My Grandparents used to lie awake at night dreaming about having the use of ladders and ropes for their journey to school! Icey long jump/pole vault skills, or you couldn't read.

“If the ladder collapses, what will happen to my family?” He wasn’t concerned about himself at all, he knew what would happen to him. You can tell he thinks about his loved ones often when facing danger.

So if I hypothetically made it this far, this stage is where I would've wasted everyone's time, and basically pissed away $60,000.

The scary part about accidentally falling into a big-ass crevasse like this isn't dying, it's when you somehow managed to survive it. Your crew won't know that you did survive and if they do know, no one knows how to get you. You'll be slowly dying in a cold dark place with your body mangled, alone and hopeless.

@@Matias-qx6so you actually could people have fallen from way higher and survived it just depends on the angle you go in at like is it straight down and if so on to what rocks or a blanket of snow pack that’s fallen down there over time.. and if you some how fall off the side then you might slow you momentum by banging off the side which has its own set of dangers but you could survive just badly injured like the guy said.

Actually that's a mistranslation. What his leader actually said was: First phrase was "Oi *something* sun*, which means "Hey *Sherpa's name* Listen to me" And second phrase was "Himmat tight" which roughly translates to "gather your courage" or "make your courage strong" BBC mistranslated it to hold on tight LOL

I've been watching many Everest/K2 documentaries and the thing that freaks me out the most are these crevasses - they are absolutely terrifying. That people are able to control their fear and stay calm walking across these ladders is beyond my comprehension. I can only dream of having such mental control and power!

Before I saw Everest expeditions as a young boy. You would have never thought that climbing the worlds biggest mountain would require you to first crawl across ladders over crevasses as deep as this. Just boggles the mind. Such bravery. So unbelievably dangerous.

The old school guy is Reinhold Messner, who climbed Everest out of season meaning he was the only person on the entire mountain. He climbed it from the north though, so he didn't go through the icefall.

Not really much else you can do. The Khumbu icefall is 20,000+ ft in elevation, higher than pretty much any other mountain on earth, in a region that's constantly moving with ice and is only climbable during 1 month of the year. It's not like you can drive some fire trucks up there

If you pause the video and look, the area to the right is an overhang on the other side. It's all unsupported, possibly loose snow, not supported by any ice. If they put weight on it, it'd probably collapse down into the crevasse. So they opt for the more stable area with packed down snow and a sturdy wall, even if it's a larger gap. If you look closer, you can see a crack in the snow just to the right of the packed snow the ladder rests on. Definitely unstable.

Seeing things like this, I'll never understand how they get DOWN the mountain in the middle of a snow storm, with 80mph winds, in the DARK, tired and frozen???

I've read about it and honestly I don't know either, the people that do this travel on will alone. Every one of them is in pain also, from various ailments either picked up along the way or current ones made a lot worse with the thin air. It's literally just trying to breathe then take a couple steps and it takes hours to progress. By the time they make it down to the next camp they are completely useless and exhausted. They survive purely on luck. Insane.

What these are also in the way to Basecamp?? Nooo😭🥶. I wanted to go to the Basecamp because I thought those crevasses only are to the way to camp 1 and 2 😮

What brave and hard working people!!! Sherpas have to encounter such hardship due to living in such natural environment. Namaste.

@@csgo8614 Yeah, in this situation no equipment available, like drones and such. The cameraman had to hang the ladder with one hand while filming. Also no ropes for him because all ropes were already in use.

I walked up the side of the mountain to the Hollywood sign and had a panic attack while walking because I thought I'd run out of air (obviously not). How these people can do this is amazing and a mystery to me. And not something I will be trying any time soon. More power to you mountain trekkers.

I had my left knee replaced,, and like to hike,, but even the smallest of slants I do not feel safe with, so I go the long way around. Never get your knee replaced... it makes you like a cripple because it just goes front and back. Keep all your torn ligaments God gave you... the Ortho is only looking for a 60,000 dollars payday.

If this mountain were located in Europe, these sherpas would be hailed as specialists and the world would hear to no end of their heroism. There would be university courses on becoming a sherpa with licencing and certification programmes.

Niksan Stha Two of my friends summited Everest a few weeks ago. Their sherpas were quite friendly they told. One of the two got snow blindness while climbing down(his sunglasses frosted up). So he anchored himself to his sherpa and climbed down just listening to his commands. His eyes are still red and a bit swollen. 🙏🏽

@@mukulingle2690 its sherpa's job to take care of climbers and show them right and easy way as possible. They go with them. Its their job.climbers just climb once. Sherpa does it for living.

H L are you basing that off the two sherpas off this video? Because they are wearing glasses so you can’t really assume that. Majority sherpas are tibeten descent so they look more east-asian

@@sshrrestthhha7266 east Asian are the closest looking people to native Americans. Theres 2 types of native American people some look asian while others look closely to Pacific Islanders. In the north like Canada they look asian in the south like Mexico theres natives who look way different more dark longer noses and different eyes no epicanthal fold. Asians do not have long eagle like noses like natives but yet they say the natives crossed the Bering Strait which is false to me its bs
