Crystalis is a fantastic NES Action RPG from SNK, how does Nintendo's port to the Game Boy Color fare?

    I liked how the story was told in the original NES game, it had more of a sense of mystery where you had to go around and find out what's going on for yourself. The GBC story to me had too much of a same old boilerplate "good vs evil" thing. Also, yeeeeesh the field theme on the GBC version sounds like it came from a crappy TV show licensed game or something. Great video as always

    i agree, everything in the GBC is just laid out for you more or less, getting to know the world and game is part of the charm. i seriously considered just not having any GBC music in the video apart from the feature because it's so grating at times, but fairness and all that... thanks man!

    I live in a small town in Venezuela and I do not know how a Crystalis brand-new copy managed to end here... but I purchased it when I was 8 years old. Today, I am 35 and I still own it. In retrospective, I am impressed how good Crystalis is, considering it is previous to A Link to the Past. Definitely, a gaming jewel of all time.

    This was one of the first games I ever owned, my dad bought it for me probably in 2000 or 2001, the GBC version. Luckily I was ignorant of the superior NES version, and I absolutely loved this and played the crap out of it, finally beating it many years later

    What is amazing about SNK is that although they were known for war/fighting games around that time, their best NES games IMO were those outside their regular genre, and Crystalis was one of them. (This, and Baseball Stars 1, were among the BEST EVER games on the NES.) NES Crystalis was as good a game can get on the NES, even with its minor quirks. Great score, graphics, control, gameplay, and perfect difficulty curve. It was very addictive and very fun. I remember when I first got it and couldn't wait to tell all my friends about this fantastic purchase. It was too bad it never made it to the Neo Geo, or that a sequel was scrapped, and that the GBC version was quite inferior. Just too bad. I still have hope for a new better-than-ever Crystalis on a modern system from SNK/Playmore/Leyou, or from whoever owns the rights for it.

  • @christophercobb8008

    @christophercobb8008

    I've found that SNK just doesn't seem to go that deep into its old catalog for reasons I suppose are purely financial. Crystalis might not have been the banger financially they were hoping for and thus it was scrapped. Us fans love it, but they're a business, not a charity. I mean, they've yet to remaster Last Blade or Last Blade 2 and those are huge cult classics in their back catalog. They've only recently made a sequel to Garou Mark of the Wolves (which was in 1999), which probably has a far larger fan base. It's always sad when you look at old games as business ventures and not works of art, because, honestly, at the end of the day, these companies aren't in the business to make art, they're in the business to make money. If an IP doesn't make them money both times out, presumably, then they're not going to bother with a sequel. Now, were I decent enough with something as dinky as RPG Maker in whatever iteration is considered best, I'd make a "spiritual successor," but, it would be a labor of love that just wouldn't sell. Mostly because I'd have to use stock art images and most folk want as much to do with RPG Maker games as folk like generic cereal. It's nice and all, but why not spend a bit more to get the far better experience? Anyways, that's my take on it.

  • @PuzZLeR_00

    @@christophercobb8008 You are right in that Crystalis wasn't as profitable to SNK as it was popular to cultists of it. SNK tried something different on Game Boy, but you can tell they tried to do something else. But, IMO, SNK could've given it more love, and a bit more patience to attract fire, and that they gave up by one NES/SNES/Neo Geo sequel too early for it. The Homebrew Community can indeed respond, whether it's as a "spiritual successor", or even an "official sequel" if they can score the rights. Opportunity maybe? Perhaps some Indie Dev can benefit from SNK's loss, ha ha.

    Back in the day, myself, and my Cousin played Crystalis on the Nes. It was one of our favorite games on the system. When the GBC version came out we were excited to go play it. At the time one of us had one of those devices that allowed a person to play Gameboy Games on the Television. So we got the Game, and booted it up. Looking back at it now both of us had a hilarious simultaneous reaction when we first heard the intro music. Which is both of us let out a short yell with "AH!", and I think both of us said "What's going on?!" For a brief moment we thought it was glitching out, and the game was broken, but then it continued... We realized what was going on, and we both thought it was a horrible Change for the intro. Things got worse from there... Suffice it to say we did not enjoy this version of the Game because of most the changes mentioned in the Video. We were hoping it was going to be a Great "new", and improved version. Improved Original Soundtrack, Sprites/Background, etc... Alas the Cons outweighed all the pros.

    There's a good translation patch, that completely retranslates the original Japanese title to English, that makes the game much more enjoyable. There's also the rebalance patch which gets rid of the forced grinding and makes the game more modern and reduces some of the artificial difficulty. Those are all for the NES and imo is the best way to play the game today. Plus, there's one where they updated the main hero's Sprite and it just cleans it up a little. They're nothing major and don't change the feel of the game, if that's anything one would be concerned about.

    Well its been a few years, my memory is hazy on it, but giving a cursory glance, to some walkthroughs, it matches what I recall about it: That in the NES version, (NOT REALLY SPOILERS....BUT JUST FOR SAFETY'S SAKE: SPOILER)....you fight Draygon, enter the tower, and defeat Dyna. In the GBC version you enter the tower, defeat Dyna, and then Kill Draygon. Also I could swear that in the nintendo version the Crystalis sword has no blasts untill you enter the final boss fight whereas in the GBC the Crystalis sword is able to shoot as soon as you get it. I do remember for sure that the GBC Crystalis sword DOES have shooting power Im relatively positive on these facts, but would love any confirmation you can give. I happen to be doing an NES emulation of it right now.

