    Or you could just to do pull-ups in the correct way and not base an entire seminar on how to do pull-ups incorrectly. Really really bad for the shoulder girdle.

    Dont want pain in your elbow from pull ups, simple, do them with strict form. You may even build some muscle from them.

    Kelly needs to talk a lot slower. And asking the question "Do you understand" isn't a good instructional technique; most people will just nod their heads, even when they really don't understand. Personally, I didn't understand much of anything he said, other than the fact I don't know how to do a pullup correctly.

    A TON of trolling going on! Just because you don't like crossfit, doesn't mean he is not right. I personally do not like kipping, I think it puts too much stress on your rotator cuffs especially if you can't do strict. However, he is right with those neutral positions. They will change the places of stress on one's body. I saw something about people thinking he overcomplicates, but exercise science is complicated because our bodies are complicated. Really though, have you ever heard of any exercise where not being in neutral position is good. I can't think of a single one.

    Kelly Starrett's biggest problem is that he's not in any way a coach. He's a physical therapist. For some reason they're pushing him as an expert on mechanics. He's not. His associates disregard the opinions of well-respected national-level coaches like Bob Takano, and he keeps his hands clean, ironically, by refusing to engage in high-level discussion with anyone. He's usually got good information to share--up to a point. But it's hard to defend the man as a person. If I were Greg Glassman, I'd try to distance myself from him, because the only reason Starrett is well-respected is his association with the CrossFit organization. Other than that, he's no different than any other PhD who writes a book. And if you think that's qualification enough to ignore people who have been in the industry since you were in diapers, then you need to seriously reconsider that position: remember that Dr Phil has a PhD as well.

  • @heidihansen9498

    @heidihansen9498

    Nathan Holden I never said anything about his qualifications, I just said that from my personal experience, and from everything I have learned, outside of a crossfit background, because I actually started out running, then went to bodybuilding, and olympic lifting, and settled on powerlifting, and from my PT cert., I think he is correct about how you need to begin your pull up. The most single important area in your body to strengthen is your core, because that is where all movements originate from. I don't care if you have only a high school diploma, not that I would take coaching advice from someone who doesn't know what they are doing, but if someone is right about something, not having specific qualifications does not make them wrong. My point had nothing to do with him and why he is respected, it was that he was right, regardless of whether or not people like the different variations on pull-ups, and so why you left this comment, I really don't know. I personally like the intensity of crossfit, but would never fully immerse myself into it, mostly because I think doing so many reps of technical exercises is a horrible idea, as one's form starts to break down when they get tired and then that's where injury lies. Or learning the "cheating" movements like kips before learning to do something strict, which places extra stress on the ligaments, and because of the "random" selection of exercises, there is not enough consistency to really get form and strength down. How is someone supposed to get strong and good form on something like the squat if they are taught it only one time and them only randomly work on it and don't even know if they will even do it once every 2 weeks, and often times, that's a generous estimate of how many times it might come up in a WOD. Frankly, I don't really care about Greg Glassman, I like some concepts of crossfit, but it definitely has huge faults. Love metabolic conditioning, but inconsistency is the enemy of strength training.

    ***** I´m a Physical Therapists and what you call jargon is actually him talking very specificly about motor control and movement patterns. If ou want to learn from someone about movement it´s him. I agree that you first have to know what he´s talking about and understand the terms and concepts he mentions, because he is indeed very fast paced. Perhaps his Creative Live workshop would be a good start.

    Jesus man, if you were really a physical therapist you would understand that this stuff is pure bologne, he never ever talks specifically always about this or that in such an ambigous way. Like external rotation torque and stability, he thinks those two terms are the god of the human body, well they're not they're just makey up terms and brings them up constantly to add credibility to this mumbo jumbo. Stability is not simply external rotation and external rotation is not simply stability. These is nowhere in the literature to support any of this bullcrap. Lol. The body stabilises any position no matter what position its put in. But the problem is that sometimes the body will compensate to maintain function and sometimes that compensation is a poor adaption which if done overtime can cause problems but simply referring everything to external rotation is stupid,

    +Philip Mathiasen it is one thing to pull yourself up a few times and another to perform the same movement over and over again, week after week. And if you just pull yourself up without thinking, then you don't understand it well enough to coach someone (who probably doesn't have your physique) to do it.

