Custom clothes for UE Metahuman / UE4-5 / Blender 3+ /MarvelousDesigner 11
For the past couple of days, I have struggled to find a suitable workflow for adding custom clothes to my Metahuman characters. It frustrates me to sit through hour-long videos that could have been easily condensed down to 10 minutes.
Keep in mind, this is just a step-by-step clickthrough and not a tutorial about "How to create clothes in Marvelous Designer" or "How to correctly Weightpaint in Blender".
This workflow is suitable for UE4 and UE5, Blender 3.0/3.1/3.+ and MarelousDesigner 10 and 11
I hope that I was able to save you some time!

This is an amazingly concise and the most digestible 'clickthrough' as you say to really see the bigger picture of this entire workflow / pipeline. Thank you again for making this video! I will definitely use this workflow - Liked and subscribed
This was so helpful! I am a beginner and this tutorial is truly one of the kind. It was honestly so refreshing to find a tutorial that is straight to the point and even beginner like me can follow it with ease. Great work!
" Hope it helps" yes indeed it did, have been trying for a long time to do this. Thank you so much Nils
what a phenomenal in depth tutorial, thank you so much!!
if you have MERGE BONE ERROR, then simply reimport metahuman bosy to blender with import settings: check "manual orientation", select 'Forward Y' and 'Z Up', uncheck 'automatic bone orientation'. Make sure that clothes export orientaion is the same as metahuman import orientation listed above!
Holy crap out of all tutorials this one freakin helped me so good. I've been running through tutorials ALL FREAKIN WEEK, I'm getting massive clipping issues but I'm using Daz to Unreal Engine 5 so maybe that's it. Gen8 based skeleton. Not a lot of helpful tutorials on that, I wish there were. But WOW thank you so much bro. I subbed.
Let me know if you want a more detailed step-by-step tutorial!

Amazing tutorial! Thanks a lot
FINALLY found a Solution to the error everyone has been getting. For "FAILED TO MERGE BONES" The problem is that when Importing the body mesh, I had imported it with "Automatic Bone Orientation" enabled. That was a mistake because Unreal can't read the bones once blender changes them. Also, when exporting the clothes, make sure to Enable "Armature and Mesh " just as he does in the video. THANK ME LATER !!!

This is beautiful and finally something helpful too! I would really appreciate it if you would consider doing a tutorial on how to prepare such a mesh for gaming. I saw many triple A studios actually are able to rig these clothes and then siimulate them on their character so they move in real-time. I know UE5 also does that and is capable of it without having too big performance issues so any tutorial on that would be wild!

I mean the parts hes not showing you is what the simple automated transfer weights looks like when animating. I can guess how it looks, and its.. not great. There is a hundred million bones that you need to know how to do fine weight paint properly to make it look nice, its so much time and effort. To say nothing of what it would take to get swishy cloth effects. When you think about how many man hours those $600 outfits took? Not that unreasonable.
Thanks for this useful tutorial Can you make another awesome tutorial to show how we can add animation to this character with clothes animation

greatest tutorial clothing metahuman, wait to see full tutorial
Great tutorial but I'm having an issue now where I import back into UE5 and now it separates the mesh textures from the mesh into 6 texture files
Great tutorial, any Idea on making Hoodies and stuff? Can't parent stuff to the head bones this way
Hey if I wanted to do this same workflow but use the metahuman with a T pose is that easy to accomplish?
完美
What do i need to do if i used a character that isn't Metahuman and doesn't have a body / legs option on the BP? If i add the clothes to Skeletal mesh it gets rid of the characters skin mesh, and looks like a ghost wearing clothes when i press play and run around..
This has got to be the most convoluted process ever. Everything about clothing on characters seems to be over-the-top complicated when it doesn't have to be. I can't wait for Epic to buy out marvelous designer and integrate the cloth sim directly in Unreal. Or for someone to create a cross-platform plug-in that allows us to sidestep all the joining, converting, importing, and exporting bs.
Great tutotial, thank you! I only have 1 problem, my clothes seems fine and fitting perfect in viewport, but ingame the clothes are a little outside from the character, should I edit the animations one by one or what do you think is the problem?
@aritrachoudhury8409

I am facing this same problem. Did you find a fix for this? @mikkelherbst5185
Basically, every single piece of cloth, you still need to use the rig and do the skinning before importing to UE5? Would it not work, if you just import the mesh, and while importing you assign the Metahuman Base Skeleton?
any chance you know how to export the hair and textures of the meta as well?
do you turn off the Level of Detail & Collisions for the body export as well as the face?
Love this!! Only thing im having trouble with, when I get it into UE5 the colors and texts from the shirt are gone. its just white? Any idea what I'm doing wrong?
Another reason you could be having the merge bone problem: Blender renamed your "root" bone. If its not "root" and instead "root.08" or whatever (maybe you made 8 copies of the scene like I did), then unreal will not recognize the metahuman rig when you try to bring it back from Blender into UE. Rename it to just Root.
Thank you so much for this tutorial. Just one question. If I have say 3 or 4 different garments, is it better to repeat the same process for each or combine them and import them as one?

