Jokes aside, I happen to have a 97 rav4, and happen to work at an auto parts. Poor thing already has 330k miles on it, i can tell it needs new engine mounts, but aside that it’s pretty great. I’ve been trying to learn as much as I can, so I can do maintenance on it myself. And your videos are great, mine is a Fwd, A/T so there’s some differences here and there, overall tho, best KZreadr when it comes to teaching me about my own car. Thank you Paul.

Thanks! I'm glad you like the videos. I try to make things as detailed as possible. I might be doing engine mounts soon on mine too. I suspect the mounts may be the reason my exhaust flex pipe under the engine keeps breaking.

In the first 30 seconds, you described the 97 Rav4 my wife just bought. CV boots are GONE. Left strut is soaked in strut oil that's leaked out. This explains why the car clicks turning left or right and the front suspension bottoms out. 265,000 kilometers on the odometer. So! I'm doing everything. Im also replacing the head gasket and refreshing the top end. Laping the valves and new valve stem seals. The car does run good.

Yes, that's the unfortunate reality of having a 26 year old car. Everything will be worn out. You'll need new springs for sure. You might want to consider the Old Man Emu lift springs. You'll get better ground clearance and it's the same price as buying normal springs. Make sure to buy only Toyota parts. I've had to remove almost every Autozone part I've installed so far. One of my next projects is fixing my front suspension AGAIN. The front fenders are at different heights and I suspect my Autozone struts have something to do with it. Original Toyota CV axles can be as much as $500 each, so you can save some money by going to the junkyard. If you find CV axles with boots that are NOT torn yet, they'll likely be good as new.

Awesome information Paul! Love how you're very humble to correct yourself very very openly so.... It provides a level of trust to you & your videos. I'm exceptionally capable mechanically wise but love watching your videos for tid bits that i pick up.... Your videos are exceptionally "technically correct" too, - of which i think is of the utmost importance on utube tutorial videos. Peopleare watching them to learn how to do stuff, probably very very often for the first time & you have excellent audio, verbal & camera technique. Exceptionally "polished productions"!!! Well done. Keep them coming! I think people appreciate you & your ability very very much! Rav4'er in N.Z. with a 96' ex J.D.M factory 3SGE (180 h.p.) Manual @ 270'000km.

That backlash that your getting am wandering if its not really the Cv joint causing the issue, but the actually driveshaft where the front and rear drive shafts connect. the bearing there is sealed and connects the two. mine was sealed the boot that was covering it was worn out. I notice that when I pack it with grease I dont get that thud anymore but cant find the boot to cover it back so after awhile the grease comes out and the back lash gets worse.I think it might be that would like if u were able to check it out and see.

@@tomnethercott That seems way too high. Replacing the CV axles takes 1/2 hour per side in the rear, and less than 1 hour per side in the front. Replacing the boots is very time consuming.
