing and have insensitive propellant and "warhead", so also not as big as a problem. And that there is not armour between crew and ammo is the same for almost all IFV...exept the most recent ones with an unmanned turret.
