When I was a kid I'd stay with my grand parents on their farm to earn spending money. A kid who lived nearby was a video game wizard and I brought Crystalis over to his house to see if he could beat it. We stayed up all night before we knew it playing and exploring the world in Crystalis. It was the first all-nighter I ever pulled.

Loved the videos. I played through Crystalis back in 1991 or '92. Awesome game! My favorite aspect of the game is how attached you get to the characters. There's a part where something major happens to some of the characters you've spent time building relationships with and it was truly shocking to me when I was a kid. This was the first game I'd ever played that impacted me that way.

I remember getting this game as a kid and liking it. I then played it MANY years later and realized that my younger self was nuts, figuring the game out and grinding like mad without a guide.

Playing these without a guide is what makes them so fun in the first place. If you always know where to go or what to do, you lose every bit of discovery.

I love this game so much, but I only ever played it as a rental. For some reason, I never bought it. I was reminiscing about it a few years ago and my wife bought it for me as a birthday present, so I’m able to play it again. Definitely a hidden gem and good coverage of it!

I first discovered this game at the 1990 World Nintendo Championship event as one of many playable upcoming games (Solstice was another game I first discovered there). I remember I wanted this game after only playing it for a few minutes. Unfortunately, as much as I love this game, it has some somber memories attached to it. Throughout my elementary school years through 7th grade, I lived with my paternal grandparents as my school was closest to them, but I'd visit my maternal grandmother and mom on the weekends. On a Wednesday in early September, my paternal grandmother kept me home from school and took me to buy a new game (which was Crystalis), a red flag that I completely missed - I was only 9 years old - since she was the most strict when it came to my education. When I got home, I had it up and running, but didn't get to go past the title screen. My parents - who had divorced when I was around 3 or 4 - came to see me together (another missed red flag) bearing some news they felt I needed to hear from both of them: my maternal aunt's husband and my maternal grandmother had both passed away (from unrelated problems) the day before. Afterwards, I think I played nothing but Crystalis for several days when I wasn't in school, probably a couple of weeks. I still replay it occasionally via emulation, but I still own that original cartridge and, if the save battery has held out to this day, my original save file is still on it.

I adored the game as a kid and still hold it in high regards. I recently picked it up again in the SNK 40th Anniversary Collection along with a bunch of moderately fun coop games. I like this version because it doesn't subtract anything from the original and it has some neat features like instant saves. I like the community around it because there are still some of the best game guides ever made for this game, because I find it too hard to figure out where to go and what to do without the guides.

Crystalis is one of the best games to play for anyone curious about where current action RPGs draw influence from. It introduced diagonal motion for characters in a time when everything was horizontal and vertical. It introduced a dramatic storyline utilizing elemental weapons to conquer enemies, it told a grand and dramatic story, had the protagonist dress up in disguises to sneak past areas or enter towns, had quick warp, leveling up with purpose, and was just a fantastic game. It’s a must play for any RPG fan

Crystalis was such a brilliant sci-fi/fantasy hybrid. To this day, it's still my favorite game on NES with Faxanadu being a close 2nd.I absolutely loved that strange world they created and will be forever pissed that they cancelled the sequel. Btw, that bugboss and whole area was a Nausicaa reference ;)

Zelda might have been the king of puzzle solving RPGs back in the day but Crystalis had so much greater character building and interaction back then. This was the first Nintendo game that made me feel like these were real characters in a real world. There might have been others, but to me this was the best.

I remember when my Aunt who introduced me to all the best NES games couldn't figure out how to pass from the first town and dungeon to the next scenario. Then the shock and amazement we shared as we broke one of the mysterious Ice walls in the first dungeon near the end of the game. That being said... I don't remember the crystalis sword, so I think it's time to boot up the emulator and finally smash that last boss!!!!

This game is amazing. Unfortunately, I never finished it. I got stuck at a part where you ride the dolphin. Then as I went off to college, my parents gave my NES games to my cousin's boyfriend and Crystalis was gone forever (as well as Metroid, SMB3, and a few others). Just glad its on the Switch so I can get back to playing it.

Crystalis is, to me, hands down, the greatest video game available on the Nintendo Entertainment System. The nostalgia I have for this game is immeasurable. My most cherished memory of the game is the overworld theme which plays in this video at 3:17. I must admit, I cried a little upon hearing it again for the first time in a while. This...was epic NES music. This was the stuff you hummed all day at school before you could come home and actually indulge yourself. Thank you for acknowledging this games existence. You could have made yet ANOTHER video on KZread sucking Miyamoto's diq over the latest Zelda entry or ANY Zelda entry, but instead, you shined a light on a game that was available on the same hardware and did it better despite being criminally ignored.

I really feel like Crystalis was the first of its kind. It was engaging and complex from the beginning to the end, and the story progression was flawless. It created a world that really pushed the NES envelope. Although there are themes from both Zelda and Link's Awakening, Crystalis evolved the concept so radically that it created something entirely its own.

Had this game back in my NES days, and it (along with The Guardian Legend) were the two "hidden gems" I had for that system. And Crystalis is part of the SNK 40th Anniversary Collection (know its on Steam, not sure elsewhere) so been enjoying a replay.

My uncle played this game on NES and I sat there as a 4 year old kid mesmerized by it. He didn’t let me play it because he was afraid I’d save over his file, but it was enjoyable to watch. It’s a better game in my opinion than Zelda.

This game was so amazing! One of my favorites on the NES as a kid. It felt like a huge adventure. I finally beat it on Switch not too long ago, but I was disappointed to learn one of the bosses required you to be above a certain level, which the game never tells you. That explains why I wasn't able to beat it 20 years ago.

Fond memories of playing this game home sick from school. I hated looking at guides so really tried to avoid it, but I broke down and called the Nintendo hint line to figure out why I couldn't harm a boss. Unlike most games, when you're underleveled, you'll still do some damage. But in Crystalis, you will do ZERO damage until you are leveled enough. Then there was a guard you had to paralyze from a distance because if you approached he'd block a door. So I needed help on these two things which soured me a little, but still really loved the game. Soundtrack was super catchy.

One of, if not my favorite nes titles all time. How could you look at the cover art and not buy this game? Riding around on the dolphin was my favorite part of the game, but my fondest memory was finally beating the sword master where you have to just button mash your way to victory( I rewarded myself by buying a turbo controller for later playthroughs). Took me so many tries to finally beat this game. I was so proud of myself never having used a game guide or walk through to beat it. Great review.

Loved this game as a kid. I didn't know what grinding was until I played this gem. I hated the pyramid dungeon towards the end of the game. The whole layout looked the same (i.e. rooms, walkways, etc) and I assumed there wasn't anything important in there. That was unfortunate because you can't beat the second to last boss with out finding a key item in that stupid pyramid!

I think it's a really good Action RPG and in the top ten on the NES without a doubt. But for my money, I'm going with one of the greatest games ever designed. The Legacy of the Wizard. I believe this is an overlooked wonder of a game. The dungeon layout alone is award worthy from a design perspective. But, I love Crystalis and have beaten in many times so this isn't flak towards the game but I do prefer Legacy of the Wizard by a great deal. For that matter I think the best game on the NES is Solstice.