    I didn't know there was a port to GBC. So I quickly tested out of curiosity. As I'm currently developing a 2D action RPG, one difference jumped out at me. The character's movement speed is doubled in the diagonals on the GBC version. This is because the routine takes into account moving from two directions at the same time, which is not the case on NES, where the motion vector is normalized. I think that's a bad thing, especially given the low resolution on GBC, as hinted at around 5:20.

I 99% agree with you but, as a fanatic of Crystalis (and someone who bought it on NES at launch) I can say that the GBC version barely wins due to the massively improved hit detection and elemental weakness rebalancing...those two core game play elements trump screen size and music, in my opinion

    Game vs Game yea i have never really seen any comparisons between the two either but i had always just assumed they were about equal in power kind of how i always assume the gba and snes are pretty equal. I guess this shows that the NES was pretty powerful for its time.

    it was, the GBC is technically way more powerful than the NES though, at least in terms of processing cababilities. i believe (not double checking, so i could be wrong!) it's processor was something like 8 times faster than the NES, i think had more RAM too. but it's big killer (at least when contending for the title "Portable NES") was the resolution, same with the GBA really.

    Great video! I love this game as well. I actually remember finding out about the GBC version through Nintendo Power back in the day and got it when it was still fairly new. I really liked it back then, but going back to it now kinda sucks. The NES version is a lot more fun to play through. One thing about the story that I like in the NES version better is that the main character and the other character who shows up later (trying not to give away too many spoilers) are actually scientists from the past rather than warriors or magicians. The apocalypse happened due to science and technology rather than magic. I liked that back story and I feel like the change in the GBC version made the whole thing feel a bit more generic.

    "You ever borrow a game from a friend and accidentally delete their save?" - No, but I legit lent my copy of Crystalis to a friend who then lent it to a different friend who then deleted MY save. That being the first line of this video was freaky.

    There was actually supposed to be a remake of Crystalis for the Neo Geo which would have been bloody awesome but was scrapped due to the Neo Geo home system doing VERY poorly but the arcade version system doing very well which prompted SNK to focus only on arcade-style games and it makes you wonder why SNK didn't do a Neo-Geo Pocket color version of Crystalis instead of the lousy GBC version.

    Never played Crystalis. Probably because it's never been released in the UK. Looks like the NES version is a bit pricier here. Looks real good though. May have to keep an eye out for a decent price. Weir dhow it's not had a Virtual Console re-release yet. It seems like the sort of game they would have released on there. Also, nice work getting a second new vid out so quickly man!

    thanks Ant! yeah it's a shame it never made its way to UK shores, i'm sure the VC is a godsend for that sort of thing for you all! maybe i'm overstating it a bit :p trying to stick to a more strict schedule and this was a quick turn around to get on track to keep GvGs coming out on a regular interval. step 1 i guess!

  • @MellowGaming

    @MellowGaming

    There's bee a few decent things randomly appear on the VC that were impossible to get here like Mario RPG and Earthbound. Both Startropics games were released recently too which i don't think had UK releases before. Flipside is that Nintendo keep putting the 50hz PAL versions up and you never know what games are. They even optimised Super Metroid to run at 60hz speeds but used the PAL ROM which has German subtitles switched on all the time. So they actually put work into improving the PAL port rather than just putting the Original version up. Looking forward to the next GvsG. Maybe it's time to tackle every console version of Doom in one video! Actually, probably a terrible idea. Don't do that.

    oh nice, those are good wins for you guys, all of them, Mario RPG and Startropics (the first, hadn't played the 2nd until just a few years ago) were favorites of mine in childhood! Doom... yikes man. someone got Doom running off like a Canon inkjet printer LCD screen... there's so many versions out there, it's like talking Tetris. Though i'm not saying no just yet :)

    Didn't play the GBC version but the music, while different, doesn't sound so bad to me. Quite a different vibe but still ok by itself (considering the GBC sound chip is not his strongest asset, remaking the original tunes could've been much, much worse..). I dont mind more hints during the game, some parts are hardcore to figure out in the original. And the hero being a prophecy figure is already there on NES. The wise men are waiting for his arrival and heavily supporting him in his quest. But the screen size is a deal breaker. I cant even imagine the boss fight against that ninja bouncing everywhere. Also apparently the final boss is different between the two versions? Spoiler: You fight Draygon and then the Tower Core to save the day in the original, but only Draygon in the remake. More climactic this way, but it's still one part of the game "missing".

    I disagree with, but respect your opinion on the GBC version's music. It's not terrible, it just needs to use a different pitch or soundfont, kinda like with MegaMan 2's GB port. (Unpopular opinion, but I rather enjoy the GBC field theme. I'd love to see it reorchestrated at some point, most people call it "cartoony" but it feels more "jaunty" to me. :3) I will not deny the audio superiority of the NES version, however.

    I had the nes game forever love it!! saw the gba version at a game stop i was working at (god , like a decade ago) bought it. it felt off and I hated the music, I could not finish it I felt like they ruined the classic, I might be curious now with the story changes. also the sword stuff is not a big deal they probably should have used L and R to switch between the swords.