    Can somebody please explain the true purpose behind kipping? Why not just do a normal pull up? Rather than kipping to knock out more "pull ups" while training, why not just do as many pull up as possible and then instead of kipping to do more, just do the negative portion of the pull up to build the strength to be able to do even more pull ups? I'm not trying to be insulting at all. I respect and like crossfit. That being said, I don't agree with the kipping technique at all. Crossfitters pride themselves on doing insanely hard works outs anyway...Why make it easy when it comes to pull ups? Why not just train to do as many "strict pull ups" as possible?

  • @mtgibbo2792

    @mtgibbo2792

    10 жыл бұрын

    My guess would be because it's about "functional movement", for example if you had to pull yourself up onto a bar in real life (I have no idea why you would) then you want it to be as easy as possible hence the kipping.

  • @chrisrodriguez20

    @chrisrodriguez20

    10 жыл бұрын

    I imagine it's the same reason that some people do strict overhead presses and others do push jerks or split jerks (but really most people do both to be well rounded). A pull up is pure upper body strength. A kipping pull up is a full body movement. Done in high reps, gives the same benefits as doing anything else in high reps, toned muscles, improved conditioning. Is the point to replace upper body strength with a 'swinging' or 'flailing' motion? No. It's all controlled. The upper body strength must still be there to stay tight and controlled, preventing injury. Kip supplements strength, not replaces it, just as with technique in Olympic lifting, as example.

    ***** Efficiency. Like any dynamic based exercise. It is allowing more effective use of kinetic energy. If you want to focus on building more muscle then time under tension is what you need to focus on bin your training.

    There are more reasons to do an exercise than strict time under tension, isolation, and building size, and "getting gainz", like all the meatheads want to say. Kipping pull ups can have many purposes. The dynamic action utilizing power developed from your core and hips is similar to that of olympic lifting, and can give the body results in terms of total body rate of force development, dynamic strength and endurance. A kip has carry over to being able to express full range of motion in the shoulder and thoracic spine. The human body is meant to move in a variety of ways, and swinging and hanging is one of them. It's also a progression into more dynamic hanging and gymnastic like movements. A kip is also more efficient as you guys have said. Yes, in crossfit, specifically the kip may be utilized to do more reps in a shorter amount of time, which will result in the whole body doing more work across a time domain. Competition in crossfit is a reason people do this exercise, but that doesn't mean it's the only reason, or that the movement has no purpose. The goals in crossfit are not just to be good at strict pull ups, and only doing pull ups in a strict variety or any movement solely strict, and straight up down lifting will hinder your goals as an overall athlete. Doing 50 kipping reps or 100 reps for time in a conditioning workout isn't the smartest idea for the average person, but the average good crossfit athlete who has the strength, control, and mobility to pull these off will have no issue. The average person lacks the mobility to even hang from a bar properly, which is where kipping can get a bad rap, because the average human lives in the front of their shoulder and has such poor thoracic and shoulder mobility. Guys like Starrett are helping improve the mobility and movement safety for so many people. Any athlete or person that utilizes dynamic hanging endurance or strength can benefit from knowing to move efficiently and freely while suspended, rock climbers, parkour, acrobats, gymnasts, weekend warrior competitions, can all benefit, plus the action of just kipping itself (without the pull up), can be a good dynamic warm up and range of motion opener.

    BRAVO Aaron! Could not have said it better myself. People that call kipping cheating are just expressing their ignorance. It is an important skill that translates to other movements. There was a video around here of two high level Oly lifters that had never done a single MU in their lives. Because of open wod 15.3 they decided to try and both got it in their first ever attempt. The skill not only transfers, but I also think that more likely, it is an expression of great core strength, control, mobility, and power that is important for all or nearly all movements, Oly lifting, gymnastics, kettlebell swings, burpees, etc. I'm going to steal your explanation to educate other dudebros, if you don't mind!