Wondering if you found anything out. I am in the middle of trying it as one FBX right now. I had to do the transfer weight steps in blender separately, doing the shift and click upward to root 3 times from top to bottom. I had two shoes and a core piece of clothing.
@CryptoManSam20
Жыл бұрын
I will be reworking it in the future. As separate fbxs I'd imagine that there will be less clipping between the character and the shoes. Everything tracks decently, but I do get feet clipping through the shoes on occasion.
Hey, so, I used your tutorial but for some reason my skeletal mesh imported without any bones even tho I assigned it the correct skeleton. I tried with the third-person basic mannequin too and that imported with bones but doesn't move even though it has a anim graph assigned to it. I had this down last year but something changed with Blender 3, now my rigs all come in with wrong joint orientations even though I follow the steps, How can I get these rigs not to flip?
@NilsGallist

I don't quite know what you mean by "rigs not to flip". I am using 3.1 as well and it works as expected. Make sure to use the standard export fbx settings and do not change the joint orientation in the settings.
@LeFantasticPlanet
2 жыл бұрын
@@NilsGallist The bones are coming in oriented wrong, so the rig is flipping each bone and the whole mesh goes horizontal, in this case, actually, the head is flipping forward 90 degrees on the X. I set my rig to export exactly as the settings show. The funny thing is this worked before 3, I got clothes on the MH last summer in 2.9. Try try again. I do use Better FBX as an addon Thanks for checking in, let me know if you have any insights
Nice video, but when I add animation to the Metahuman the cloth will be at one place, help solve it
Importing the clothing always brings up the error message "FAILED TO MERGE BONES" and asks to regenerate the skeleton which messes everything up. I have the exact same export settings and I feel like I've tried everything at this point.
@horizon5431

*IF ANYONE ELSE HAS THIS PROBLEM* It is because Unreal thinks that the top node of the skeleton that you imported (which is probably a group with the same name as the skeletal mesh) is a entirely new bone, which messes up the hierarchy. When exporting your clothes from the 3d software, make sure to take everything out of the group first so that you're only exporting the skeleton and clothes.

Hmmm... looking something more dynamic :/ so if I wanted same clothes for different body types, I would need to redo clothing mesh or wait, make base bones adjustable so the clothes also would adjust to it, right? Brain why you can't take things step by step and not go for PRO mode right away... :/

why the clothes disappeared when zooming in?

Heyo, Exporting the materials from Unreal Engine to Blender is not possible without plugins and extensions. These are just 2 completely separate things. Same as doing a paint job on a car. In the end, you just apply a new color to an object, but you cant just use a brush and color from the warehouse and expect the same results as done in a professional workshop. Just two different worlds. To get the materials, you have to export the textures and build your materials in Blender from anew. Content-> Metahumans-> Common-> "Filter Textures" -> Look for the appropriate one and -> right click: Asset Actions: Export

When in blender tithe first thing you have to do after importing the rigged mesh and your new clothing is add the armature to the clothing, then you shift click and drag the clothing onto the body rig root, then delete all lods body rig leaving a single LOD, preferably the original LOD 0, then you control clock the LOD rigged mesh, then control click the clothing, change to weight painting, transfer weights, by name, you cannot skip this part at all, that's where most people f-up. Then you go back to object mode, delete the body mesh so theres only the clothing and rig left, and export the armature and rig
does it move. is the clothes simulation or weight painted to the character's rig?
@NilsGallist

It is weightpainted to the character. This meany, it will take the same animation file as the avatar skeleton.

hello, can we modify the metahuman with zbrush and re import it ?
@NilsGallist

Yeah, as long as you you dont add geometry. Then you have to think about weights again. Typically I´d recomend solving issues with textures first... but I understand that´s not always possible.

I've managed to get this to work, but for the life of me i cannot get it to work consistently. I cannot figure out why but i have to redo the blender weight painting part of the tutorial about 6 times before i can successfully get it into unreal. I'll face the issues of the armature not binding to the clothing and bone heiracrchy changes on the clothing. unreal has no debug info on what the actual fck is causing the fault..