    Terrible teacher. Way to over-complicate a fairly simple technique. He'd make a helluva golf swing teacher since they're apt to do the same thing. This is the culture of trying to make things more difficult than they really are so that you sound like an expert and therefore can justify the exorbitant training/coaching fees that they charge.

    you can't refute correct bio-mechanics. all he is do is trying to explain this to a group that wants to learn correct technique. if you think a golf swing is so simple then why to so many people pay to learn to improve? supply and demand, that's a simple concept my friend.

    Excuse me, but I was a professional baseball player and I made the analogy to a golf swing because it's very much like a lot of the 'hitting coaches' I had that over complicated a very simple concept. A lot of us used to laugh at hitting instructors that would use jargon and fancy terms to try to communicate their point. They were paid a lot of money as well, but that doesn't necessarily mean they added any value. Just because people pay for something doesn't lend it credence. As P.T. Barnum once said, 'there's a sucker born every minute,' and if you buy into this nonsense then you're exactly the type of man he had in mind.

    Brought to you by the "everyone gets a trophy" generation. In other words, pull ups are too hard so we'll make up something easier so everyone can do a ton of them and feel good about themselves. Same people that think arching your back to the moon and doing two inch bench presses is a good power lift. All these people know it's a joke, but as long as they find others to validate it they can pretend to be legit like emperors with new clothes.

    @@spencergsmith Yeah. Look it up. One dude started flailing like this in a competition and beat all the people who were using strict form. Since it wasn't in the rules that you couldn't do it this way, everybody else adopted the method in order to compete. This is no secret or mysterious origin story. It's like how rules in powerlifting only state that your shoulders and butt have to touch the bench during a bench press then eventually someone realized if you could extremely arch your back, you could adhere to the "rules" but dramatically reduce the range of motion required to touch your chest. Now you see women's bench competitors have to also be contortionists. Sad evolution in both cases.

    @@datmeme8967 the butterfly pull-up WAS developed as a method to perform reps faster and win competitions... but that doesn't mean it's not a valid movement. However, kipping pull-ups have been a staple of CrossFit methodology since the very beginning because they allow for increased work capacity, which is the definition of fitness. There is not only a valid reason to use kipping pull-ups (in training) and even butterfly pull-ups (in competition), but there are also sound and unsound mechanics when performing these movements, so your "pull ups are too hard so we'll make up something easier" criticism is invalid, because that's not at all why we do them nor are they inherently bad. You're welcome to disagree, but you have nothing aside from your personal opinion to support your argument, whereas the formula of force x distance / time demonstrates the benefits of kipping pull-ups precisely BECAUSE you can accomplish more work in less time. Nice try, though

    @@spencergsmith It's only "valid" because people decided to make it about flailing for max reps/time during Crossfit competitions. You can use a trampoline under the bar if you want and all decide amongst yourself that also a "valid" movement - and I'll think that's funny too.

  • @spencergsmith

    @spencergsmith

    @@datmeme8967 intelligent response... no, it's valid because it's supported by the laws of physics. When someone can accomplish more work in less time, they are more functionally capable and therefore more fit. So if someone moves from hanging below a pull-up bar (without a trampoline or anything else under their feet) with arms fully extended to a position with their chin above the bar, it's a pull-up, regardless of how many muscle groups they use to accomplish it. And when you DO use more muscles and are able to improve your work capacity, it's by definition a more powerful movement. Think of an overhead press versus a push press, or even a jerk (if you know what that is). Are push presses and jerks cheating? Do they exist because strict overhead presses "are too hard so we'll make up something easier?" No, they exist because they are powerful functional movements that not only display but also improve functional fitness. The same is true of kipping pull-ups, regardless of your worthless opinion.
